Utah!

Right on--looking forward to seeing you all! I should have BLRW's hatching that day, so we can all stare at the incubator for a few minutes and make appropriate admiration noises. Have you ever plyed the flashlight game with newly hatched chicks? It's rather amusing, actually, though probably a little wierd. But then, so am I!
Is the flashlight game the same as the red laser dot with cats/dogs? I had a Doberman that was obsessed with the red dot....he was hilarious! He quickly learned to associate the word "laser" with the red dot and start looking for it....was VERY handy in the show ring, because he would instantly turn "on" for the judges!

You guys are just way too funny. Red with the voices in her head...and Donna with the flashlight chickie tag, we are a loony bunch I think. It is fantastic!
I am up, it is 12:35 a.m. Been cleaning pine shavings out of the garage all day.....and I came in to give up the ghost on that mess out there....checked my eggs.....I see one pip on a Blue Orp egg. Nada on the Marans and the Wheatens.....8:20 am. in 8 hours marks the 21 day .....so exciting

One teensy little pip.....hope I can sleep!

Woohoo! Here's hoping for a happy hatch! I may have to make a quick trip over to see you and the new babies once they've arrived!

Help!!! Hey Utah Chickies I am getting these tiny tiny black bugs. I thought they where lice so I cleaned and cleaned and powdered everyone and everything and They are back! They look like they are living in the straw more than on the hens (can't find them on the hens) but they are all over the broody eggs.

Does anyone know what they are?

Thank you muchly

I had one blue splash hatch a few hrs ago..tomorrow is hatch day for my last BBS chicks.  I don't see any more pips though..that always worries me, but, tomorrow is hatch day.  I hope I wake up to some. That baby will have been in there long enough by morning.  Will have to snatch it out.  It sure did hatch way ahead of the others.
I called Kirk, he usually calls back, but not today.  I may have to put these up on ksl if he doesn't call back, little stink.
Had to chuck a lot of Silkie eggs tonight..sad..some showgirl eggs too.  I want to keep a couple of those and watch them.  I will have the one coop cleared just for the Silkies this winter.  Plenty of nest boxes in there for broody girls!  :p

I have one out flopping around---pipped yesterday, out this morning. Just moved it to the brooder, it was making all the eggs roll around. I did not do cartons this time. Not a single other pip but one is rocking a bit and I can hear a chirp. It makes me nervous too that the rest are so quiet. Any more on yours yet? Mine has not fluffed up yet, pics in a few hours:) It is a Blue Orpington, with pretty dark eyes it just stares at me... Big chick--but the eggs were all real big. Hope to get more news on yours soon :) Did you hear back from your guy? Hope he comes back for these. I will be unhappy if he does not come get them like he promised.

No idea! I have not had to contend with bugs or critters yet. Crossing fingers!

I just got another chick. It's a blue. The fist one looks like a roo, this one looks like a girl, going by the short front feathers on the splash, and the onger ones on the front with the blue. I can't wait to see the blue fluffed up. I haven't bought from this gal before..countrycitygirl. One other is starting to zip, and another is pipped. But, no pips on a whole lot of others that I set for lock down. Thing is I really couldn't tell what was good or bad by the time it came to set, because it was too dark in the eggs..so, will have to wait and see air sacs were looking good though.
I called Kirk again, left a message that said, it's me again, Cynthia, call me back you little stink! I have some BBS hatching as I speak. lol..we'll see if that catches his attention. I'm sure he is seeing it. I watched him ignore call after call when he was here the second time. He looks at his phone, and just puts it back in his pocket..answered for his wife though...yeah, he knows who to answer to! lol...

This is why I don't use straw. I guess it's a good thing when you have a large flock, and really don't watch for those kinds of thngs..birds have bugs..yes Lisa, if you looked close enough, my guess is, you would probably see mites. It's normal. I just use the DE.
So, if there are bugs on the straw, get some DE and put it in the nest boxes..I use it in there anyway. I use DE about three times a year. On the butt, under the wings, and up on top of the neck area..behind the head, not on the head.
With straw, you have to remember, it came from a field. There were animals in that field with buggys. The straw has hollow stalks, great place for buggys to hide. Then hitch a ride with animals if they come along..if they are lice, or mites. Interesting you aren't seeing it on the birds snow....that good! If they were lice, my guess they would be right on those birds..so who knows what they are? There are so many kind of bugs out there. Let's hope that your broody girl is just having a snack every now and again on those little black bugs.

Another baby, blue..splash? I am wondering if the other one in there isn't splash too. hmm, will have to wait until I see them all together in the brooder. I think I will know better in a couple of days, and I'm sure I will have them, especially if I don't hear back from that guy by this afternoon. They are starting to do the zip real quick once they get that pip bigger..I like that!

Yes, come on, Brad. They have the sweetest little faces. Big, pudgy cheeks, lots of fluff, very petite little build to them, and the sweetest calm, dark eyes.
