I HOPE YOU BOTH GET DEER TOO!!!  It is so nice to have the freezer full ;-)  I do love the time in the mountains too.  We save up two weeks vacation for this. This year some of our (more experienced) friends drew out as well so I'm hoping to enjoy their company and learn from their experience. I'm so excited I've been doing the happy dance for a couple of days. I'm already gathering up the clothes and sundries that we will need for the occasion that aren't normally packed. Where did I put those game bags.....;-)

Thanks! Got the draw notification this evening! Drew my second choice and I'll be using a muzzleloader this fall. Should be fun. What kind of game bags do you use?

whoot whoot! Sweetie wanted to get into muzzleloaders this year, but there are too many other projects to buy/ build new guns & master how to use them proficiently. Our biggest new project was a fishing boat. We bought a fiberglass boat for fishing ***a really good deal*** got it home and found it was rotted out right down to the runners. Not to be out-done, we stripped that 17-foot boat down to the fiberglass & have been re-building it. That is a reallyepic project (I never want to do again ;-) Its just about done. New runners, foam, floor, rails seats, bimini top & such are complete, Engine is running, prop is good, I'm trying to design drivers & passengers seat but all other upholstery is done (15 cushions & rails) If anyone has some boat seats just laying around, looking for pedestal & seats, I would love to take them off your hands ;-) Its an exciting year.

I just ate my first home grown chicken this week. It was really good. It was so huge that it fed 4 adults and one child and we did not cut into the second side of the breast. I really think feeding them fermented feed has made a difference in their health & taste without decreasing their processing weight. He was a cornishX at 11 or 12 weeks. There was none of the unpleasant smell that I remember being associated with processing chickens from my childhood. In fact, their pen does not smell bad of chicken poop. It was a little more hassle than just dumping dry feed in the bowl, but once I got in the swing of things it has been really easy. They eat less, and don't stink (either alive or dead) Does anyone else on here feed their flock fermented feed?

That sounds like an awesome project!

I haven't used fermented feed, but I have debated it. I know it is easy to do, maybe I should try it for a little bit and see how I like it. I'd have to get some different feeders though.

Congrats, yay! I just got the notice that I drew out for archery again (my favorite) I really need to get a straw bale set up to practice on every night. Last year I only practiced up to 40 yds and then got a shot at 54.

Sounds like us. DH got a boat from the pawn shop and we had it out on the lake before we found out about the massive cracks in the front hull.....cracks someone had just painted over. At least they had put a new bilge pump on it, too. Gall!!

And truly, my hat is off to you if you sewed those seat covers. My mom reupholstered my grandpa's boat and it was easily the most difficult task I've ever seen her take on as a seamstress. Those things are not fun to get back on!

I haven't used fermented feed, but I have debated it. I know it is easy to do, maybe I should try it for a little bit and see how I like it. I'd have to get some different feeders though.

I just grabbed some 2x4's screwed them to a flatter piece of wood to stabilize then screwed some plastic containers like you get at the dollar store or in my case came filled with deli roast beef ;-) that hold about 3 or 4 cups each to it, side by side. I made two of them and that was plenty for my small flock of ducks and chickens. I have to replace the plastic cups each summer, but that is better than scrubbing them out anyway. I fill them 2x a day with Fermented feed. The ducks made a mess of things when they were young and wasted a lot of feed in the water. I made a few adjustments. Never feed them in their pen and put their water bucket about 3 feet from the food. they need to have water with their food but making them take that few extra steps helped them swallow some of the feed before washing it down with water resulting in much less food in the bottom of the water bucket. The chickens don't make a mess.

I don't know what kind of game bags I use, I find them, usually off season at places like Smith and Edwards, I pick them up and loose them before the hunt. sometimes they make it to the hunting box in the motor home ;-)

Congrats! I have never hunted archery. I'm not bad with a long bow but hunting bows are quite beyond me. Good luck to you. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE ;-)
OMG cracks in the hull would be a deal breaker. I'm glad it had a new bilge. We make it a habit to have 1) electric bilge and 2) back-up bilge 3) bailing bucket. Why yes, we have sunk a boat before LOL
I did sew all of the covers. it is hard because you only get one shot. I'm a good seamstress because I can pick it out and re-work a thing till it's perfect. With vinyl, you get one shot. If you try more than that, it perforates and the seams fall apart. It did not turn out badly. it looks great from a distance. I didn't have to "get them back in" becauseI was making them from the ground up. I had to cut new wood and in most of them, new foam for the seats. If you are close enough to see all the flaws you better be my friend.

@LadyIsadora Thanks! I projected the egg hatching process on the board, and every time the shell would wiggle a little bit they all started cheering. They loved it! They were assigned to eggs in pairs (they weighed, tracked and candled them) and everyone wants to know if "their" egg hatched. What really got me was that they asked me which chick hatched from which egg! I pointed out that none came with numbers on them. When I left today, 12 out of 17 had hatched.

It was really fun to see the 12 year-olds get so excited over it.

good luck with the boat! we bought one once, ended up getting ripped off. and then when we got in the middle of strawberry the motor went out and we only had a little 30lb thrust trolling motor and of course a storm hit with white caps so here we were in a little aluminum boat. it took 6 hours to get in. we were not sure we would make it.

so those of you that hunt big game what is your favorite round or rounds?

Do you mean caliber or bulletin brand or bullet size?

I'm partial to federal ammunition. I shoot a 308, although I'm debating getting a 270. For elk I like at least 150 grains, normally 180. Deer it's at least 135 grains. I'm kind of nerdy about hunting though.
