Aww red..those are so cute. You will love the Welsummer. I have one, and they give the prettiest speckled eggs.
I also have a speckled sussex, one of the small ones, I got from McMurry that made it. She is starting to speckle out nice. I really really like her. She is one that will come up to me just out of reach, then turn an go the other way, not quite sure of me yet. The Pencils do the same, they are friendly. The NH, won't come near me, nor will my little lavender My black EE, she's a sweet one too, I can tell. She is getting less and less puffy cheeks as she gets older...?

Here's a couple of pictures of my Baily on her eggs. She looks worried in the one where she's looking at the camera..like, what is that? Will it hurt my baby eggs?
She did the most amazing thing..at least to me..today. I am learning more and more just how smart chickens are. I went out to collect eggs around noon, I always peek in at Baily, and what do I see? I see an egg over by the back wall. I said to her..no Baily..you can't do that! I lifted the top off of the brooder, and then I saw that it was one of her own eggs. She had snuggled all of the fertile eggs over by the wall left of her in the picture. Left that one by itself. I took the egg in to clean it, and I barely got started washing it, and it just broke. Very thin shell. Her last egg until these babies hatch and she starts up again. She knew! She moved those eggs from that one she laid.. they have been more in the middle where she is in this picture. I cleaned up the nest for her this afternoon. Now she is snuggled back more where she likes to be. She was right up against that wall before. Too funny.

Yes, I'm excited to see what these girls will look like when they're grown up! I hope my EE keeps her beard........I want a bearded lady.............How noticable was the beard on your black one, Cynthia?

Can someone give me some advice on my little black silkie. I think she has gone broody. She doesn't appear to be sick. Just wants to stay in the coop. I had first thought maybe she was having problems having an egg but she had it and then stayed there on the egg. I took the egg away and put her out of the coop but she went right back in after getting something to drink. She is only 10 months old. Isn't that to young for her to do this? I'm not sure what to do with her. I don't have a rooster. Should I get eggs for her to hatch and where can I get them? I'm not sure what to do and what is best. I'm new to chickens I'm still in my 1 st year of having them. Thanks

no she is not too young to go broody. silkies are known for being broody, some say they go broody more than any other breed. you can get her eggs to hatch or you can try to break her of being broody. my hen that went broody i stuck in a wire bottom cage that was raised up a little and made sure she was in the light. actually because it was in the summer i put the cage in the run and left her out there until she snapped out of it

Where do you live? I would try getting barn yard mixes for her first. See how she does with those.

Red---love those chicks! The EE is very cute!

Auntie Hattie-I have a bantam that started going broody at 7 months. She goes broody for about three weeks (as long as it takes to hatch) then snaps out of it for ten days-2 weeks, then the cycle starts all over. I have never put eggs under her. She just sits, and sits....then stops. I want to try this spring with the eggs. But at least in my experience is does not last forever. It goes away after awhile without any intervention from me. I do feel bad for her, she is so determined to jump on everybody's eggs, and when I take them she acts heartbroken. But after she gets over it, she could care less, and starts laying every day again. She gets scrawny when she sits, but she fattens right back up afterward....and her health seems pretty robust no problems. We have been through this cycle 6-7 times so far, I wonder if she did have eggs to hatch and babies to care for if she would get it out of her system and stay "unbroody" longer.

Auntie Hattie if you were here in northern Utah I would offer to trade or buy her from you I have really been looking for a broody. However, if you are up to having a few chicks, I agree with Cynthia I would just go get some cheap fertile eggs from a farmer in your area and let her sit on them. Good luck!
