Utah!

Tried warm milk and yogurt. She wont do it, other than a nibble. Thanks for the info-- I will try a baby aspirin , see if we can gag it down her, I had not come across the aspirin info. Will soak her again in the morning. We just got done with a second soak, more oil, no improvement yet. She is really tired so I am going to get her dry and let her rest.

I have heard some bad stories about eggs breaking inside the hen and then infection setting in, so I would advise against trying to break it to get it out! Also, be careful about putting anything up her vent - I've read that that can cause infection, as well. I agree with bird-man, definitely keep her warm and moist through soaks or a "sauna". It sounds like you're doing good! Don't give up

Lisa, you are doing so much for her. All that you can do. You are so caring. If she is trying to lay a big egg for the first time like my Partridge did, then it would probably be a lot harder on a smaller hen. That makes sense that she is breathing like that because she is trying to pass an egg. All you can do is treat it like she is egg bound..sounds like the more possible thing, unless you come across something else. As long as she isn't having the sniffles. And you already said she sounds ok that way. So keep up the good work. If she doesn't make it, at least you tried. Just like my first bumble foot. Boy, that was something. My poor girl's foot was so swollen. It took a good week doing the soaking, then cutting it open and getting the plug out, then soaking, and rewraping. Boy, the things we do for our chickens. It's hard when you know that something isn't going too get well, then you have to put them out of their misery, like I had to with my black EE. It was so sad to see her wobble around like that. I had another chick about the same age do the same thing. It was my first time seeing this, so I decided to wait to see if she would get up and walk after a few days. Well, she got really bad. She started to not only wobble, but wobble, then fall to the side, and her head would stay to one side. All of that happened within a couple of days. So, I decided I didn't want my black girl going through all of that, and she really was looking like the other one...in fact she had started shaking her head. I have no idea what that is. I just know a chicken can't live like that, and I really don't think they would live.
Anyway, keep us updated. She is a lucky girl to have you there for her. Oh, with the asprin, melt it in some water, then if you have a syringe, or dropper, put very small amounts down her throat at a time. If you put too much in her mouth, it will go down the wrong tube..really! Then she would have fluid in her lungs. Just a small tiny bit at a time. You will know when she has had enough, she will swallow normal, if too much, she will stretch her neck out to try and get it down.
Good Luck with your special baby.
My hatch..not good..will talk about it tomorrow.

Ohhh, Lisa, I hope this fixes her. Wouldn't it be exciting if it is her first egg, and after this, she was all better AND laying eggs?

Keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Cynthia, I'm sorry to hear your hatch wasn't good. I'll come watch for an update tomorrow. :-(

Thanks! I read that about breaking the egg too--so I will not try that at all. Did put a dropper with some oil in her vent --just barely in--hope the oil is sterile enough :( I did not think about that, I washed the dropper too but should have sterilized...crossing fingers I did not get her sick. Who knew chickens could be this complicated :/ :/ I appreciate all the info and help ! Cross your fingers for us. She had a very small very bright grass green colored watery stool a few minutes ago. Do not know if that means anything :/ After not going for a day and a half (and who knows how long before I caught on to this) there has got to be no room left, poor thing. And I did get her to swallow one baby aspirin. I feel like she is my project now, and I am determined to try to help :)

Cynthia and Sphinx, thanks for the good wishes ! I did get that aspirin down her before I saw your post, I hope it went down ok. i crushed it up then my DH held her kinda sideways while I held her mouth open and just kept sprinkling it in. Not very good form but it went down....I was just wondering if when she got roughed up by the mean EE if something got injured that might be causing this. She had two open wounds in a row that were really bad. She has had a rough life so far poor girl.

Cynthia--sad news about your hatch. Let us know what happened, hoping for your chicks to arrive to distract you from the bad luck :(

Well, I have one chick "hanging" out. It the EE egg. I knew when I had no pips last night, that it just wasn't going to happen. So, took out one egg to see that I was pretty sure wasn't vialbe..sure enough, gone. And, it had what I don't know for sure is..that gooey thick stuff in the shell..maybe egg white? Well, at any rate, when ever I have had chicks pip, and this stuff is there, they drown in it. And sometimes, it's a watery thing going on. I pulled two more eggs..they had quit a looong time ago.

Then I found one alive, but with that gooey stuff, and it was one with the air sac clear up the sides. No room to turn, just like I thought. I have seen this. It's head was bent in a position that causes a deformed neck, can't recall the name of it now, but they end up not making it. It was black. Remember Lisa, I want a black Ameraucana. Another one I opened, more thick goop. It was a lavender. I got it's beak up out of the goop, but not sure if it got some in it's lungs already, because it didn't make it. I've helped early many a time, and when they don't have the goop or water, they usually make it. I just take it slow. Now, the EE had the watery stuff..a lot. I thought, oh great, I best hurry and get that beak up, which it was up more than the others, so it didn't take long. I just let it hang out, because it still has yolk to absorb. It didn't chirp or peep at all. Just started breathing the right way though.
Got up this morning, saw that it was still alive, had some goop stuck around it's eye, so I got a warm paper towel and wiped it off. Guess what that little baby did? It peeped! I think this one will make it. Now, just hoping that it's legs and toes will be ok by the time I get it out, because there is no way it can turn now, it is stuck just like it is until I work the egg shell away through out the day. I knew it would shrink wrap, but, I may have myself a black EE. Can't tell if it is going to have other colors or not..could be black with some blue, will have to wait and see.
I know I won't be putting even the slightest damp egg in an incubator again. I believe this was the problem. They weren't as bad as the last ones that I posted with the newspaper wrapping, but damp enough that I was tossing a lot out before lock down. Then those air sacs! Oh well, let's say a little prayer for this little one, well actually, the biggest egg that went into lock down. Hope it's a big girl!

Oh I hope she makes it! And she is a black EE for you :) So sad to hear about the other little ones. It has been a rough patch with the eggs...does that happen a lot or is it because of the time of year and shipping/cold? Hope your chicks come soon----the whole operation with no tracking sounds shifty :idunno

I don't usually have this kind of bad luck with eggs..really! I did buy last year during the winter, but my hatches were good.

Yes, I would not be surprised if I do not get any chicks showing up this week. That would make me really disappointed in a good breeder..and a judge of chickens at that. I hope they come, now more because I would like to think better of this person.

Well, there's Shinx with her little one that she's working on. You, and your cute little one, and now my little EE still hangin in there. Come on chickies!

I'll also have some barnyard mix chicks from rare breeds of chickens. I have some hatching under my broody hen on the 28th and then a dozen hatching next month on February 5th. PM me or Email me with any questions or just call! I need some extra cash to get some feed and help my dad pay the rent.
Hey Hector, what have you got going on now? I miss seeing you! Next time I'm in Orem, which isn't very often, I will have to stop by and see you, and what you are up to. How is Fanny? How much longer before those babies Hatch? Is she still brooding in the same place? Tell your mom and dad I said hi. Tell your mom she is beautiful!

I got your e-mail, just haven't written back, but I don't need any more eggs right now. Sounds like your friend has quite the mix going on. I bet they are cute mixes. Thanks anyway though!
I didn't know you had a guinea pig.
I see you are selling some things, and needing some work, hope you guys are doing ok. I wish you lived closer, I could think of some things for you to do!
