Does anyone have fertile eggs locally? It looks like I may have a broody... back in Vermont there were some local farms that would sell fertile eggs (for eating) that I'm pretty sure were fresh enough that I would have tried hatching them.

Ideas?

Cheap nest box material in PC area!

I hit Park City's recycling center yesterday to drop off recycle stuff and they have some white laminate shelf sections (with dividers) that were used for ski boots, I paid $1 for 2. I got 6 total and there are still about 6 left. You can also pick up some white painted 1x4x10 to use for fronts ($1/board). They also had some long round white wood closet rod. Total cost $8!!

If you want them you could always call and see if they're still there, 435-649-0708. They are open Sundays but not always in the office to answer the phone so keep trying.

Husbands working them up now and I'll get pics and post.

Oh, and I found a free kids sandbox on Craigs List w/one bag of sand included. Sand's still wet but it had two bonus worms in the box.

I took the top sections off (they were cracked) and it left two holes on each side that I was worried a hen could get their head caught in, so put in some wood and they have little roosts on the side now.

K, here's our $8 nesting boxes, plus a few other pics of the coop. The L-shaped board is to help gain a little more square footage and places for them to hang out to prevent boredom. The coop is 12x20 but come winter they probably won't have much outdoor run. The very low roost in the corner under it is for the silkies, hoping they'll use it.

Almost all is recycled so more practical than "pretty"....but free is pretty imo!

Need ID help now, please? I know there is a main topic for this but I've never had any luck when posting to other topics.

First is a what we thought was one of our blue andulsians but she is smaller, has tufted cheeks and green legs. Possibly Americana but blue?

Second is a buff that has us completely baffled...

Hey everyone out there in Utah. I'm in Orem...Anyone near me have any Bantam hens they want to get rid of? I have one little pair of Japanese Bantams and would love for my rooster to have more hens. He's had many beautiful chicks and I want to try breeding him to some new hens. My Jap hen seems to have stopped laying. I'll take any of your old Bantam hens or Broody hens. Thanks! I personally don't have any fertile eggs but I know a super nice lady in Pleasant Grove that has many chickens and many fertile eggs she's on here but hardly ever gets on to talk. If you want to look her up on here her username is "muffinmom" or you could email her which works best. Her email adress is [email protected]


She has many many differnent breeds and can give you many beautiful chicks. I got a few from her that were Nankins. They are on the endangered list. If you want to ask her for a few of those or some of the other ones she has. TAlk to her she's super nice!

Also I have one that is smaller than the rest. She is suppose to be a Road Island red. The other RI red is bigger. I have 2 buff orpingtons and 2 EE's

We've had them for a week. Their heat lamp has been at 80's all last week. This week I was trying to lower it by 5 degrees. Also they have been very comfortable at 80. Not huddling until nap time they lay together but not all squished up like at the stores. Last night it was 77 in our home so I turned off their heat lamp. First time without light. They totally went silent and slept through the night.

Today I've turned the lamp on and off due to cooler weather. This evening they were so noisy. I tried turning off lights and they still wouldn't be quiet. I found the little one under the perch. I think they thought she was stuck. She was fine and not making a noise but the other 5 would not be quiet. I scooted her out from that little corner and after a bit they have all calmed down and gone to sleep.

Do they look after each other and get upset if they think one is in danger? It was the silliest thing. They have never been that noisy the whole time I've had them.

We've started taking them outside twice now during good weather and let them play in the garden bed that is getting ready for planting. We've turned the dirt and watch them go for worms. They are so funny.

So what are the chances of getting a Road Island red bantan from a group of chicks? We got them from the Draper IFA.

The other 5 and growing pretty good but this one seems to being growing at a 3rd the rate.

At Herbmom: I've had chicks get real noisy w/no reason. As long as they are eating, drinking, no pasty butts, and are at the right temp then they're probably just playing.

I have had ones that have been small and I would keep a close eye on her. Some are just smaller but so have had a fail-to-thrive thing going on. If you need any chick electrolytes I'd be happy to give you some. I bump the amt up a tad when I've had a slow grower or anyone that doesn't seem quite up to perky.

Also, since they are getting goodies in the yard (and house?) I'd make sure they have some chick grit. If they are bitty I use parakeet grit but bigger ones can't use the normal grit (but I admit I dig through and pick out small pieces when they're really little). They are not supposed to need any grit if on chick starter but if they have anything else in their diet they should have it. You could try a little scrabbled eggs for her and anything else high in protein to try to kick start her growth.

BUT it is totally possibly to get a banty or even a little game hen in your batch. We got Izzy that way, she's a Red Pyle OEB and just the cutest tiny thing, so friendly and makes little cooing noises. There's a husband for her on KSL but he's clear in Roy or I'd probably consider getting him.
