Need Silkie help please????

Betsy has had an eye infection on and off, I understand this is a common silkie problem. I treat w/antibotics in her water and that usually clears it up. However this time after going off the antibotics it has come back worse to the point she wiped 'snotty stuff" all over her back. So yesterday she got a gentle bath to remove all infection and back on antibotics. Last night she was all fluffy and happy.

This morning her eye is is completely shut and not stuck shut w/any discharge but apparently was "goopy" because her back is icky again.

Besides antibotics and electroyltes -- what do I do for that eye? Right now nothing to wipe off and I'm not sure a warm compress would be good or bad?? Oh -- any irritating hair/feathers are kept trimmed.

Update: Kept searching the boards and hv tried some things.... I did find yellow stuff way deep inside the corner of her eye. Was able to wash (w/saline solution) most of it. Not sure it's supposed to be there and there is a tiny piece left that wouldn't remove without really hurting her. It was soft, not object like. She opened her eye immediately after that tho. I washed several times with saline and then a liittle neosporin over the general area (eye shut of course).

She's eating and walking around a little. Not her typically self but better and her eye is open for now.

I don't like the idea of always keeping her on antibotic water but it seems we hv the problem when I take her off. Any other silkie moms out there with ideas?

At Herbmom: I've had chicks get real noisy w/no reason. As long as they are eating, drinking, no pasty butts, and are at the right temp then they're probably just playing.

I have had ones that have been small and I would keep a close eye on her. Some are just smaller but so have had a fail-to-thrive thing going on. If you need any chick electrolytes I'd be happy to give you some. I bump the amt up a tad when I've had a slow grower or anyone that doesn't seem quite up to perky.

Also, since they are getting goodies in the yard (and house?) I'd make sure they have some chick grit. If they are bitty I use parakeet grit but bigger ones can't use the normal grit (but I admit I dig through and pick out small pieces when they're really little). They are not supposed to need any grit if on chick starter but if they have anything else in their diet they should have it. You could try a little scrabbled eggs for her and anything else high in protein to try to kick start her growth.

BUT it is totally possibly to get a banty or even a little game hen in your batch. We got Izzy that way, she's a Red Pyle OEB and just the cutest tiny thing, so friendly and makes little cooing noises. There's a husband for her on KSL but he's clear in Roy or I'd probably consider getting him.

what was interesting about the chicks being so noisy last night is that they have never been that noisy. It was like they were trying to get some attention ASAP. When I checked, the little one looked stuck under the perch but she wasn't peeping and seemed content. I finally made her move out from under the perch and than the chicks all settled down. They like to sleep together and I guess they wanted her to be part of it.

How can you tell how old they are? Some of them have all their wing feathers. I'll have to see about giving them scrambled eggs for the little ones. My kids don't like the idea of feeding chicks scrambled or hard boiled eggs

They have now had 2 nights with no heat lamp and so far today I haven't turned it on and they are fine. It says it's 70 in their bin.

I need to pick up some grit for them.

It took me a month and a half between rain storms to build it. My son is working on plans and a tutorial, but was grounded for teh summer from the computer so it will be a couple of months.

I forgot to add that it is insulated, has a laminate floor and I spent nearly $900 on it. I originally thought i could built it for about $400 because I built my Pigeon lofts for about $350 a piece and they are larger.

I did a vinyl floor in mine as well, you'll be happy you did. Very easy to keep clean.
