Utah!

S'long as I'm here...

I went to the Utah Fancy Poultry meeting up in Davis County on Saturday. Snowy drive!
We got there just after noon, looked at the chickens for a few minutes, then headed for the chow line!
They had a donation box at the start of the line, then food and drinks.
Too bad the donation box was at the start! (Grin)... It was pot luck, but no main course (although some had fried chicken on their plates... maybe they ran out??) Anyway, it was mostly salads, chips, and deserts. But, it was fun.

The auction started at 1pm. We stayed for about 45 minutes of it, then I had some whiney boys who wanted to go home. The auctions was pretty cool. All birds were donated, and the winnings went to the club. (nice idea!) One RIR breeding pair went for $65!

I almost bid on a pair of buckeye hens, then I realized I didn't have a box or a cage to take them home in. They went for $30 - too rich for me...

All in all, it was a good experience. Next year I think I'll take fewer boys, a spouse, and maybe even a box!

=-=-=-

My fuzzy butts are doing great! Good strong healthy stock (like I can tell with just a year of chicken'ing under my belt!). They're active, eating, drinking, and pooping! (always a good sign...)

I sold 31 of the 50, and have 19 left. We delivered to one buyer, and ended up trading (instead of selling) for 7 birds. (I can't figure that one out...) Anyway, we now have 3 baby Golden Comets, 3 RIRs, and one Silver Laced Wynadotte. (I've been corrected on the pronunciation; It's Y-N-Dots [not dote]).

So, now I'm thinking since I had quite the demand for Delaware chicks, I may pick up a few more at IFA tomorrow, and sell them as hand raised, started pullets at 18 weeks. I'm still trying to figure feed cost, but I think I can make a few dollars on each one if I sell them at $15. Anyone had any experience doing that? Anyone interested in started pullets mid-July? Does anyone know where that feed/per bird/per age, chart is I saw once…. I knew I should have kept it!

Anyway, it was a good weekend!

I absolutely love Mountain America Credit Union. I've used several branches and have always been treated well. They've financed one car and two houses for me over the years and I've been nothing but incredibly pleased.

Question not related to chickens at all: Salt Lake City peoples! I ask for assistance. With... banking!

Because, quite honestly, I have no idea which bank/credit union is good! And not finding much help with Google or boyfriend & family. And when I was visiting, I swear there was a credit union on every corner!

Any suggestions for which one(s)?

I've been with a tiny little outfit called Healthcare Credit Union for the past 12 years that I absolutely love. The downside is a lack of many branches, and the fact that you have to know which tiny little other credit unions are part of the co-op of no-fee ATM's to avoid fees. But the people who work there have been there forever, and know you by name when you walk in. The catch is that you have to work for IHC.

When I was with my husband, we had an account at America First Credit Union. No fees, and a really phenomenal website where you can print off pdf copies of all your checks. However, I have been separated since June 2008, and was released from the account at that time. However, recently I had to order up copies of statements of the joint account for the discovery in my divorce case and they were extremely helpful, didn't charge me (for 5+ years of statements), called me up at work when they had it for me to pick up, and were just generally great to deal with as compared to all but the other financial companies I am dealing with. My friend, who got separated right around the same time, opened up an account there as well because she could not do my #1 fav (Health Care) and she has had very positive experiences as well.

I'll do my plug now AGAINST ever having a Capital One credit card. They claimed that I could not get more than 6 months of statements. Long story short, several phone calls and a panic call to my attorney later, I ended up calling their corporate public relations officer (lawyer's advice) threatening to go on Get Gephardt if they didn't make with statements. I finally got them today

I saw some at the IFA on 2100 South

I'd call first. They had "chick days" this weekend, so they might have blown through their chick inventory. They had a great variety of chicks there early Saturday morning. They also had a turkey, some geese, some ducks, and some bunnies. Easter must be comin'.

Missed it, and I'm sort of bummed. But I had to emergency babysit for most of the weekend. I left Primary after about 5 minutes (and I had prepared a really great lesson, too!) due to emergency babysitting. Long story. But I'm going night night now. First time since Thursday....

I just cancelled my Capital One credit card last week for my own personal reasons. They are not a good company.

We also went to the UFPA show on Saturday. There were some cool birds there. I fell in love with an ameracuana roo, but he was only for sale in a set of three.... for $120. That's a bit steep for us. No dominiques there, which bummed us out. We really love that breed. If anybody happens to see a dominique rooster listed anywhere, please let us know!

I wish we could have roosters in my neighborhood. I suppose I could ask the neighbors, but not sure how that would go.

I had my eye on a Barred Plymouth Rock breeding trio. I could NOT believe how huge those roosters get! Guess we're just used to hens and baby chicks!

Thank you for the banking help!

I'll have to look into 3 shown, and I guess avoid Capitol One at all costs!

The Fancy Poultry Meet sounds like a fun thing to go to.

Though, also sounds like a member's only thing. Only cause of the word fancy.

I missed the UFPA show (rats!). It was snowing horizontally down here - not weather to go out in. So we stayed home and got a lot of tile down, and then had to stop at 4:00 and go clean the church. UFPA has a show in the fall, dont they?

Marty, I would very much want two Delawares from you! Maybe three. But DEFINITELY two. That'd be fabulous.

Please let me know if you decide to do it - I'll even bring you a down payment!
