Marty, I know that people sell eggs for $2-3 on KSL classifieds. I usually give my extras away. I have parents and friends who always will take some off my hands. My divorce lawyer will only eat eggs if they come from happy and healthy hens so she always welcomes extras.

It might be easier to get a few regular customers though KSL.com. The sellers around here don't even deliver - you have to go to them. But, I wonder if you could charge more at a farmers market...

No food handler’s permit required (at least for the Sandy Farmers market).
You do have to be a member of the Farm Bureau ($65/year) and the cost (in 2008) was $110 for a spot.
But, I've heard stories that folks that charge $5/dozen for farm fresh organic eggs at the Farmers market.

As for how many dozen we'd need? I dunno....
After all of my hens start laying, in August, I could probably come up with an extra 5-7 dozen a week.
That's not going to last too long at a farmers market.

But, if we had several people join together, we could probably sell everything.
Would be good advertisement for extras after the market closes too...

I might be game for joining in an egg co-op. I say might because we are new to this whole thing and I have no idea how many eggs we will have, and need for our own use. We have 8 chickens who may not even be laying this summer? They are only about 8 weeks old so that probably excludes us for the farmers market season.

If anyone does get something going I would love to know because as of right now I think we will have way more eggs than we need.

Marty, I don't know that I will have extra eggs, but I make excellent jams and do occasionally sell some. My problem is that I can't man a farmer's market booth due to lessons on Saturday morning (that is a year-round versus seasonal job for me). If you could find out what, if any, requirements Sandy has for selling jam I could provide some more stock for your stand and split the profit.

Interesting idea Marty!

I have some people who buy eggs from us because they are $4 to $5 at the Farmer's Market. Unfortunately, I've got more customers than eggs. If things happen to change, I'd love to chip it. By no means does it offset the cost of having chickens, but it's nice knowing that they can at least buy their own feed.
