Utah!

Hey guys! We are getting our first batch of baby chicks!!! I've been reading up on what we will need and what to do to raise them, but I was curious to get advice from the experts here

so what are your "must haves", favorites and tips to raising your chicks? We are planning to get 6 chicks, a mix of Americans, golden stars (same as sex links right?) and australorpes. We have 4 little boys so we are hoping the are good egg layers and good with kids

Welcome!

Sounds like you have a nice mix of birds. I love the sexlinks for egg laying. And, I love the leghorn. EE's are always fun..pretty blue or green eggs.

Question..are you going to have a lot of birds? 4 roosters to just a few girls..not a good idea. Poor girls, and not sure they will get along as they get older if you have them in a small space. :)

I think she means she has 4 human little boys, not four roosters

At least, that's what I gathered!

Thanks Cynthia! We are planning to get 4-6 chicks(hens, not aloud to keep roosters). What breeds do you think would get along the best out of those 3? And yes... 4 boys/roosters ;) The girls will free range most of the day and then go in the coop at night and sometimes during the day.

So, I see you are a night owl like me!

Like I said, I love the breeds you have now..add a leghorn..it is nice to see a white egg in with the mix. Plus, you know you will get an egg a day.

For something with a pretty lacy look, you might want to get a Wyondotte. Look them up. Silver Laced, and Golden Laced..and...Blue Laced. Very pretty birds. :)
I also like the Favorelles..and Sussex. You may not find these in the stores though.

I have a silver laced wyondotte. She is very pretty. My goal when I started out last year was just to make sure I had different chickens so I could tell them apart, and hopefully be able to tell who was laying when!

We have a black sexlink, a SL wyondotte, and . . . something else, I can't remember right now. She's kind of redish, but not a Rhode Island Red. I've got a maran and a welsummer in a brooder at home, 2 eggs (barnyard mix) that I'm still hopefully will hatch, but it's day 22 and not a single thing is happening, and 2 EE/Amerecuana/Aracauna coming this week. With my 3 laying girls, I get *at least* 1 egg a day, usually 2, on a great day, 3

I think that the more you handle the chicks as you're raising them, the more comfortable they will be. With your boys, I'm sure they'll get much loving and handling.

And we expect pictures when you get your chicks! Cause everyone loves baby chicks

Where are you getting them from?

Have you ever had a Favorelle? Here is my ~ bantam Faverell with chicks from yrs. ago..loved loved this girl. The LF ones are just as pretty.
