Utah!

I'm totally cracking up over all the brilliant math figures!

There is another formula that I prefer when counting my the girl's animals. I have used that formula in my signature line below. The difference is that for some reason I never get above 2.

The only problem with any of these formulas is that the ordinance enforcers for the appropriate jurisdictions always seems to have their own formula.

Well, finally sat down to read through some of the posts I'd missed yesterday in all the hooplah. It looks like I missed out on some serious chicken math! Can I turn mine in late?

1 rooster + 1 hen + 2 cockerels + 1 mutt chick + 5 yet-to-lay pullets + 12 more chicks - 4 that are Mom's..........

= 0 + 1 + 0 + 0 + 0 - 4 = -3?! Hot dang, I've got some work to do. I'm in the negative!

Sundance, congrats on the pips and hatches!

Cynthia, you like to torture me, don't you? Those Exchequers.............it's a good thing I didn't see your post from yesterday until now. As you can see from the problem above, I'm in danger here.

And who was it that had sick hubbies? It was Cynthia and Sundance, wasn't it? I hope they're both feeling better!

So, I have another chapter for you in Red's Chicken Saga. Yesterday, I noticed that my lone hen (the Marans that had gone broody) has a hurt leg. She's getting better, according to my boyfriend, but she still doesn't want to put weight on it. A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend was out of town and had someone else caring for the animals. Well, they didn't know that they weren't to let the hen out of the run she was in, and somehow the poor thing got her leg stuck in none other than one of the traps we had for that blasted raccoon. Wow, don't I feel like an awful animal keeper? Not only that, but of the three surviving chicks the hen had, we think two were girls. And then a cat showed up and we're down to one chick. Guess which two the cat got?

Soooo, here's a picture of the remaining chick. Hmm, y'know, I gotta go out on a limb here and take a wild guess on this one. I think I shall call it a boy.

He's a cute little thing, for sure. But that face..........his huge feet.............his curling tail feathers! Why?

And speaking of boys, Sphinx, check these guys out:

The one on the left is the obvious mutt cockerel I got from you. The one on the right looked more like a GLW when he was a chick. And as much as I love these two, I think it's about time to send them off to freezer camp.

I promise I'm not always this negative, sorry

I'm actually feeling better than I did yesterday. Gotta go outside in a bit for my daily session of chicken therapy. A couple of the little pullets I got from Cynthia are getting super friendly. They'll fly right up onto your knee, shoulder, lap, whatever...........regardless of whether or not you're standing up!

Ok I got them candled. One BR egg out of the twelve was not fertile. ....I have 4 of the 12 EE eggs that look questionable.... of the 8 BJG eggs left, I have 4 that look really good, 2 that I cannot see in very good, and 2 that look like they may have a slight blood ring starting.......so altogether today 1 got tossed, and there are a few that may not work, but at least SOME are working, after cracked eggs, I am happy with that. Also the two mustardy yellow EE eggs look good :) And they are really easy to see through. A few of the BR and EE eggs that have started developing have a bit of what looks like might be a blood ring.....but not sure so we keep cooking! Definitely the BR are doing the best so far. Of course, they are the ones I have no plans for. I might have my eye on a few of the EE if they are super cute though.

Red----hope your Marans heals up. Is that something they can recover from do you know? And so sad about the chicks. Your place has been predator central! And the girls of course get caught by mr. kitty and the naughty boy saves himself.....that is a real bummer....have you seen that racoon at all lately? Need to fry that little one.....

Lisa, she seems to be healing okay. She's slowly getting more energy, but I don't know how often she's coming out of her coop. I pulled her out yesterday and watched her while she got a good drink of water. If it seems to be paining her too much, I'll have to cull her. Going to wait for a little bit before I make that decision, though.

Hooray for mustard (eggs)! I hope you get a good hatch from all those eggs. Especially the BJG. They're just so cool.

Awww, so cute! I can't wait to see how they turn out. Are you keeping all of them?

I won't be keeping all the sizzles. I will some available. I have another one that is not doing so good. She is out of the egg but laying curled up. When I touched her she was hard like the membrane had dried on her. I washed her off in warm water and gave her some sugar water for energy. She is still just laying there but I'll give her some time. I mixed up some electrylites and will give them to her in a couple of hours if she is still alive.

All these crazy chicken stories... sorry Red about all the chaos going on... sometimes it definitely seems like all the bad/frustrating stuff happens at once... so sorry!!

Still loving all the chicken math.. it makes me feel better about my addiction=) I'm thinking I'm going to have to ask for an incubator for Christmas... there's just no way around it...I'll have to cave and join in the fun.. When I was younger I always kept a few bantam cochin hens around to hatch out the eggs, and, thinking about it, always had a decent hatch rate... at least 75% or better, didn't have to throw out too many eggs that I recall... I guess I really should do it anyway, to have a really good idea how fertile my future hatching eggs are... Time to start incubating lessons (yes I've been paying attention to all the talk recently about hatching)...

Also, wish me luck.. I'm headed off to girl's camp tomorrow to be the nurse for the stake, yippee skippee!! Actually, I am excited, I went a couple of years ago and had a great time...

You can give her a little dexamethasone for inflamation. It will make her feel better. I had one of my dUncles injure her leg. Gave her a shot of Dex for pain. Made her feel much better. Sorry about your predator issue. sounds like you need a covered coop for a bit

OMG

Those are so cute! What a fun hatch!! Love the second super fluffy sizzle especially. And those cute little Araucanas, little puffy cheeks! They look double tufted even! Are they rumpless can you tell?

One is double tufted for sure the other i think is clean faced. Not sure about rumpless yet I am not handling too much just letting them rest and eat drink. My new bator came today

I was going to roll my eyes at your math formula, again; but then i realized you took the time to add my new ducklings to the mix, and decided it was okay because I know you actually like 'em. You just don't want to say so..

You forgot the incubatin' eggs though!
