We had a small dog get in our back yard back in April. A small dog, mind you. It instantly killed 3, and a fourth was severely injured. We kept her in our garage in a little bucket (20-10-4 inches) full of nesting material. It sounds mean, but all she wanted to do was sit there anyway, so we had a small area blocked off for her if she did want to get up for food or water or whatever. I don't know how severe your Jamie's injuries are, or where, but you might want to do something similar. Sadly we ended up losing that hen 2 days later, when the vet was getting ready to put her under surgery. Gave her the gas, turned around to put gloves on, came back, and she had found rest.

Other than a knick on her foot (which didn't bleed more than a single drop) and the puncture below her ear everything checked out. No broken bones, no lacerations, and I'll check for bruising tomorrow. Both eyes are fine and the bleeding stopped after we applied the antibiotic.

I have a dog kennel ready to take her if she's doing poorly tomorrow. She was standing around the entire time and when I opened it up she came trotting out like she owned the place.

I hope so. All the girls were so worried when I brought her in. They would be sad without her (I think). She's one of their top hens, along with Jessie. They're troublemakers so we named them after Team Rocket from Pokémon.

EDIT: Jamie seems to be doing fine this morning. Face isn't swollen at all and she's acting normally. She just has a single little scab on her face, which blends in with her black feathers so she shouldn't be bothered by the other chickens.
Everyone is still a little skittish today though.

I may need a coop-cam. I have my 2 B.O. from last year and my 2 Production Reds from the same year. All of them have been going through various stages of a moult but the BO's are finally all done and feathered out again and the one that was first to start just laid her first egg in months, all perfect and pretty. I have 2 EE's from this year that have been consistantly laying for a couple/few months (and they are really not part of the dilemma because their eggs are easily distinguishable) and I have a Brahma pullet from the same buying batch as the EE's that I THOUGHT was not laying yet. I never see her in the egg box, she has got pretty red faced....but still nowhere near as red as the rest of them. All of a sudden we got a huge brown egg in comparison to the normal eggs (think normal double yolker size) but it was wavy and irregularly colored. There has been quite a few shelless eggs dropped on the poop board (3 or so) and a few that were very thin shelled and so broke in the egg boxes (3-4) over the past 2 weeks. I was chalking all this up to the 4 moulters who have been in and out of the egg boxes. But now in the past week we have got 4 of these incredibly ugly brown eggs, and they are all quite large compared to the Buff and EE eggs. I think maybe the Brahma is finally laying, though I had gathered that the eggs of Brahmas were not particularly large, if these are her first eggs they are HUGE for first eggs. They only show up about every other day though. So either it is her, or it is my big B.O getting back to laying, since she was the 2nd to moult and is done but her eggs were never this big. It is a mystery in the coop.

wounds from dogs like simple puncture wounds can be fairly survivable. at least dogs lack the stuff that cats have in their mouths that kill birds fast. hope your girl gets better

newmarch i bet that egg is from your brahma. the eggs i have got from mine have been a lot bigger than the other girls her age. and mine is super secretive about laying, i mean more than my other girls

Good to know! I was agreeing that it must be hers, the eggs are consistetly bigger than what I thought the rest were laying pre moult.....but I just saw a red lay the egg in question. I am sad because I thought "she is finally getting her lay on....9 mos old" nope .

I have two EEs from the feed store that I purchased in April. Either they are not laying yet or they are laying brown eggs. That's 9 months old!

I'm going to have some Bev Davis cockerels available soon if anyone is interested in dark Marans egg genes for BCM or Oliver Egger projects. I have 8 of them and I'm going to pick 1 or 2 for my breeding projects and sell or eat the rest of them. They are about 3 months old right now. Let me know if you are interested. I will start making some selections when they start crowing. They are not yet.

They were sent as chicks from Julie Ackers in Florida. That is the person Bev Davis sent me to when I approached Bev about her Marans.

The offending birds (Turkeys) reside in Mendon, please come and get them.

All of my fowl are very much enjoying themselves and looking for bits 'o grass to munch on. The Modern Games are seeming to do fine, since the weather turned a tad to the mild side. Winter starts in about two weeks, I wonder how it is the seasons are all a month or so off?

I'm thinking and looking for a spot to hold my breeding birds, so as I can collect the eggs I am after for my new chick program, I wish to implement this coming spring. I hope to get some nicer homegrown Banty Silver Duckwings chicks. I'll have to figure out how to hatch or harness the proverbial power of the banty setters. Either or should be good sport and keep me out of trouble. To hear the DW speak, I apparently DO need something in this regard.

Oh, I've chased some turkeys out that way as well! But the darn things are harder to chase in the spring. The fall hunts are a bit different, since that's when they are all bunched up for the winter.

It seems like there is never enough coop space for all the projects we want to do, right?
