I've seen the mounting in the past too. My husband happened to be out side when it happened and saw it, he says, what in the world?? I think that hen is confused!!

If you are going to be in the show cant wait to see you there, If you have ever shown in this show could you give me the basic rules of what I have to get dont to show my birds.
Thankyou

P.S. 21 days untill eggs hatch and I will be selling on KSL.com

mine dont do it in front of me because they see me as the rooster (i guess less dominate roosters do not mate in front off the top rooster much) but i have walked in on it

Yeah, I never saw it with my grown hens either, but I was also the acknowledged top rooster. LOL

But, it's really good to know it's normal.

NOT sure why this yellow popped up..hit a wrong button up there but any way~~~

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY TO ALL..HAVE A GREAT DAY!

They are growing so fast week old tomorrow.
Doing it all the legal way. SL county animal services coming out to inspect the coop and give us our permit this week.
But the girls wont be out there for a few more week. Til then in the front room under close guard of the cat. LOL
Wife is amazed as to the fact their feathers are growing out so fast.

Forgot to ask the question I was really posting for. What do most of you use in your nest boxes for nesting materal?
Just thinking for when I move them out side. I want to be ready for everything and I know I wont see any laying til Sept-Oct time.
The litter question seem to have a lot of questions more then answers. So I would like the local take on this.
Thanks everyone.

ChickenDad, they are cute! That is very cool that you're having the inspector come out to OK everything for you. How exciting for you guys to have chickens!

I've got kind of some fun news on the predator thing. Last night, my boyfriend and I were up checking the traps and making sure that the birds were all ok. The girls were all tucked in safely and the chicks were fine, a little quieter than usual but fine. While we were in the shed with the chicks, one of the horses snorted loudly and my boyfriend went out to see what the deal was, but found nothing out of the ordinary. After we shut the shed back up, we went over to where my two late-hens were so that he could show me the damage they suffered. We were standing about twenty feet from the traps and were on the other side of a couple of trailers and vehicles, and not ten seconds after we got over there, we heard one of the traps twang and something running off. Just by the weight and gait of it, we figure it WAS a raccoon (I was beginning to wonder about a skunk) This was all around midnight, and whatever it was that was snooping around clearly wasn't bothered that we were so close. I'm hoping we catch it soon.

Oh and one other little non-related tidbit: We have a BSL hen that's at least a couple of years old who we thought we were going to have to do away with, because she hadn't laid for several months after we got her. Well, she has started laying again! She has a lot more weight on her now and by golly, her eggs are the tastiest I have ever had.
