Utah!

Thanks all she was way proud of her self. I was biking with her and her older cousin and she got ahead of us. When my nephews chain came off and i stopped to help She just kept on going by herself and finished . The kids tri is way smaller than a normal one. It was a 50 yard swim, a 3 mile bike ride and 1/3 of a mile run.

congrats on the first egg. I cant wait until mine start to lay.
sundance- the sizzles are getting so cute.

I'm glad we don't have any fires here in the basin. Sorry you guys are dealing with all that smoke.

Oh Man! That was today? I thought it was last week and I had missed and I felt really bad. Now I find out it was today and I missed it again!

You are still in luck! It starts today with a south valley tour. Then this Wednesday (if I remember correctly) is the workshop and next Saturday is the main tour. I don't have chickens, as I am into waterfowl, especially my dewlap toulouse flock, but I thought it may be pretty cool to check out.

thank you all for the warm welcome. could any one tell me what is the best way to take care of buff orpington's here in utah i dont want to loose them to the heat and that is the only problem we face right now please and thank you.

well my buff is still young but i treat her like all my girls. i have a fan in the coop on a timer, i always have fresh water, they have shade and they will dig a hole to sit in the cool earth, i will sometimes use a mister. i give them cold fruit such as watermelon that i get super cheap. and that is about it. i think orpingtons do fairly well in the heat but i may be wrong on that. mine is doing fine :)

sounds like something to try and i have to wait till my landlord gets the fence up but the coop is straw and cement the land lord said that if we want them then that is what we have to use but i am happy to comply and love my chicks they are 7weeks old as of yesterday

scott reed!

Isn't this heat bad? They say we are a good 10 degrees warmer than usual in this month.
I have sprayed my girls once in a while. They don't like it. :/
I wet the dirt they go to, they like that! :) They lay in the moistened dirt. I have plenty of shade, and they are still panting, oh, and of course, I have water every where for them. Try and keep it in the shade. I think it's time to start putting a bowl in the fridge to get a big ice bowl, and put it in one of the water bowls out there. They like that..at least my older flocks have.

A first egg! You should have been in the guess who lays first contest. The first person that had a chicken lay an egg, wins a doz. chicks from someone on here. J/K!!! Just what we don't need, we are just seeing who has a hen lay first. I've decided this heat is delaying the one I thought would lay soon. It's sooo hot, and now, it looks like we have a fire either up Spanish Fork Canyon, or, on the other side of Maple Mountain. There is smoke coming up from one of them..a lot..and that is right close to us. I am with Brad, really dread the fireworks this year. Everyone, spray your roofs..we do, we have neighbors that put off those big ones now that they are legal. I always find bottle rockets in our yard after the 4th.

Sundance, I'll take that blue little frizzle or sizzle, or what ever that cute little thing in in your second picture..the blue one, if I have the first pullet lay.

Hope you are doing ok with all that smoke! Brad too. It's pretty bad, we are getting it coming our way now..clear over the point to our valley. Plus, like I said, the other fire from the mountain by us. I feel for those firefighters!

just as long as you have enough vents then you will be good i think. so when you say straw and cement is it straw bales coated with cement? also remember most chickens can and will jump over fences. but hey enjoy your girls :) chickens are a lot of fun for sure. so did you build the coop or did the land lord?
