I really do think IFA is just trying to sell their chicks off b/c neither the Riverton nor the Draper store made me buy more than what I wanted. The current law on the WJC website is 5 chickens and 5 chicks - not sure where the 6/6 comes in - I wouldn't stress over it too much things will work out.

Hey girl, I didn't realize BYC was a forum. I thought it was just a website. Okay so tell me can a buff Orpinton be a bantan and can an Americana be a bantan? We have 1 of each of those that just look really itty bitty. We thought they were younger but they are getting their wing feathers and after 24hrs the other ones are looking bigger and these 2 don't look like they are growing as fast. They are holding their own though. All 3 breeds are getting along beautifully and no picking on each other. In fact I have a feeling these 2 little bitty ones are going to rule the nest

they are so dang cute and fun to watch. Still trying to pick out a name for the itty bitty buff orpington.

I am tempted to call the Draper IFA and ask them why the are mandating we buy 6 if it's over the permit/ordinance limit just because I'm irritated with them.

I talked to my friend who's husband is a WJ Police officer and she said that she didn't think having one over was an issue. Especially if your neighbors are okay with having chickens.

Thanks for having us come see your chicks. My kids are really loving them.

I agree with your friend & the pp - having 1 over is probably not a big deal. Having stinky, uncared for birds is a bigger deal.

in my opinion i dont think it matters if you have a few over, what matters most is if the smell is kept down and they do not become a nuisance. i am not saying to break the law but i know it happens a lot. do what you feel is best. as for ifa and there chicks, if i have a question i will only ask 2 people at the riverton store because they know their stuff and we are honest with each other and they don't try to feed me bs. i don't know their names but i know who they are in the store. i like ifa but i shop a lot at cal-ranch too

I only wanted standard chickens. They had several breeds in together. I'm hoping she's just a younger one and will be as big as the others. When do they start getting their wing feathers in? She is already getting them. The others have more though.

I don't think we will go to the Draper one again. The Riverside or is it Riverton? is much better. I really like Cal ranch though.

Herbmom--If it's a reassurance, it's rare to be able to get Ameraucanas or Orpingtons in bantam size through a retail store that orders through a commercial hatchery.
Also, if the chicks were sold to you as females, it's almost certain they were Standard size. Bantams are almost impossible to sex as chicks so are almost always sold "straight-run."

Thank you for that reassurance. This is our first experience. Maybe she's just a runt. She can hold her own though and is usually the one doing the stepping on. She was practically sitting on the bigger one earlier for a nap

I need to find pictures of the chicks in there stages from just hatched to a few weeks old.

I think the chicken love is on the spread in the SLC valley - I am running into sooo many people who have chickens, new owners & old. It is a lot of fun. And I have to say - since I'm speaking about a broad enough area - many have more than the alotted but all take such good care of their birds! I personally think the limit should be bigger, hopefully one day! West Jordan just got their 'rights' 2 years ago, so it's still new in that area.

I agree bird man - it's wonderful to see lots of chicken peeps around. My experience with IFA & buying chicks was frustrating, I thought Cal Ranch was a lot friendlier & their chicks were healthier. At least this year. I buy a lot of stuff from IFA though - just didn't find the whole chick buying experience good with them.

@Herbmom - Didn't you say their age ranges were 3 to 5 weeks? If so then 5 weekers will be quite a big bigger than the 3 weekers. I'd love to see pictures! It would be easier to tell their ages that way.

@speckledhills - I think a bantam orp would be soo fun! Esp. if they are as sweet as my standard oprs. Do you have any bantams? Only 1 of mine survived, we had 4 :-( She is a little mottled cochin & soo cute.

I don't know how to post pictures on here but when I get them up to my other account I'll send you a message. It was the Road Island red that is smaller not the Orpington. I got mixed up. All the chicks are pretty good except one Orpington. She squawks and gets so upset when you pick her up. We keep talking to her and I hope she outgrows it. My almost 4yr old is being really good with his. I gave him a Road Island red the bigger one (felt it would survive longer than the itty bitty one with him) He sits on the couch with a towel on his lap and his chick on it. Sometimes she crawls up his neck.

I'm not sure how old they are I thought a few days up to a week or so but we were just assumming.
