Sphinx, corralling them would work best to get rid of the thistles, but be warned, if it's where you have grass, there's a good chance they'll try to demolish the grass, too. Mine kill everything I park them on. It's a total unintended bonus for my dear mother, who now has that much less yard work to do

That's cool that you guys have eggs that match your walls. Would it be cheating if I painted my room white and then got some white egg layers?

Got to go see Brad today (birdman) He's got some sweet girls out in the run. One of them laid an egg while I was there and started to sing the egg song. I haven't heard that sound in a while, so I thought it was great, but poor Brad was trying to shush her so that the neighbors wouldn't get irritated. She was kinda loud. It was fun, for sure. And I got me some new plants while there! Woohoo! Thanks again, birdman.

it was fun to have you out anytime i can talk plants and chickens is a blast for me and red here could not of come home with any chickens because i do not have any for sale

Yes, thank goodness. I don't even want to count how many chicks I have here right now, even if I AM babysitting some of them. I refuse to face reality. I will simply enjoy all of the cute cheeping and fluffiness...............denial is bliss..............or is that supposed to be ignorance?

Yes she does not do bantams. Only standard and she only sells pullets. I bought a few from her this year and they were all fine and all lived. Not sure what the problem was last year. There is also a guy named Jason that has cochins in pleasant grove. I bought some Barnvelders from her in Feb.

Does Jason do Bantams or Standards? Not really interested in going the chick route again this year either. Already raised our batch for the year. Had one death this year and one roo. The death was sad because it was a little banty hen that made it to 14 weeks and the other chickens turned on her suddenly, they all pecked her to death. I have no idea why either. They don't pick on any of our other bantams. Just this one hen that they culled themselves. We tried to save her but after four days in hospital lock down she didn't make it. Very weird situation all around.

It will be interesting! They were not packed near as nicely as other eggs I have ordered through the mail, this is the first time I have received broken ones... So don't know if I will get more there. These were on sale, plus I used my gift cert i won at chickenstock, so I am glad I did not spend a ton. The BJG eggs look really nice, they are really pretty, smooth, nice shells, clean.The egg cartons were stacked in the box, and the carton on top was the BJG, they were the ones that cracked

But I still have 8, so hopefully some will do ok. Hear that Birdguy? These will all be for you

Sorry about your broken eggs=( sounds like you have an interesting batch to cook, though... lol voldemort and vader, watch them be the prettiest chickies=)

That is a huge egg! I'm sorry you had a bunch get cracked. And too weird on one that has started. I will say this, if you're seeing veining, it's definitely alive. Because of my candling addiction, I've seen eggs die before, and the change is pretty dramatic. Veins disappear.

I can't remember if I ever showed you guys this or not, but I thought it was funny. When we bought this house, it was a "fixer upper". Great bones, but the house was very, very dated. We immediately set to work. When we did the front room, we chose a lovely shade of green for the walls. Fast forward two years, and I got an EE that laid eggs the exact same color as the wall. Here's a picture of the egg, wall, and a piece of white paper for comparison.

Wow, Red I'm not sure I like her set up either- telling people that everything is pullets even though it's straight run? Hmmmm. That icelandic roo is awfully cute.

It sounds like you and Birdman had a nice visit.

Jwoo, I don't blame you for being skittish, that would be so sad to lose a hen that way.

As for the thistles, it's out in our pasture area. They weren't getting that bad until our neighbor's had their house foreclosed on. Well, first, they had a horse, and it wasn't fed enough, and completely reduced their pasture to dirt. Then, the moved out, and their entire yard was consumed with thistles. They've been creeping their way over, and it's just gotten worse and worse. New neighbors moved in, and we've both been battling them, but it's been awful. I don't care if the chickens trample the area bare, as long as the thistles are gone. Here's one little area along the fenceline:



Here's the floor we put in for our new henhouse today. It's coming along nicely.
