Wow, I haven't been on in a while. Been out of town a lot this summer with all my Girl Scout Camps, and then work related stuff. Its been crazy. But I have 2 Broody Hens, that have been sitting since the middle of June. One I'm not too surprised on, its a Silkie/BRLW mix, and she is starting to get really mean with me taking her off the eggs. She was fine the first few weeks, now she bites me like crazy, so I'm really thinking of getting her some eggs. The other is a OE, and I've noticed she is starting to come out more, so hopefully this is her deciding to quit. But does anyone have any eggs I can throw under the Silkie Mix. She is a big girl, she would be fine with 6 plus probably. I just hate the fact that she is turning mean. She is usually so very sweet, but she got my daughter today pretty bad. So I guess I just need to give her some eggs and let her be.

maybe egg bound  soak her lower body in warn water and put some oil in her vent.  You may also give her some pet tinic or sugar water for strength.  She may also have had an injury  good luck

So check this out. We think a couple of our Cornish X hens have started laying eggs. These aren't from either one of my Wyandottes or my Dominique. Aren't they beautiful?

She is up and walking around today. I'd be willing to bet she is ready to lay her first egg. That would be fantastic.

Have you tried giving her some vitamins in her water? I had a juvenile that had a vitamin deficiency and had trouble standing or walking. I started giving him Sav-a-chick in his water and it cleared right up.

She looks great and still looks like a pullet.

She is a pure bred Little Peddler line Marans though and not a mix. I hope that's a good thing.

Actually, I don't think we are suppose to have goats. But we haven't

But at the same time we are only suppose to have 4 hens. We have had goats for a couple of months and there hasn't been a report yet... What zone are you in?
Just the tragedies as to how we lost 6 chickens, and our 2 roosters. One of the roosters we gave away as we are not suppose to have them. The other got attacked by an unknown predator. 1 hen by the same predator. We think our dog just was trying to play with them the way dogs play together. The only problem to that theory is that the way they were attacked wouldn't have been a way a dog would do it. The 1 other tragedy was our 4 hens got attacked by the neighbors dog.

It looks like they just changed the zoning on June 10th. It looks like there are 5 zones now instead of 3. And they are throwing the "Permitted Uses" wording around. I have to study it to find out more. You can see in crossed out text what it was a few weeks ago. They have now added the phrase "mitigation of noise". I'm sure that means - depending on how many complaints we get from your neighbors and weather you have a lawyer or not.

EDIT: It looks like they are allowing animals based on acre size. Instead of areas where you can or cannot have certain animals. For instance, if you have less than half an acre you can have up to 40 small animals. Small animals are rabbits, chickens, doves, pheasant. No mention of roosters in any of the codes as it reads right now. Except for the term "noise mitigation".

I have one that has tried to stay on the nest. Growling at me in there..and..out in the yard! She raises her cackles and screams at me while I'm walking past her. Scares me sometimes. At first, I thought she was being a stink..then, when I noticed she was staying in the box longer, I thought..oh, that is why I get screamed at. Have to say, this is the first time I've been screamed at out in the yard. lol..
Hope someone hear has some eggs for you. How long has she been broody? You may not want her sitting another three weeks if she's already been there so long. Put her somewhere else..another run?

SideWing, I lost track of their age. All I know is that they're waaay overdue for freezer camp, lol. I'm guessing about four months? Definitely some arthritis problems with them, and one girl has had a fluid problem in her lungs for about a month, now. She's not sick, just too big. These birds are huge! The rooster we have left is literally as big as the turkeys, and the hens aren't much smaller. I need to get a picture. DH and I are trying to make time to get them done, but until then they are getting lots of treats to make life easier for them.

Cynthia, silly, sounds like you two have raptors on your nests.

I actually tried that, but it didn't work. I have the mini coop that has 2 boxes on top and 2 boxes on the bottom. The girls all lay in there. But I actually just locked them out. So the girls were forced to start laying in the main coop in the 3 nest boxes that are in there. But the OE actually went and build a next in the corner of the coop. And I rake it out every day, and she re-builds it. The Silkie just went into a new box and just sat. So even moving them out they just moved. The OE is getting more and more less broody but that Silkie Mix is getting really mean and mad at me. She was fine in the beginning, now she is just a mad hen

Me and two buddies processed 16 of them last week. I need to cook one this week. They said they turned out fantastic.

wow red that is not something you normally see! but i guess not many keep them around for as long as you have lol. very cool tho. and yeah i have heard they get as big as turkeys if you let them. good eating have you thought about red rangers? i guess those can be self sustaining but they take longer to grow and do not have as big as breasts but that can be good too depending on what you are after
