Utah!

I will admit, I don't remember reading where you are from. So, where are you at? How many chickens do you have..and, can you have roosters, or do you have the back yard flock like myself? If you have roosters, you have fertile eggs..and hopefully you live close to me!

I am from Herriman. I have currently 8 chickens (3 hens, 5 14 week olds), and I can't have roosters. I have a backyard flock, they have a coop and we let them out every now and they to free range. We use to always let them free range, but after 3 different tragedies we only let them out supervised. I really want a rooster, so maybe in a few years when I move out of my parents house, and after collage, and after a possible mission, I can move to an area that allows roosters. That is my plan to get to.

I had my leghorn start at 3 and a half months..this month! I was shocked. I'll take em though.

Can you post a picture of how she looks? As mine are about that age I want a comparison

So young lady, young you are..planning of a mission..sort of? That's great. Our son just got back from his mission last Oct. Can't believe he's been home that long..I still can't get enough hugs from him. He is out of the home now, but comes down when he can. He's living in South Jordan area.
I can take a photo of my leghorn, but she has been laying for about three weeks now..and she has changed a lot since then. Most of my leghorns started around 4 months. She didn't lay every day for a while, but is starting to now. :) Will get a photo later. Maybe I can get them both in a photo..I have one that is around 16 months. She lays every day too!

Ok, picture overload. That was fun. Although, my little rooster out there is getting more loud day by day. He's going to have a loud crow! I may need to try that collar soon..haven't put it on him yet.

Here she is alone.

Here is a few bum shots.

Her comb isn't quite as red as the other one's yet. She is the one up closer.

About the same size now for sure.

Here are my eggs for today.. I only have 5 layers. Her white egg is the next to last.
Better than they were..they were torpedo's there for a while! Will see if I can find her first.
I know I took a photo..it's hard to see just how narrow it is in the photo..pretty funny. It
looks like it is getting a better shape now.

You can have a goat, but no rooster? Strange. There are 3 different zones in Herriman. I'm in one of the two that can keep roosters and up to 50 chickens total. Will be interesting if the neighbors start complaining. Capt Knuckles just started crowing a couple weeks ago, but we let the chickens out every day and he does not crow until we do.

What tragedy? I know a few people that keep them in pens, but not locked up at night and they have always been fine. I'm paranoid so I lock them up still.

My RSLs have started laying sporadically but nearly every egg is a small fairy egg. Is this normal at the start? They have oyster shell available all the time.

That hen that looks like yours is a mix. I was soo hoping for an Olive Egg from her..she lays the darkest egg in the photo..she herself came from the prettiest Olive Egg you've ever seen. I'm hoping that this last baby I got from her one and only egg that developed/hatched, will be an OE..she was bred to my EE roo I had for a while.

sidewing, my RSL girl has also started to lay now..same age as this leghorn. Still small also, hers is the last egg shown. The two first eggs of hers were speckled, then she laid a real nice sized one, and now it's back to this size. They will get larger as time goes on. She is laying every day now..in fact all of my hens are pretty much, except for the mixed one that lizard asked about. She lays 4 to 6 a week. She's laying more on the 6 a week right now. :)

Thanks Cynthia. I'm not too worried since they are only 18 weeks old, but I didn't know if a sputtering start was normal. Sounds like it's pretty normal.
