Utah!

We have (hopefully) all girls. I only picked chicks if they were all sexed as pullets. I wanted a Delaware but they were only straight run at the IFA in SLC so I got two Buff Orpingtons instead. My first girls were two each of Easter Egger (one with puffy cheeks for our neighbor and one without for us, purely an accident but these are the only ones I can tell apart), BO, Speckled Sussex and Welsummer--we are keeping one of each of these and giving one of each to our friends. I went back the next week and got a Barred Rock and a second EE (with puffy cheeks) for us. I really wanted an Australorp because my husband is Australian but I wasn't able to find any day olds and I didn't want chicks that were already fairly old.

Awesome. I have a Welsummer and an EE baby and love them already. They're starting to hit their teenager stage, hehe. I was tempted to get a BA and a BO this year, but I don't have the room for any more birds right now. Bah

Red, here's more poof than the last ones. I'm just dying, because I want to keep, a splash, in the Ameraucanas, a splash in the cochins, and a black, and a blue in the Ameraucanas. These are some of the prettiest babys..other than those EE's. They change in color and are fun, these will stay blue, black, not sure how the splash will turn out, but fun to watch.
Picture overload...
The top three pictures are of the ameraucanas..well, there are two cochins in there, but the rest are Ameraucanas.
Cochin
feathered feet
a black cochin, the yellow will go away

Brad, it was great to meet you..you aren't any taller than I thought you would be! LOL...you told me how tall you are..you are tall! So is your dad. Nice folks your are! I pictured you with brown hair though, you are more blonde.
Hope your babies are settling in ok. I hope you like the pencil after waiting all that time.
Sorry you had to wait on traffic because of an accident. Guess what? We had two accidents to slow down for on our way home. How crazy is that? And, the biggest problem being, there was no where for the people to pull over because of the construction walls, they were out in the freeway! Two different pile ups, not far apart..both were cars filled with youngins. Everyone was ok, nothing serious..just like the one you saw. Bumper damage.
Hope you got home ok, now that I'm typing this! I'll be coming back on just to see! Write when you can.

it was great to meet you too! you are so nice and you do not look old at all, you look like you are in your mid 40s at most. your husband is a veryy nice guy. lost of good energy comeing from the two of you. we actually hit the traffic perfect because on the way home it was backed up to the point of the mountain. i love the little girls and they are so worth it. they are running around with my girls and are doing great. they are fitting in well. i feel like i should of payed more for them, even my dad said that. you are a very fun person cynthia and it was great to meet you, one day we will have to get together. my hair changes color a lot, when i was a kid i was as blonde as you can get but now its gone brownish and it gets darker every time i cut it. i have been busy cutting two quakies down that are dieing. they were tall and it took a lot of work to take them down and clean it up and the wind did not help. now i am relaxing and having a beer. thank you cynthia for these great girls, its clear how well they have been taken care of and socialized. hope you had fun at winco. sometime if you are in the salt lake valley it would be cool if i could take you to some mexican markets, its very easy to get tons of food for cheap. i get my girls watermelon all summer and it does not cost me much. anyway i will post more later :)

It's a good thing I don't live closer to you, either! Those babies are incredibly hard to resist just from here.

And glad you got home okay, despite the accidents! Oh good, looks like bird-man did, too.

Cynthia, I wish I lived just a little closer to you--I had one little lone cream legbar chick hatch today (a boy, and he is just darling!) and I would have loved to have some of your babies to keep him company! Unfortunately, I have to work tonight and go up to Duchesne tomorrow, so I don't have enough time to get out your way from Bountiful. :( Very sad--your little ones are just adorable and I absolutely love Americaunas! My son is partial to cochins, but since he has the Bredas now, he doesn't get a vote anymore!

Aww thanks Brad! I am always happy to see my chickens go to people that love their chickens. So, that means that it would be nice to have Red and corvidae have some. I love chicken people!

Hey Brad, guess why there were so many accidents? It's color fest time down here at the Krishnah Temple..spelling...but you know, when they splash all that dye around on each other. I wondered why it was all these young people that were in the accidents. My son that works in the Macey's grocery said that people were coming in for bandannas for their faces. And, there were some kids from Texas, that came here just for that! It's getting more and more popular. Crazy.

I can hold babies if anyone wants one or two..let me know!

Glad you got home safe Brad..I'll take you up on that Mexican place! We are still planning on coming up that way for our anniversary. It will just have to wait until April. But, it will be for the same reason. :) 20 yrs.!

hey cynthia guess who went to roost like big girls? yep they are up on the roost. the pencil was going crazy trying to get up there and the little buff had to sleep there with her. the buff is a little small to be up there but she was not having any of that. not sure how she will get down but i will help her when i get up. they are fitting in better than i could ask for. they are so friendly! you did an amazing job socializing them!

Hi Guys, The water system was designed by my husband..utahchickendad. It is simple but kind of elegant in it's design. I will have to get him to explain it in better detail but the large tank has nipples so that the chickens can get water inside the coop and a pipe that goes from it to outside to under the coop which also has nipples. The filler portion is outside the coop and has a cap on the opening so that no dirt gets in. It has an overflow tube so that is doesn't get over filled (it holds 7.5 liters...almost 2 gallons). We got all the supplies except the nipples from Loew's plumbing department...except some of them don't carry the large pipe we made the tank from...so you have to check because it is 4" in diameter. If you would like further details, please send Utahchickendad a personal message. The girls seem to have settled in quite nicely because I think they grew a couple more inches since we put them out there! Or maybe it's just the fluffy feathers.

So glad the pencil made it to her new home, and the buff>! How cute they are roosting :) Glad everybody made it home ok with all that bad traffic!

Today I got a candler at the feed store. My flashlight was just not working that great---and wow what a difference, this one is lots brighter....and I could see 7 of 8 squiggling just a bit...at first I thought it was from me moving the egg---but I really swear I could see something moving in there! is that even possible? Or am I seeing things? It was an awesome feeling though to see the little vessels and a little critter in there! One was totally clear, but it was the only one I had put a question mark on because I thought it might be my BR egg, I did not catch that one in action, so it probably was not the right egg anyway. AND I was so excited because I was SURE I had killed them this afternoon, I left the blind on the window open by accident and ran uptown and the therm said 104 I was so worried, I hurried and waved the warm air off of them and got it right back to 100 and it has been 7 hours and they looked ok.....hope they stay that way! Geez i will feel so bad if they poop out because of my absent mindedness.

The four I put in after the fact (5 days later) also look like they are developing, I better find a second bator for them! I went ahead and put them in because I was worried the first batch would not work because they had been in an awfully cold part of the fridge. So far so good.

And YES when I went to the feed store I looked at chicks. And I was working that math. And I fell off the wagon and got a little white rock because (here is the justification) it was a bit older and would fit in with my peepers I got 9 days ago...and was one breed I had looked for and not found the last trip to the store. Ugh. I need to go to chicks anonymous. There really should be such a thing :/

Sphinx---I am not so sure about my lavender either. I am giving it two weeks and if it does not look as red as Diane's picture on ksl (I saved it for reference) I am calling it a girl and never looking back. I want it to be a girl so stinking BAD! Then she better lay blue! I will take light blue, just please oh please not another green egg. They are nice, but I am ready for my blue egg.
