I'd use a fingernail to scrape the worst of it off- they won't turn well if they're really soiled. I hope you get a good hatch, Sasha.

I have my chick cam live now. I did a lazy attempt at feather sexing. I think one marans is female, one is male. I think the lav am cross with the feathered legs is a girl, the other is a boy. I'm really hoping the lav am/bcm cross a girl, but I am not sure I have a clear head on that. The last chick, doesn't seem to be quite "right" to me. It seems smaller. It seems to tilt forward a little, and seems to squint its' eyes shut a lot. I haven't tried to feather sex it yet.

Donna, I think your post was perfect. I applaude you for having the guts to do it! You go girl! I hope he gives you some sort of break at least, it wiped out so many of your girls. I could not remember if the Isbars were eggs you hatched or chicks that were shipped? I was thinking chicks but now I think ...I thought...wrong if that made sense lol

SashaT Fun to meet you and your DH! Fun Fun! These eggs are little banty eggs, you guys they are so cute! I cannot wait to see the babies. Yes they are really poopy so we were wondering what to do, or not to do...Cynthia have you ever washed hatching eggs? Thanks for the link Red! Excited for our chickie meetup tomorrow. These babies are getting FAT. Really, so cute #1 is chunking up pretty good, #4 was the teeny one of the hatch and it is looking pretty good an fluffy now. I am going to miss them so don't forget pics when they get bigger!

Sphinx--checked out that camera---I LOVE the white bums on those Marans. When they are in the feeder, butt to the camera, it is super cute. Whoever thought chicken bums would be cute?!

It is so fun to see what everybody has. Sphinx, your babies really are adorable. I cannot quit staring at them. I can't wait for my Marans to hatch now, I sure hope I get a girl. If I don't get a girl from both the Marans eggs and the Wh Am eggs, I might have to do one more batch. Now hatching is like chicks, I keep saying no more then I start talking myself back into it.

Red, thanks for the link! Sphinx, thanks for the advice. Thinking I'm going to go ahead and scrape the worst of it off with my nails. Thankfully not all the eggs are messy. I'm going to attempt to hatch 8 of the eggs at my house; Lisa has the other 24. I'm so nervous and excited at the same time! So glad I have this wealth of information at my fingertips to help me out!

I need some advice, please! I received 32 bantam Wyandotte eggs in the mail today (yay!) which Lisa is graciously hatching the majority of for me. Several of the eggs are pretty soiled with spots of chicken poop. Should we clean the eggs at all or leave them? I don't want to chance a bacterial infection, but don't want to compromise the fetuses by washing off their natural protection either. What do you think?

I haven't read all the posts yet..just going ahead and answering what I do. I set them!!! I find, and you may not believe this, that most of the ones with poo..do just fine! Every time..not sure why? Oh, and no, don't wash that poo off!
Like Shinx said, you can scrape gently some of it off.
No need to get it all, just the big, really hard, big brown, round or long, did I say hard..stuff!

Chico- cute ducklings! I would love to have ducks.

Cynthia- How old is your silkie chick? Mine is one week old and doesn't have the feathering yours does. Funny thing about my black silkie is she is suppose to be a blue but that didn't happen :/
The other one is a Partridge. I just went out to the coop and now one of my white ones is going broody! I think it is contagious. Silkies are really fun to have my grandkids love them. I think I'm down to only three hens laying now. Not good.

My "girl" is 9 days old. So it does sound like they go broody often. I hear they sometimes go broody as soon as 6 months..and only having laid for a couple of weeks. Oh well, the incubators won't be in the house, they will be outside! lol...now if she can be nice to them! My last one was not good at all, to stay on, or to the babies.
