Utah!

I think my husband and kids would rather die than actually join a bulletin board about chickens. My family is semi-tolerant at best, mocking me most of the time.

I tell mine it's a valuable resource and he's even got into a few gun forums when researching old gun stuff!

OK...end of the chick story. Since mom was mean and eggs got cold numerous times we broke open the rest of the full size. All were bad but two (so not near as fertile as banty hens). We could hear one trying to tap it's way out but not being effective and worried it didn't have the tooth developed enuf (Dora's did but her shell was much thinner).

This egg was from a full size white leghorn, father one of the lone ranger banty EE's. We started at the air sac and worked our way down (per Dr Cynthia's instructions). We were so concerned we didn't stop to take pics. It lay there with its eyes closed and didn't look well, but was alive (and all this to be expected per Dr). Inside shell was dry and no yolk so we know it was ready.

Kept him/her warm (and taking it in a hot showered bathrm for humidity) and slowly she/he started moving/peeping/struggling to get up. We kept her legs under her and would rub her body gently to help with circulation. She's in with the other two now. Still a little unsteady on but perky. I don't think she'll go stradle (hope not anyway) but does rock back...but she's not much more than 12 hrs old. Named her/him Stormy. She's a very light grey (blue?) and at first her legs were as yellow as Sunny's but I can see them going grey or green and has puffy cheeks compared to Sunny but not as much as Dora.

Did the same with the other egg but unfortunately it still had yolk attached and died quickly. :( Chick had neat coloring and we were sad - it just wasn't ready. But should hv been, it went under the same time as the rest. So many different stages of development - it was at least a wk behind.

Our little experiment was still drying and my daughter was out collecting another broody hen (buff orp) and more eggs.

I told her that we'd let the buff try to hatch her own eggs if possible. Too tough with all the loss. I think picking up a peeping pkg at the PO is more exciting.

So here's a pic of the trio. Stormy will be a cool roo or if pullet, I'll be excited to see what color of eggs she lays. She's almost as big as Sunny surprisingly. Dora's still a peanut but very active and was a mean to the new one last night so Dora spent the night isolated. Poor little Stormy kept trying to follow Sunny around and crawl under her. All that walking did her good tho. The feathers on the top of her head finally fluffed up after the photo. Sunny showed pure joy at having Dora back tho - cute!

Sorry, daughter number 2 for some reason decided to go with back yard herds since she doesn't have anything feathered. So I don't think we will get all of us on here together.

LOL! My family has snuck up on you! Brycen hangs out over in the Backyard Herds section-she's into the goats and horse...but helps out with all the other critters willingly, so who knows? Maybe we'll get her on here eventually, too.
So.......the perils of having the family all on here......you get the same information over and over.

Thank you for the welcomes to the forum. So funny story this morning (and from before as well). I recently retired from the Army and finally had to get a "local" driver's license. When I received my license from the state of Utah, the gender on my license was a "U".
gig.gif
Sasha goes in with her aunt to the license office for another reason and asked the lady why mine had a U and hers had an F. All the ladies had a laugh at my "undetermined" gender.

I go in the next day to have it corrected and I get the same lady that Sasha had talked to the day before. She got to laugh again. Today I get my new corrected license in the mailbox and Sasha says "it's about time you get your man card".

Nobody answered my question so ill ask again. I just found out we can get 2 more chicks are town is now allowing chickens in town up to 6. So i was just wondering. What you guys think is the best for really warm summers and very cold winters? I have 1 RIR, 1BO, and 2 i have no idea what they are. I thought about a silkie for fun. Ive also looked at SLW and JG. So any help would be great.

Oh man I thought I did reply. Was thinking on this.....depends if you want good old classic breeds that lay lots of larger plain tan or white eggs or if you want to get into more rare or exotic types. Good standbys for egg laying?----I would get a Barred Rock, Black Sexlink, Gold sexlink. or Black Australorp. Those have decent temperaments as well usually.....and are pretty available at the local stores. Also it depends on the other two you have. If you post pics we can likely tell you what you have. Fun ones--Easter eggers that lay green or blue eggs. It is fun to have one of those in your flock.

THEN if you want the harder to find varieties (some of these are around at the stores earlier in the year) in some fun colors or fun eggs---Marans, Welsummers, Ameraucanas (eggs).....Cochins, Wyandottes, Frizzles (looks)......Cynthia is hatching some nice Welsummers soon (Pretty speckled darker brown eggs).....I have some Wheaten Ameraucanas hatching next week (blue eggs) those are around on this forum. Olive eggers are fun too, they are a cross of a blue egg layer and a darker brown egg layer....The feed stores have some few basic breeds left, I am still seeing Barred Rocks, sexlinks and australorps in limited quantities---I noticed last year in July for Pioneer Day there was a bigger selection for a few weeks of the good egg layers I listed above. Silkies and Polish are really fancy and cute looking, but they are more ornamental, so if you are not about the eggs as much and want one or two that are just really fun looking that would be the route to go.

Hope that helps!

Elk, good job! I love the coloring of Storm! Wow, looks like it's going to be an interesting color. With leghorn in the genes, if that is a pullet..you will get a lot of eggs, and probably nice sized! Where did you get Sunny? I missed that somewhere I guess. I love your little banty. Looks to be a girl. Your little Storm should perk up better today. Just make sure he/she gets a drop of water every now and again. I know you know, but just a reminder, she probably won't want food at first, but that is ok for a couple of days. Glad you got another out of that bunch at least.

Kidasoto---looking back I saw pics of your chicks. So scratch the Golden sex link, I think you might have something similar in there :)

Elk your babies are so cute! Love the little sleepy head.

Ok help me decide. I got my gift certificate---here are my choices, I cannot make up my mind. A dozen fertile hatching eggs---Dominique, Delaware, Black Australorp, or Silver Laced Wyandotte? They are all on sale for $19.99/dozen. I do not know if I would keep any of these, I have my flock pretty much done for this year......wonder which ones would sell the best. Don't see the Dominique or Delawares in the store as much---but the SLW are always quite popular, and the BA are probably what i would go for if I was looking for more for the eggs. Cynthia do you have suggestions on which would have more interest this time of year? I might do the eenie meenie minie mo. Plus I do not know what quality these would be......Hmmmm...

I think you are right on with the thought of the Australorp selling quick. They seem to go pretty quick in the stores. I seem to see the SLW left over when I go into Cal Ranch..the Australorp and the RIR's, sex links, and Orpingtons sure go fast..so, thinking folks are wanting those egg layers, and the Australorp are know for that.
I won those Marans, remember? I asked her if I could get some of her EE's, go half and half..she did. Those EE eggs are HUGE! And yes, a pretty color of blue, not the dark blue, but a good med. color of blue..no green. I've not liked the marans for a long time now..I know, hush my mouth!! lol. So, I am with you on deciding what to do with some of those, because I don't want to keep any of the Marans, they have always been on the mean side over here at my house. Maybe I just didn't luck out with a nice one, because I know a lot of people love them, and say they are sweethearts. Anyway, have to find homes for some of those, because they seem to be doing fine in the bator. They came from MI.
Good luck on deciding. I wonder if you would want to keep one of those pretty Delewares if you got those. :)) They do get big though, so do the Dominique, like the barred rock do. The Delewares sure are pretty though. My neighbor has one. I've had one. And, the one I had was a sweetheart.
