Anybody in the Utah County area raising meat birds?
Our city (Orem) is only zoned for laying hens, but I'm still really interested in raising my own meat. I'm having a harder and harder time purchasing mass produced meat, now that I'm aware of the conditions the animals (and humans involved in the slaughtering, etc) are subjected to.
I'm looking for someone who is really comfortable with butchering chickens in a humane way, is comfortable with teaching someone who really wants to learn but is also very anxious about the whole killing thing (I'm a softie trying to rehab myself into a responsible meat eater), and would be willing to let me apprentice under them and maybe sell me a few of the chickens I help to slaughter at a reduced price. I'm asking for a lot, I know...anybody up for it?

Here's the scoop on true Ameraucanas in Utah from my experience:
The largest breeder of true large Ameraucanas is in Midvale. If you email me, I can give you his contact info.
Sunnybrooke Farms sells almost all Easter Eggers, and an occasional Standard-bred Ameraucana.
I am hoping to hatch a few eggs soon of true Ameraucanas and could maybe sell 2-4.

When you buy a colored-egg layer, you can try to find out what color egg they hatched from. The mother's egg-laying will be partly indicative of what color eggs her daughters will lay. However, the father's genetics will also play into the equation.

Breeders have the ideal set for Standard-bred ("true") Ameraucanas to lay blue eggs, but some Ameraucanas lay olive or turquoise.
A large number of EE's lay nice blue eggs, also.
There is some info on EE's vs. Ameraucanas at http://ameraucana.org/faq.html and I hope to put some on my PoultryPedia.com website one of these days...

I have 5 EEs. I thought if I could find an Ameraucana Roo and hatched some chicks, then they would have the blue gene, might get blue rather than green eggs. The EEs I have are very friendly and social, my favorite of the bunch. I have a couple fiesty roos that I wasn't expecting of the other breeds, so I'll have room for a few more, thought Amers would do nicely. (Only 6 weeks old and they are fighting with everything all the time.)

I was expressing the same concern to my 80 yr old neighbor today. She said, "Just let me know when. I'll show you how. We used to do it all the time." I don't know how humane the actual kill part would be - she said she never could (do it the traditional way) but she got the job done. I was hoping to find a processor that would take poultry. Someone told me there was one in Eagle Mtn, but didn't know the name, and I haven't found it yet. I'll keep asking around. If you find someone I'd like to see it done, to evaluate if I could do it.

anyone have some chicks around the 4wk old range that they'd be willing to sell?
