Hi. i thoughtI would introduce myself. I'm in North Logan and this is our first year with chickens at my 9 y/o daughters request although my wife and I had wanted chickens for years. This is the first time we have lived in a supportive community.

Well, I am getting more and more certain that one of the two chicks I selected to keep for myself is a boy. To date, I *think* he has tried to crow twice now. At 1.5 weeks of age. Oi......this is part of why I didn't sell him to anyone. He sure thinks he's Mr. Macho, too. I think I shall call him Loki.

Red, Loki is a good name for many a cockerel. Ours sure causes mayhem these days. At first he was afraid if the hens, but as he become more selfassured, he just pounces on them now! The older hens run from him, and it looks like a rodeo. Ha ha ha poor girls!

Welcome! We're new to chickens this year, too, and are right on the border of Logan/North Logan. What a great coop! Did you make it?

We are actually in North Logan, nearly to Hyde Park. I planned to build one but ran out of time to draw plans and get it made so I ended up purchasing this one. It was pricey but I am happy with the construction. I bought a dog run and then added 30" mesh buried 12" deep around the base. We added a mesh top and some homemade outdoor waterers and feeders after the picture posted above.

I will be driving Diana down there as well so it will be a very fun day! Can't wait to see what chickenstock is like.

Yippee.... And he is going to see if they have any bantam Brahmas, I want one so bad since I saw them a few weeks ago. OMG they were like mini eye candy. Ekk.... I hope he finds some.

OMG I feel horrible. I took over Iluv 2 Silkies today, well one came back home since she is a Splash, but they had lice. I had no dang idea, and feel so horrible that I took them there with lice, and that my chickens have lice.

Worse chicken momma award goes to me. I had no dang idea. She told me to get Puppy Frontline, and put drops on them in a few spots. So I guess I will be off to the pet store tomorrow morning. I still can't believe my girls have lice.


In other news, I put 5 Serama or Frizzled Serama eggs under the broody, and she is happy as pie. Hopefully a few hatch out for her. Got them from a high school kid down the street that is doing chickens for a school project.

Have you tried DE (diatomaceous earth)? I love it and it kills the lice and mites. I use it on my chickens and rabbits and it's all natural. You just need to keep it from lungs and eyes. When the chickens aren't around I sprinkle it where the chickens take dirt baths. If I think one or more has a problem I will sprinkle it on their back with a salt shaker I purchased for just that reason. It has worked wonders for me.

Birds, have lice. All birds. We just try and keep our girls under control. So they don't have oodles.

Well I went outside yesterday and checked everyone. The only one that I could find any on was the broody momma that is sitting on eggs. I almost wonder if the Silkies just don't dust bath. I never really ever seem them in there, and I put DE in the holes every week. And I get white looking chickens when they all roll in it. So I'm wondering if it is just my Silkies, I sat and looked in the head and butts of all the girls last night for about an hour and couldn't find anything creepy crawly.

So on the Frontline issue. Does anyone on here use it and then eat the eggs. I looked it up and its the best way to treat them, but everyone recommends not eating the eggs, and most people do it with their show or breeding birds and so the egg eating is not a problem. So is my next option the poultry dust at the feed store? And should I do the momma that is sitting on eggs right now or wait till they hatch out in about 18-19 days, maybe earlier since they are Serama's.
