Utah!

I also have a rooster free for the taking. He is the ultimate hybrid model! A little bit of FBCM, Cuckoo Maran, Barred Rock, and Wheaten Ameraucana!

Hello Ace…

Good to see those whom don't mind a fall bird or two… I think that other than December to mid Feb. anytime is the right time for chicks. I've had a couple of banties bright home a following of wee little ones. Young hens raising their chicks among the large fowl and the rest of the Banties is just too cute to mention, well almost. Those chicks that pop up on their moms backs just make me ga-ga or what ever it is that makes one sit down and have their eyes about pop out of the sockets. Love my free range wild-stock, as long as they make it into the coop(s) at night. But hen raised chicks is the best thing I know.

I might have to take hatching lessons from the 'experts' we have here in the Utah thread. I have been fighting it, this urge to hatch for quite sometime now, and I can feel that I am slipping every so slightly in that general direction.

Sidewing,

Was the Davis county fair this week past, or is it this week. I might like to see that one, is it at Farmington, near Lagoon or where is it located? I think the Box Elder fair is next weekend. That one is a good one to see, I have always thought.

Anyway hello to old and new, young and old, chicken lovers all.

RJ

Edit:

Henny Penny with one of her recent chicks ~ Max but I think it a pullet by the feathers.

It was in Farmington, yes. Anyone know how the state fair is for large fowl?

I'm doing a fall hatch with some shipped eggs and some eggs I got from @La Casa de Pollo. They should be silkies, sizzles, and frizzles. I've got a first time broody on eight of the shipped eggs, a dozen from la casa in my new bator, and two left over eggs under my proven broody who finally went broody today.

Of course I'm hoping for awesome hatches, but I'm not quite sure what I'll do with 20 chicks:) My husband said, "does this mean we'll have chickens in the shed again?" Yep, probably, but better than in the bathtub.

Last year at the state fair, it seemed to me there were plenty of large fowl, but I'm not an expert. I was glad I went. I'm probably going again this year to admire the birds.

I stopped in at the Juab county fair this year and was pleasantly surprised by the number of chickens, although most of the breeds were listed as "chicken".

Why hello, old friend. In response to your fall hatch question, while watching my flock devour our corn cobs, I decided to do another hatch of seven chicks, hoping to get two or three hens at least. Wens overbid not even a temptation after seeing my luck with Roos.

I will put in a few pure bred speckled Sussex, and barn yard mixed using my speckled Sussex rooster. I am going to retire my blue egg laying hen, and am needing some blue replacements. Does anyone have SBEL or Olive Egger fertile eggs?

I've got OE. My Wheaten roo isn't quite ready yet to mate for SBEL's, I'm hoping soon. You can have whatever you like! I will have to do 2nd gen SBELS, I have not found any 4-5 month leghorn pullets. But I have 4 SBELS to put with him plus a few wheaten and blue wheaten Am hens.

RJ: If you order birds let us know what hatchery....I would maybe add a few onto your order depending on what they have!

I've been hatching eggs straight through the summer. I keep saying no more and then more end up in the incubator. We have our first batch of our own eggs in the incubator now. My girls just started laying about a month ago I guess and 1 just started 2 days ago. All but the couple my daughter grabbed from cages at the Cache County fair are developing. These chicks will be from our EE rooster and the hens are EEs, BO and BR. Hatching is so addictive!!!

I'm thinking I'd really like to get a trio of some breed and start a project but I don't want to step on any toes, especially those of my fellow Cache Valley dwellers. Any ideas? I do have a beautiful Cream Legbar pullet that was shipped from a very active Cream Legbar Club member in TX. The mom was part of her show team and all of the breeder's chicks come out as very definite boys or girls. No guessing on these. What do you all think? How is the market for CL? Anything else that you wish was easier to get local?

I think CL would be a great idea, the ones around here and ID have been questionable. And no worries if you want to do something people are already working on, it is fun to share bloodlines :D

I've got the Blue Marans/OE's in one pen , the sizzle/shizzle project in two other pens, , and new for this year I have a new pen I am growing out Wheaten Ameraucanas and doing those and SBELS in that pen for spring next year. maybe a fall hatch or two. YAY. I would love to snag a legbar or two for my OE project or for my SBEL project (they would be called Sapphires if the moms were CL)

4am! yikes! I have a handful of roosters but luckily they don't start crowing at all until 6:30. I wonder if yours are getting some sort of light from the neighborhood that is getting them started.

I like to think that some of them are just short a few brain cells. I have one rooster that is a real ding dong. He goes off anywhere from 11 pm to dawn, and he is LOUD. He crows when it's pitch black outside or when we are in the yard with a flashlight. He's going in the soup pot as soon as I don't have a bazillion other things to take care of.
