Utah!

Thank you. I may have to try a collar, no one is wanting him. I do! :/ Maybe tomorrow. I just don't like the thought of putting one on him while in the run. They do so much backing up and freaking out at first. Would rather he got used to it while free ranging, but, it snowed here again. Will see what happens tomorrow. I haven't put him on ksl yet..but that usually means..the soup pot.

Cynthia, your boy is just lovely! If I had my Icelandics sold already I would take him in a heartbeat! I'm partial to RIR's. I hope you can find a happy solution with him. I'd hate to see him become dinner, as well :(

Well, my rooster Bubba has found his voice!

I knew he would start crowing like a normal rooster. I need to sell him, only 10 dollars, I don't want him to go to the chicken pot! He is a pure Heritage RIR. He is very gentle with the girls. He is doing his dance for them now to pre warn them..lol..and..he no longer runs off with the treats, he will peck at it and call the girls over. He is such a gentleman. Beautiful boy now, going to get more beautiful! Only coming up on 8 months. He is fertilizing eggs..so glad I have some in the bator from him. This guy needs to make more babies.

He has that dark maroon heritage sheen. And..there is a gal that I know that will be heading to Logan to see Lisa soon, and has offered to take him north for me if there is anyone up that way that wants him.
Beautiful rooster Cynthia! I hope you find a good home for him.

Cynthia, he's a good looking boy. Wish I could have roosters.

I took my sick barred rock to the vet today. I really wanted to know what was wrong with her. Mostly I was worried she had contracted one of the horrible chicken diseases that meant I had to kill all my chickens or have a closed flock. (Yes, I'm prone to the worst case scenario.) Or at least treat the whole flock for something.

On the positive side, she does not appear to have coccidia. Since no one else in my flock is sick, he doesn't think it was one of the horrible chicken diseases either. But the bacteria in the test looked to be pretty normal, so there is no obvious culprit. He prescribed amoxicillin for her since it's cheap and worth a shot. He also said once chickens start getting older issues sometimes present themselves.

I felt so bad for her, she was closing her eyes in the vet's office. At least the amoxicillin is pina colada flavor, so it should taste good for her. I guess I'll know in a few days one way or the other.

got a cream legbar from bitseyhorse today. been wanting one for years lol. so happy. bitseyhorse is a very nice person and it was great to meet her. my barred rock is a bit of a loner so her and the legbar are already friends so that is nice. now you all dont have to hear me talk about wanting a legbar anymore lol

if i were you i would give her some probiotics too as the medicine can be hard on the system and you may end up seeing blood and such in her poop. the regular yoplait yogurt works fine. did you say she is eating medicated feed? i wonder if it was the medicated feed that may of been making her sick? i would stop the medicated feed if i were you.

Yep, yogurt for her. I've stopped the medicated feed too (it was only a small portion of what she'd been eating but better safe than sorry) and mixed up a new batch of mash with only the all flock pellets I've been using. Thanks for warning me about blood in her stool, now I know not to worry too much if I see some. I appreciate how helpful everyone is.

Put the collar on him, he handled it pretty good. Took high steps at first..so funny, like he was trying to .. walk..out of it. Then he did the back up thing for a while, but was doing pretty good later. In fact, saw that big boy breed my poor little silkie! What? He went for her yesterday. I watched close yesterday since I was right there, and he really is gentle..just heavy! He's a big boy. I was thinking he was 8 months. Don't ask my why my brain thought that. He's only 5 and a half months old. Anyway, no more crowing once the collar was on, just breeding. Will see if he goes at it in the morning like he did this morning. If he does, hope this makes the crow waaaay less loud.

Brad! Glad you got your legbar!!

rc, man, I hope this medication works out for her. Good luck, keep a napkin with you while medicating.

also i am not sure its safe or not to eat eggs from hens that have had medicated feed or not or how long it would be unsafe for if its unsafe so that might be something to look into. same goes for this medicine she is on.

cynthia i hope the collar keeps working for your boy. i know how it is when you fall in love with them. btw do you have a barred rock? if so you should hatch some eggs from her if she is laying because then you would get a bsl :) i think that is what you get but maybe its a barred roo over a rir hen? also i think it would be funny to see a silkie rir mix lol

Good point. She's not laying right now because she's molting, so I don't I'll have to worry about it. From what I've read for Amprolium which is in medicated feed, some people don't think it's a problem at all and at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/animaldrugsatfda/details.cfm?dn=013-149 it doesn't have a withdrawal time. Amoxicillin has a withdrawal time of 7 days according to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22054104. So by the time she starts laying again I should be good to go.
