Ok,
Here's up with me and my flock, and the main reason I came to read up on messages today.
MY EEers
I bought 4 EE day olds at Easter time this year. They are now 32 weeks old. My wife named them AMy, MARy, CONnie, and OZ. (AM-MAR-a-CON-OZ)
Amy and Oz have been laying nice little greenish blue eggs for about 4 weeks. Mary and Connie are lazy. Its been 32 weeks, and still no eggs from them. I just offered to sell them to a guy at work who lost his whole flock of 20 birds (Layton are) to a raccoon. Should I have waited a little longer? I just hate to see feed to go them when theyre not producing
2nd item. I work in our Stake Presidency, and a week ago, our Stake Clerk said that he woke up early one morning, looked out in his garden, and saw a large (Fat is what he said) Coyote in his back yard. He opened the back door and it climbed over his 6 foot fence. He called animal control who said theyre more common than youd think. Animal control said they feed on small dogs and cats that are out. This guy is about 4 blocks from me, and just west of Highland drive about 8800 South area. So, beware folks!
3rd item. Midnight, our Black Australorp went broody in late September. Though winter was coming, I decided to buy some eggs on
eBay and see what would happen. She was a new mom, and came off the eggs a lot, so I had given up on them. But low and behold we got two chicks out of the deal. Theyre Buff Orpingtons, and are now about 6 weeks old. I refuse to raise chickens in my basement after seeing how dusty they are, so these two have been outside, in the garage since day one. When Midnight gets on her perch, the two little ones hop right up there with her. They have a heat lamp and lots of bedding, so I think theyll be ok. Only problem is, one seems to have grown a waddle and a comb a lot bigger than the other one. People are different. Chickens are different, right? Girls can grow waddles and Combs this early, right? (darn, I didnt think so!)
So, anyone had any experience on how long a Roo takes before it starts to crow? I would like to get these litter mates big enough to defend themselves before I ship Mr. Roo off, and move the baby chick in with the rest of the flock.
Anyone need a Buff Orpington Roo in a month or two?
