Utah!

Greetings BYC/Utah folks, up north in the ice bound Cache Valley, we are more or less planing on spring coming at some point and have decided to have a party of sorts. On the 30th of April, a Saturday, we are going to have the first ever Cache Valley Chicken Rendezvous. A meet and greet, a trade, swap, buy, sell, instructional things, some interesting vendors and I do not know all what else. It is in a great part the kind folks here, whom are to more or less blame for said event. But I thank all of you. You teach, mentor, share, help, enable and much more. It is in this kindness that, for my part in it all, I am trying to pay it forward. I hope ipick will chime in and share her thoughts as well…

If you would like to make the drive to Logan, please come and join in the fun.

Any lavenders, I havent seen one yet that I didnt like.

Has anybody tried feeding Crows to help with Hawks/predators?  I've seen quite a few in West Jordan but I'm not sure its worth the risks.

When I was in West Valley, there was a family of magpies that nested in our tree. I would let them steal a chicken egg now and then since they kept the hawk away from my girls for the most part, but I don't really know how reliable they are. There were a couple of times I had the resident hawk sitting there eyeballing my flock ad I had to run him off. Plus, corvids can hurt chicks :/ So...... I would proceed with caution. You may just end up encouraging thievery.

On a brighter note: my first batch of chickies are growing like wild fire. they are quite adorable. I have only lost the one chick, all the rest are growing and thriving. they have been outside in the big coop for a week and think its pretty cool. They have a dirt floor with lots of bugs in it but I still dig out some grass sod for them every couple of days so they can play in the grass and pick out the worms. I have the entire flock on fermented feed and al are loving it. I have to admit it is pretty cool watching them grow and trying to figure out if they are boys or girls. watching them chest butt each other then run away. its hilarious. sometimes I sit in the coop and give them meal worms, they crawl up on my legs & lap and sit on my hands. greedy little giirls. We are in for a week of wet and cool temps, i will have to keep an eye on the lil guys. Wishing for a beautiful spring

Hey guys! We are getting our first batch of baby chicks!!! I've been reading up on what we will need and what to do to raise them, but I was curious to get advice from the experts here :) so what are your "must haves", favorites and tips to raising your chicks? We are planning to get 6 chicks, a mix of Americans, golden stars (same as sex links right?) and australorpes. We have 4 little boys so we are hoping the are good egg layers and good with kids :)

Glad you have been able to enjoy your chickies :) I've had mine outside the last couple of days to enjoy the warm sunshine. With this storm rolling in, they will be confined to their pens in the tack shed with the nice warm lights....

Congrats! Just make sure you spend time with the chicks each day and help them to see that you are not there to hurt them. They will get to know you :) And of course, the usual necessities like food, clean water, clean and warm housing, safety from predators.

Morning everyone! Happy spring!

TOday is day 21 for my eggs and I'm on pins and needles. I only have 2 that were developing (out of 7) but I wasn't able to candle before lockdown. They're in a classroom at my kid's school. This morning I didn't see anything significant. No pips or anything. I'm hoping the humidity wasn't too high. I"m using a brinsea mini advanced. I just hope they're late hatchers and something will happen today or tomorrow!

I also picked up two chicks at IFA in Lindon last thursday--A Welsummer and a Maran. The maran is so much smaller than the Welsummer! But my kids love them. And I am picking up two Ameraucana's/ EE/whatever this coming up Thursday. I'll be keeping the Maran and one of the EE to add to my 3, and my brother will be taking the welsummer and other EE to start his flock. If the two eggs in the classroom hatch (

Sorry, chick rant to follow :)

My chicks are driving me nuts.  I had six chicks.  I had moved them out to my grow out coop with their heating pad.  They were doing great.  I opened the door to let them out to the run and they figured out the ramp right away.

Last Tuesday, I got two new chicks (same age as my other ones), a maran and a olive egger.  They've been under a heat lamp.  I put them under the heating pad too.  I locked all the chicks in the coop for two days so the new ones could used to things.  The original ones were going stir crazy, so I opened the door to the run.  I figured the new ones would learn from the older ones.  One of the new chicks figured things out pretty quickly, going up and down as needed.  The other, the maran, goes out, but won't go back in the coop.  And if I open door to the run to move it back to the coop (because it looks cold), all the other chicks come charging out to the run hoping to either a) be let out out into the yard or b) get a treat.  If I stuff the maran in the coop, it immediately comes back out to be with every one else.

Yesterday evening, the maran wasn't looking good, so I started all of them on corid.  The maran was still alive this morning and eating and drinking. I've locked them into the coop where I guess they'll stay for the next few days.

Gah! chicks.

Edited to add: My banties are all laying now though, so that's good. They even layed enough eggs for us to dye for Easter.

Also, here's one of my Easter eggers eggs dyed with a banty egg in the background. It turned out very green. It matches the tongs and the cup. I think someone here (maybe RJ?) posted about it and gave me the idea to try it.

A question for my Utah friends that know much more about local laws than I: there is an AD on KSL for a couple of fighting rooster. Isn't that illegal in Utah? this is a link to the AD:
http://www.ksl.com/?nid=218&ad=38980793&cat=113&lpid=0&search=&ad_cid=1
I want to barf right now. poor beautiful animals made to fight for human "entertainment"
Whats up with this?
I didn't see the ad, but it's probably not illegal to sell the birds, but only to fight them. Why would you want one if your not going to have it fight you ask? I know a guy that had a RIR rooster that would tear into his kids. Someone gave him a game cock to put in there to dominate that RIR knowing the game cock would not bother his kids. He wasn't using it for entertainment he used it for a purpose. Not sure that I agree with it, but that's what he did. It had no metal spurs on.

I'm not sure if it's illegal to fight them without metal spurs or not. I wouldn't do it either way, but I have seen a show in mexico where they let two un-spurred birds go at it for about 8 seconds to demonstrate their cock fighting history.

NOTE: I do not agree with or condone cockfights at all. Terrible terrible thing to do to a beautiful bird.
