Utah!

I thought it'd be cute to make a little story book about them. Accidentally messed up the black pattern on my duck's face but oh well. I'm hoping most of the story will go "and they sat, and sat, and sat." :pop I figure if I spend all my time at the computer drawing them I won't be spending that time sitting by the nest bothering them.
That would make such a cute story book. I love the artwork.

So... I just barely managed to get on top of the muck/stink in the chicken run.... and one of my children decided to leave the hose running (for no reason at all), near the coop for at least a couple of hours, and it completely sogged it up again

On the upside... the hens weren't as hot today, and the ducks got some nice muddy fun in there ;)

Almost done with my 2nd hatch! 4 hatched, 1 dead and 1 in the process of hatching.

Question, can a really thick egg cause death at hatch? I decided to check this egg since it hadn't pipped, no movement, no noise. The shell seemed abnormally hard and thick. The chick had internally pipped but was dead by the time I checked it. It looked like it had a crossbeak so it's better off but it was such a different colored shell. It was kind of a brownish/purpley color with grey speckles.

Last hatch I had 2 deaths but one was a wax repaired shell that I think I didn't help soon enough. After that hatch I read that high humidity can cause issues with very late deaths. Anyone experienced that? I have the Brinsea Mini Advance so it's tiny and gets wet and fogged up really quickly once eggs pip.

Here's a pic of my fluffiest little cutie that came from a big blue egg today. :)

I still have Shirley but she's in the yard these days and the empty greenhouse at night. No bathtub chickens this year, haha. She's still the best chicken ever.

Hey Joy! You got Shirley? That's two girls that I know of from waaay back when that is still doing well. They are being very well taken care of!

I have a RIR pullet that I am letting go. I have of course, kept too many chickens again. My DH looks out the door the other day and says, you have a lot of red out there don't you? Yep, I love the egg layers, and those sex links and RIR and leghorn's are my favs. for that. I also have girl that came from an egg I got from a friend up the street..she is pretty. Doesn't lay every day, but, I like her. :) Nice dark egg..mom was a Wellie.

Here are photos of this RIR. She should start laying by the end of July or first part of Aug. The leghorn I got the same time as her..laid an egg already! 3 months old!
This girl is going to have the pretty burgundy color. I have her on ksl for 20, only 15 for friends here.

That's her closest to the fence.

I'm not sure about the thick shell, but I would ask in the hatching forum. That would make a great topic. Most folks swear by the brinsea and never have a problem. I don't think the extra humidity at hatch would be an issue for the other chicks after lockdown.

Bummer! What did you do to dry it up last time? Pine shavings?

found a home for my brahma roo. there is a guy with property by utah lake that needs bug eaters and birds to graze. he keeps them safe in coops at night and offers grain to them. good guy. did not meet him in person as i just dropped him off but the guy was very nice on the phone. hard to see him go but having a good home makes it go better :)

With it being fly season, I was wondering what you guys usually do to keep at least some of the flies away. I put some homemade fly traps in, but that is it as of now. Suggestions?
i dont like fly traps like that because it will draw them in from far off so you have a bigger fly problem. i use one of those auto sprayers you get at cal ranch, it sprays a natural fly killer every 15 minutes that is just a plant oil and is safe. it does a good job depending on the wind and each can refill lasts a month so about $10 a month and i know that is a lot but for me its worth it. it also works on mosquitoes that can bother birds. i also use the natural fly spray at lowes for spot spraying that uses the same plant oil. i rarely see flies now :) the neighbors around me see less flies too so they are big fans of what i do lol
