Please do post the link if you can find it - I'd love to see that! I can't imagine what Lola will think when I slap a sweater on her, but I'd feel better knowing she wasn't completely nude out there - her skin was so red and raw and cold looking. I'll probably have more than one chicken molting next year, so I'd better get started knitting soon.

I'd make one just so when people ask what I'm knitting (they can never figure it out for themselves), I can tell them "a sweater for my chicken." That'll be priceless.

Thank you for the links!

BTW - I'm imagining the look they will give you is pretty similar to when you tell them you are making chicken diapers.

Thanks for the links! I found the littlehenrescue pattern last night on a google search. We're heading up to my husband's family cabin at Bear Lake, so I've got at least 5 hours in the car this weekend - perfect project! My daughter is learning how to knit, so this would be a good project for her - increases, decreases, etc. I'm off to dig through my yarn stash.

thanks again!

I can't knit for the life of me, been meaning to learn for years. I'll buy one or two off of you though, if you're willing to make a couple of extra.

How hard is it to learn how to knit?

Not too difficult to pick up, imo, if you have decent hand-eye coordination. I learned how to knit when I was about 8 or 9, my daughter is 9 and she's picking it up pretty well. The chicken sweater (vest? it doesn't have sleeves) pattern in the link would be an ideal project for someone who knows the basic knit/purl stitches and wants to learn how to do increases and decreases.

Let me know if you want to talk about knitting! I'd be glad to teach you, if you'd like. If not, I'll make you some sweaters if you buy the yarn -

No experience, but I read so many books and spent WAY too much time on this site before buying my first batch last year that I can at least contribute...

She (assuming here) probably didn't have the correct roosts. I used the long side of a 2x4 and cut 45º angles on the corners so they could get a better grip. That way they can put their whole body on their feet during the cold winters...

She didn't just not have incorrect roosts. She didn't have roosts. They slept on the floor of the small henhouse. We're teaching the one without frostbite how to roost. She's slowing figuring it out. First time she tried to sleep on it sideways.

It's about time!!

Remember those 4 Americana's I told you we got last easter? Yes folks, it's been 40+(!!!) weeks.
2 of the hens have been laying for months, and I've been eyeing the other 2 for the stew pot. (but I guess I have a soft heart....)

Yesterday I got a little blue egg and thought, "hmm...."

Today, I confirmed. I got 3 blue eggs from the Americanas! The 3rd one is finally laying!

Wow. 40 weeks? I could have had my wife grow another baby since then!

=-=-=-

Also, I still have about an 11 week old Buff Orpington Roo (cheep cheep!) that was hatched Oct 15th from eBay eggs on a broody Black Australorp.
Any takers? Hasn't started to crow yet (that I know of...)

=-=-=-

And lastly... I've been getting a lot of chicken mags in the mail. Haven't decided where I'll buy, but in the next serveral weeks I should be getting 25+ Buff Orpington pullets (or 18 BO's and 7+ others mixed in?) from somewhere... I only need to keep the 18 BO's. (only.... am I nuts? That will make 35 for a couple of months. Sheeze... ) Let me know who's interested in splitting an order.

I might take you up on that. I'd really like to learn how. Otherwise, I really appreciate the offer of if I buy the yarn, you'd make them. I work in the ski industry, so things have been a little chaotic lately, once things quiet down I'll get back to you. Thanks!
