Utah!

I was really disappointed by the participation at the Salt lake County fair.  Its really sad to see the chicken participation waining.  I did really good.  one of my Seramas was best in show the other Serama was reserve champion.  I did a clinic for the 4H kids at the show about showmanship and show prep  They were so grateful and cute.  I really enjoyed them.

I got to go to the fair. I saw them and thought how cute they were. Didn't realize how small serams actually are. Nor did I realize they were yours. Good job. I liked them.

OK last effort before I send the rooster off to be processed. Does anyone ()or does anyone know anyone that may want a Light Brahma rooster? He is 23 weeks, not mean at all with people (scared of everything still) He is not ridiculously loud but is too loud for my conscience with my neighbors. He does crow very early and till about 7:30 in the morning but not for the rest of the day. The reason I am wanting to get rid of him is that he is a bumbling teenager learning to breed and even my year old girls are so inexperienced with having a rooster around that they are having a tough time adjusting and teaching him. He keeps grabbing my favorite hen by the top of the head (this doesn't seem to happen with any other hen) and she has a bruise and no feathers on the top of her head. The girls that are his age are fast enough to get away from him but all the hens live on top of the compost pile to keep away from him. If someone knows anyone with a flock of older girls that can enjoy him and teach him the ropes that would be great. I will post a pic of him later today since I don't have one with his beautiful tail feathers in.

Went to our fair, soooo many bantams. Would love to see some nice different LF for a change. There was a cute EE there. And, have to say, the Langshan looked ..well..huge!

Hello all…

Just checked the past page or two and I do not use additional lighting for my birds in winter. I figure mother nature has it figured by now, and I don't feel I can, nor should try to improve on her work. An extra egg or two… is no big deal in a home production flock. As to adding extra heat to the coop in winter, I do not do that either. I love Banties and would have liked to have seen the ones at the Utah county fair. Not so many up my way. Just a few at the Franklin County, Idaho fair today, not that many at the Cache county fair last weekend. The Box Elder county fair is the best show that I know of in the upper part of the state.

Congratulations to Bitsy on the new little one.

Best to all and your birds,

RJ

HI RJ, I'm glad to read where not everyone here supplements in the winter. I just moved here from Oregon, and I was slightly concerned about the climate change, though my breed is pretty cold hardy. I never supplemented heat or light in winter over there, and really didn't want to open that can of worms now.
Personally, I would rather give my birds a break from laying when their bodies tell them they need it.
Thanks!
Jeanine

there are a few of us who dont believe in supplemental heat :) i am sure you know about having enough ventilation. i am sure your birds will be fine.

Everyones birds and or setups are different… so everyone should feel free to do that which makes the best sense to them. Dry birds in a draft free enclosure can take quite a bit of cold, even in our Cache Valley winters. Additional light in winter is as always owners choice. I just don't need the eggs bad enough to make the girls work overtime for chicken feed.

I am considering doing some fall chicks. I did eight or so late last year. Anyone else doing fall birds? I've a hankering for some more Old English Game Banty's and am considering starting out with forty something straight run and see how my luck is. No need to go to Wendover, Nevada to try ones luck, just order straight run chicks…

Hope everyones birds are working out well, and you were able to make the progress with your flocks that you wanted to do. We had mixed luck, mostly due to rocky raccoon. I underestimated their skill and crafty methods in a group. I have learned to trap with some success, a skill I am not pleased to have acquired.

Back on a happier note, best to all and your birds…

RJ

Edit: Cloverleaf, as far south as you are I don't think you will have any problems doing as you have in the past. AND hello and welcome to your new state thread, I have been MIA for a bit, but towards the slower parts of the year for me, I try to keep a finger in the Utah pie. And a big hello to any new folks and or returning old-timers I've not bumped into yet!

Hi folks!

I made it to the Davis county fair. Not very many large fowl shown. I will try to post what I saw in a bit.

I have a few cockerels free to anyone on this thread. Or anyone you may want to give it to.

Blue Marans rooster from Chicken Ridge Farm in KY. Got him as a chick. I'm not breeding blue and don't plan to.

Black copper rooster from the same Chicken Ridge Farm in KY

Silver Laced Wyandotte - Maybe only good for meat. He has a strait comb instead of a rose comb. I would not and do not recommend using him for a breeder. Might make a pretty flock protector?

Why hello, old friend. In response to your fall hatch question, while watching my flock devour our corn cobs, I decided to do another hatch of seven chicks, hoping to get two or three hens at least. Wens overbid not even a temptation after seeing my luck with Roos.

I will put in a few pure bred speckled Sussex, and barn yard mixed using my speckled Sussex rooster. I am going to retire my blue egg laying hen, and am needing some blue replacements. Does anyone have SBEL or Olive Egger fertile eggs?
