Utah!

Okay, photo-op moment for the new chicks. Now that they are fluffed and cute, I thought I'd put up decent pics of them to annoy everyone with like all good parents do.

This is the late hatching pair that had to be assisted out. They aren't quite as fluffed as the others yet, but they are walking around great and seem quite healthy. I still have the bandaid on the one's legs, more because there isn't much point in taking it off before it wears off. Doesn't seem to bother the little one at all.

This pair appear to be actual BLRW's (at least in person--the camera isn't showing the colors all that well).

This pair appear to be Silvers.

And, of course, the pair of Austrolorp mixes--you get two pics of them, since they are so dang cute!

I'm likely going to put them all up on KSL tomorrow unless someone here wants to take them off my hands. I'm going to try to re-home them before next Wednesday (when the other set hatches) to make room.

OK, I went to bed last night and had the brooder warming up with some sugar water and feed ready with my 2 chicks that had hatched the night before and could not stop thinking about waking up in the morning and driving to go get my box of babies. I kept the phone next to my bed and woke up at 6:00. I got up ate breakfast, checked on my chicks downstairs, watched some TV, no calls. I got really worried and was told chicks get to the post office around 7:00 am and the post office sometimes gives them to you from the back door since they don't open until 9:00, Well, 8:00 came so I went off to school and my mom said she'd go get them if they called. I went to school and right at the beginning of 2nd period, I got called down to the office to check out and my mom and I were off to the post office!!!!!When I got there around 10:00 I was so happy. I walked in and a mother and her daughter walked in right behind me, I asked the lady if she had my chicks and she walked into the back and brought them out. I was so happy when I saw my box :) As I was walking out, the little girl stepped in front of me and said"Hey! Those are my chicks! Give them back now!" Apparently they went to get chicks too LOL. The mom gave her her box and she walked by me and said sorry lol. Cute. When I got home my mom and I went to the kitchen table and we looked, and looked, and LOOKED, for some scissors (We have a very hard time placing, and finding scissors in my house) Finally we found them and were ready to open it when one chick popped her head out of one of the holes in the box lol. I poked her back in and when I finally opened the box I dropped the scissors and was amazed! There was lots of green poop on the excelsior pad and it was smelly but cute.I took all the chicks down stairs and dipped their little beaks in the water, and added their gro-gel to their feed. They are too cute and I'm so happy I finally covered all the things in raising chickens.(It looks like I got 9 Buff Brahmas, 4 Salmon Faverolles, 1 BLRW, and some EE? Theres lots of chicks with chipmunk backs but they could be anything. Only 3 have beards and green legs. We'll have to wait and see)

Hector they came!! What a great story! I'm so happy for you!

<< That will be next week. I hope. Hoping this time none are dead, or will die..so all of yours made it alive? Wow! Sounds like you do have a couple of EE's in there, and I wonder if you got some Barnevelders. Or, if they have silver chipmunk stripes, you know what those are..SLW.

Well, we set up the broody pen for our Baily. She can't get out, and the other chickens can't get in. She has plenty of room to go away from her nest to eat and drink..and poop. :) I put an egg under her last night to see if she would stay on it, just one of my leghorns unfertile ones. She did. Boy that egg was warm when I replaced it with some BBS Ameraucana eggs. I have been out there checking to see if she is staying on them. She is, but sometimes gets up for a bite and drink, then back she goes, doesn't seem to want out. So, she only has two weeks to go with these. I candled them before I took them out. Could see some babies swimming happily..it will be so fun to see her as a mommy. I can just hear her voice now. When I had my first broody bantam..cochin, she was nice and didn't growl at me..and neither has this girl..yet. I can't imagine her doing that. The cochins are so sweet, love them! I am going to keep a LF cochin when they hatch. I want a splash.
Windy here again! I think tomorrow is going to warm up? Hope so.

Brad, wish that place you are talking about was close to us. I would love going in there and checking things out! Sounds like a place my hubby would like to check out too.

Lisa, I'm here.

There you are haha! Been busy with Baily. How cute is that? She sounds like she is doing good so far. And you are trusting her with those bbs eggs.....that has got to be hard! Hope it all goes well. I am excited for you. When do your araucana's hatch? Are they next?

Hector---Congrats!!! I love the play by play story. I am so glad it worked out, that storm had me worried. Have fun with those fuzzies!

Donna---great pics! Thanks for sharing :) Hope they find a happy home. I am soooooo glad I do not live by you lol I am truly 'overrun with chickens'. And I cannot say no, it is becoming a problem :p :p

I only put three eggs under her, they are the ones that the folks sent me 22 of. I had to throw 4 out today that weren't fertile, and the those 3 went out..come on Baily.

Donna, cute babies..I'm kind of glad you live waaaay far a way too. But then again..I wish every one on this thread lived closer. Man, we could have a hay day or two, or three..or four. I can see the swap meet going on forever!

Hector. What a great kid. I don't want to embarrass you, but I just have to tell everyone here what a great kid you are. Such a gentleman. Soft spoken fun boy. He does great in school, has extra curricular school activities..like, stage work, ceramics after school. Have I embarrassed you enough yet bud?
Don't mean to, just want everyone to know you a little better. You take care of your birds, you love them..like we do.

I feel really blessed for having met you..and..the others that I have met.
Wish I could meet you all..looking forward to meeting Brad next! Waiting for good weather, and for all my eggs to be hatched before we head North. Probably by the end of the month, then my son, can watch them for me. Talk about another great kid!! :))
Unless Brad, you want them sooner. We really haven't discussed how we are meeting. Did you want to meet us half way? If you want your birds sooner than I can make it up that way, then it's not a problem for us to meet in Orem. Let me know what you want to do.

They sound cute.

Cynthia, that sounds fun with Baily. I'll bet she's pretty pleased with herself for getting three monster eggs, heh.

corvidae - Sorry to have left you hanging on the offer for the chicks. I have been working on getting a few more and until yesterday, it was all up the air. I don't know that I can take your 8 right now, but thank you very much for the generous offer! I just think that having them would be more than I can handle at the moment, and I'd want them to go to a good home where they get the TLC they deserve.

And here are my new babies:

I got my Welsummer! That's her on the bottom left. I also grabbed up a Speckled Sussex (couldn't help myself) and a bearded little Easter Egger who is soooo cute. The EE was in a box advertised as "Araucana/Ameraucana", so I'm pretty sure she's an EE. I still have trouble identifying the color of legs, but her legs were a medium-to-dark kind of brown. Not slate.

This is the EE. The lighting is terrible in these pictures because they were taken with my phone camera, and it was nighttime in the shed where the brooder's set up. She's gray with a black back and a coppery patch on her little brow. I think she's fast becoming my favorite, too. She's very easy to pick up and handle compared to the other two. I want to go back out tonight and check on all three of them. I know they have a light and the shed is warmer than the outdoors, but I still worry they'll be too cold!
