Does anyone hv a RIR that lays two eggs/day consistently? Our Rosie is laying a Jumbo and Large egg a day, both in the am!

I picked my little flock by egg color and the only other brown layers were a buff std cochin (who's turned into a gigantic rooster and definately a roo), and a patridge cochin. We thought it might be the cochin laying a large egg but we'll get her cute little lighter colored banty egg and Rosie's two.

I've had RIR's b4 and never had such a huge egg fm them, it's always been a EE'rs that produce shocking results.

I'm delighted as I was disappointed to think I only had one layer of a typical brown egg --- just a little concerned about her! Should I be?

Unless I have an EE'r that is somehow laying a brown egg?? I have 4 EE's and hv started getting two green eggs a day so they are alternating since they are new or two might not be laying yet. :ray pray, I'm really hoping for at least one blue layer::

Oh, I also have a welsummer and cuckoo maran but I'm getting their eggs on the same day as the two lighter brown ones so it can't be them. They have also been very consistent in the size of their egg.

Hope this made sense, not a lot of sleep last night - coyotes were out and our dogs were sounding the alarms.

Congrats to all the new egg laying "mama's" out there! I too blow out a first or unusal egg. Oh... on a side note, my husband took some to coworkers. Neither expected colored eggs, guess they had been expecting tyical all white eggs. Anyway, the wives said they were too pretty to eat and one little boy wanted to keep our tiny game hen's eggs to hatch so he could hv a tiny chick!

Apparently not all EE's lay blue/green eggs and there was one post where they claimed their EE's egg color CHANGED from blue to brown over time. The consensus of the replies was that's not possible but the poster said it was true.

You do know how to tell who's laying which eggs, right? Q-tip, food coloring, and vents... haven't been that interested in who my eggs come from to find out that way...

Great info on checking who lays - thank you!! We'll do it and keep you posted, probably starting tomorrow. I'm real curious if it's really Rosie or if it's possible an EE lays brown...we do have one EE'r that doesn't have as much cheek fuzz/beard (and one that is the other extreme!).

and sorry! didn't mean to exclude daddys!

I'm betting it's the one of the EEs that's laying one of those eggs. My sister's EE laid only huge brown eggs. She had one EE that laid a sort of muddy greenish olive color, but the other hen laid brown - a bummer for her, considering how much she'd paid in the hopes of getting blue eggs.

When my RIRs started laying, they'd lay one enormous double yolk egg, then one regular sized egg the next day, alternating days. Now that our RIRs are a little older, their eggs are the same size every day. No more double yolks for us, much to my kids' dismay. We never got two eggs in one day from any of them. You might get two eggs in a day from a chicken (if she laid one the night before and you didn't find it), but I'm pretty sure it's not physically possible for them to lay two fully formed eggs every day within a few hours of each other, day after day after day.

I'd be interested to see who is laying what - please do let us know if you figure it out!

I have 8 laying EE's and I can tell who laid each egg, the color and size varies that much. I have one blue egg layer, 4 green layers (with differing size, shape and hue), and 3 'brown' layers. Of the latter, one lays a cream colored egg, one a light brown, and one a pinkish/rose-colored brown. I love them all because I prize the variety and love the size and regularity of the eggs. They are all great layers. I should get a pic of them all and post it. Maybe I will. Good luck with the Q-tips & dye!

Now I thought that chickens lay the same shape and color egg at least for the first year but my first two eggs looked different and I can tell now I only have one layer... Is that normal?

The one on the right was the first one I found and the one on the left is the second. I have found two more eggs like the first since and I know they are from my black stars because I heard her lay it and took it from under her.

Also I know my eggs are fertile but they would be black stars crossed with EE or RR (Two roosters). How long can the eggs stay viable without being warm (if the hen leaves the nest for the day is it over)? And I assume once they are chilled from the fridge they are no longer viable.
