Utah!

I think you should name your new chicks Thelma and Louise!!

Bird Man, awesome! I'm sure they'll get big soon. I really love the EE eggs.

My great chicken tragedy. Prior to this summer, our run was completely enclosed on all sides. However, I wanted to make it bigger to give them more space to run around. So, we expanded it quite a bit, and put fencing over the top. But, it was getting dark, and we had about 18" of top space that we hadn't enclosed. We put a board on top of the gap, and figured we'd finish the next day. I completely forgot to factor in my senility (oops), and a month or two went by. At some point, the board blew/was knocked off, leaving that 18" gap open.

Anyway, in early November, something got into my enclosure and killed all of my hens. It also went to my next door neighbor's and killed 12 of her 18 chickens, and injured two more, quite severely. This happened the same day, and sometime between 7am and 2:30pm. Her enclosure was completely open on top, but she uses a 6' fence, and they had to jump another 6' fence to get in her yard in the first place.

I'd grabbed some of their final eggs out of the fridge and tried to incubate them. I had a few develop to about 9 days or so, and then die. I knew the turner was broken or something on my incubator, so after that failed hatch, I sent it back for repairs. They told me something big was wrong with it (like main circuitboard or something like that), so I'm wondering if that may have been responsible for my failed hatch.

I get the incubator back on Thursday (if I can manage to be home when UPS comes), and I'm dying to try it out and see if it's working. I don't want to do shipped eggs, so I'm trying to find someone locally who has fertile eggs in the varieties I want so I can experiment.

Welcome!

Saw your page... I had this problem with my SLW getting her bum picked by my mean EE, I got this spray called "bitters" from Petsmart, the guy said it deters dogs from chewing, I will tell you what it tastes NASTY and just breathing the mist smell I was miserable for hours getting it out of my nose. BUT it did not work at all. They seemed to be attrracted to it more than ever. So if there is a next time I will try the aloe! Thanks for the tip!

See, I somehow ended up on UPS's naughty list. They absolutely will not leave ANYTHING for me (even if it's a $3 car part) unless I personally sign for it. Signing the back of those "sorry we missed you" papers isn't enough. Customer service claims said naughty list doesn't exist, but the back up driver has admitted to me that my account is flagged. I think it's because about 10 years ago, a driver delivered my package to the wrong address. I called to report I never received it. After a couple days, I figured out where it was (they reversed the west and the north on my address, so I went to the opposite house and asked them if they'd gotten a mysterious package) and went and got it and withdrew my report, but they continue to have me on the list.

You guys, I'm BUYING eggs to eat. And the yolk is pale, pale yellow. And the shell is white. It's so sad.

Wow Sphinx, I can't imagine losing my girls! I'm so sorry. It sounds like a racoon or even a ferret. Ferrets will go in and just kill, not eat the chicken..so will racoons. And, we have both in Utah. Lost a lot of chickens to ferrets in another city years ago. They are mean little stinks.
Well, I know you want you incubate your own, but just to let you know, I have 13 out of 13 very viable New Hampshire eggs coming along in my incubator. These are heritage..as the breeder has been breeding for about 3 years now if I remember correctly..just know they have been breeding them for a while. I will be keeping them for a while once they hatch, which is supposed to be on Christmas Eve,

and then I want to keep a couple of those or even three for my flock this spring and summer. They mature early, so start laying right around the normal 20 weeks, or even earlier, and then they lay like the sex link, or leghorn, everyday! I am one to want a couple of pretty girls, and then a few good layers. I will have my EE's that lay the pretty eggs, and then my New Hamphshires to lay. Plus, crossing my fingers that I have a pullet and not a cockerel in my SLW. They are pretty, and can go broody. Plus, I have two lavender bantam Cochins. They are adorable, and hoping they are both pullets, but will only keep one if they are.
If by chance you want some New Hamphsires that will be laying by spring..around May, let me know. Look them up. They are a pretty bird too.
Good luck with all you have going/planned.

Sphinx--
I am so, so sorry for such a big & unexpected tragedy, especially when you (& your neighbor) had done a lot of preventative work, but the attacker slipped through still.
I'm sorry you weren't able to get babies with your chickens' eggs, & hope you will be able to get some soon from others.
My sincerest condolences

Now you have to tell us, well, me, where Herriman is. I keep thinking North part of Utah. Watch me be completely opposite. I know, you are South. No wait, it could be East? One more guess, and I guess you are in the West side of the state.
Anyway, welcome to our fun, silly, very understanding, and very helpful thread here in Utah.

Ha! Looked it up. You are SouthWest of Salt Lake. I didn't even thing to go with the combined areas. Oh well, you are north of me.

that is odd. does the shipper require you to sign for it? do you or the shipper have the package insured? i would not exactly trust the driver but that is just me. there are some bad customer service people and there are some good ones. its the luck of the draw i guess. it may be your address is hard to find so they want to cover things on their end. i do have a family member who does work for ups so i know a little bit from what he tells me but i am not an expert so take what i say with a grain of sand. oh and if you are nice to them they will be extra nice to you
