Utah!

Thanks, Lisa and Ace. I looked up ILT and what I found said there are other symptoms that would have cropped up. None of my girls have been sick, so I feel dubious about that one. It's the only disease I've found that would explain blood from the nose, though. I'll be researching heart attacks in chickens now. Lisa, you said a chicken who has had a heart attack will show blood from the nose?

I don't recall hearing of heart attacks having the nose bleed, but it just makes me wonder if that was it, I have read on BYC over the years a few instances where people had chickens that had heart attacks and died rather quickly. I also read somewhere on here that it is more common in chickens with aggressive personalities. I was thinking bloody nose=possible high blood pressure or heart issues Maybe? Just a guess.

That does make logical sense. Thanks for your ideas!

Sorry you lost one, Gus. I have no idea what it could be, but I'm intrigued. DH had some Cornish X's several years ago that had heart attacks while they were pigging out. He says they died with the food still in their mouths. It was probably partly from the growth hormones in the meat bird feed, though.

I had to share:
My broody is hatching out more speckled Sussex today. When I left for work, only one had hatched. When I got home, I checked on them, and mommy had kicked one out and it was cold and dying. So, I held it and breathed on it til it perked up a little bit. Then I sat it in the brooder to keep warming up. Well, about 15 minutes later, it had died.
This whole time I thought the mom was just a bad mommy, when really, she knew the chick wasn't going to make it! Nature is so amazing!!!!

She may have also just had a brain aneurysm. I haven't seen a chicken that has died from one but my dog growing up did and he bled from his nose and a little from his ears as well.

Sambi, that is an interesting thought. Thanks everyone for your ideas. Im ok not knowing, i guess, as long as none of my other hens start dying! All the others look fine and healthy today. Thank heavens!

And then here is another one for you. My hen who brooded for me last year heard my baby chicks and started acting like a crazy person. I let her out and she *ran* to them! I stayed to monitor, to make sure they'd be safe, but she is just in love! She immediately started doing the little mommy clucks/purrs to them, and is letting them climb all over her. They all slept under her last night too. She layed an egg in with them ha ha ha But she just wants those babies. Wish I could post a picture, it is just too cute! My electronics don't post pictures well, sadly. It is an interesting relationship because the babies don't follow her around, I'm assuming because of their age, but she is happy to just sit there and be a warmer for them. So I agree, nature is amazing!
