Utah!

I'd like to know how it keeps happening, too. This year has been an absolute nightmare. I think the solution is to move to Antarctica and just have an indoor heated coop forever more. I'm pretty sure that some people must think by now that I'm a needy, whiny case looking for handouts (I'm not, I promise!)
(Edit: Or, that I'm a complete failure at keeping animals. Oi)

If I weren't already overrun with chickens, I would happily get a Silkie. They are so, so cute and I love how furry they look. I think the partridge coloration is my favorite, though they're all pretty.

You have had a bad few months dang it and I'm sure no one on here thinks you have been whiny and looking for hand outs. Things happen. You are not a complete failure at keeping animals. You love them and take care of them. How can that be a failure. With outside animals we have to deal with all sorts of obstacles. It's such a bummer you having to deal with this again but don't give up on something you love. Fight back! Lets find you a mean dog! That likes chickens and turkeys as friends.

Hang in there we are all here for you.

Lisa, I'm sorry about that little polish. :-( That is so sad.

Red, no, the chick she's holding was a super dark olive egg. I think I was told the baby was a marans/wheaten ameraucana cross. I'm not sure. I'm really disappointed it's looking rooish, because it was an amazing colored egg, and the chick that popped out was a total surprise. That little guy was hatched the last week of May. My RIR that was supposed to be a GLW is now 6 months old and laying. I am so sorry about your turkey. Antarctica wouldn't work because you would have polar bears going after the birds. LOL I don't think you're whiny or a taker, I think you've had a very bad run of luck.

Hattie, you are so sweet! I've found that if I make the kids clean the house, I have more time. LOL I have set three fbcm marans eggs, and two hatched. The third was never fertile. So, I've had pretty good luck with them. I do think that dry hatch is key though. Your silkie is so cute! I think that in general, feral cats aren't going to go after adult chickens. Although possibly kittens. I hope your silkie is ok.

Whittni, cute new chicken! Glad there hasn't been drama with introduction.

TJAlred!!

Sundance, did you get committed to the hospital? (ha ha ha)

I tried to keep up with things...I know poor red thinks she is a bad animal keeper. Red, I have lost a few chicks to dogs, and one nice sized pullet to a ferral cat..and I have a fenced in yard! My golden barked a real nice alert bark early this morning, thinking that black and white cat we've been seeing lately was back. Caught it sneaking up on the grow out pen,,there is no way it can get in there, but, at night, I am keeping the coop door open, to warm to shut it.

are you close to Arizona? :D Bet you get warm there.

Diana..stop that right now you hear? No going to the hospital! Maybe, hopefully, they will come up with something for you. I've had this cough for two weeks tomorrow. Mine is taking it's time, but I don't have the problem you have with asthma! Let us know how you are doing!

I got my Polish eggs today. Nice sized eggs alright. Pleasantly surprised, I had forgotten, it's been a while since I hatched some. These will be quite different. She wrote a personal note in there explaining the marked eggs. She says the ones marked CP are fathered by a Crele Polish Rooster.
The ones marked BBP, are fathered by their Barred Buff Polish Rooster.
You can see more of her chicks if you want Lisa, just for fun.. :D on fb. Dancing Hen Farm, they are in Otis, Oregon.

Wendy, I agree, red shouldn't move to Antartica..those polar bears are mean! My son loves them, I don't. They eat people too Red. Thought you might want to know that.
Oh, and Wendy, you just had another pullet start laying? How many do you have laying now?

Whit...cute chicken. Sounds like things are going to work out for her. That's always a good thing. Better sooner than later.

Cynthia, Barred Buff are so cute! I love those. Will be fun to see what you get for sure. I will check out her site.

Here I willpost what I was posting on the Idaho thread.....I am watching my neighbors chickens this week and I had a funny idea. She has a Black Aust. looks exactly like mine, I really cannot tell them apart......went to get eggs today and hers lays HUGE eggs. i am sure you know what I am thinking......would it be so dang funny to switch them before she came home and see what she thinks of these little peanut eggs I have been getting from mine? haha that would be a pretty good prank. She might kill me. haha :p We have been calling mine the peanut M&M egger. stinker.

Cynthia, looked at that page, nice birds! She has tolbunt too. Resisting the urge to ask if she has eggs.....I think you sent me to that page then made private bets on whether I would do it lol! You would not do that now would ya?! I am on to you.

Red, sorry about your poor turkey. Your neighbor should have that dog on a leash, really.....kind of their responsibility. Don't feel bad, it was not your fault! Did you ever find that coon?

Lisa, nope on the coon. We're thinking we won't see it again until Autumn or Winter. There are too many juicy, fat rodents running around now. But I still have plans for a coon cap, don't doubt that. I don't know which neighbors own these dogs, but animal control came and got them and hauled them to the pound. When their owners come to collect them, they will be informed that they owe us for a turkey. Goodness gracious.

It's raining!! Woohoo!!!! I'm on my way out into the deluge in Tooele, so as long as I don't get nailed by any crazy drivers, it should be pleasant. I love thunderstorms.

Welcome, tjalred!

Welcome, tjalred! :frow

Way to go to let the owners know they need to pay attention!

Listen tho this.....my Delaware is looking boyish too.....Joybells hear that!? It is getting red....I checked them out at Birdguys, he had just a couple in the bunch that turned roo......compared to mine it is hard to say, he had some that were obvious boys, I would not call mine that at all. But mine is in the middle....not as light as some either, so time will tell :)

AND I had my marans backwards. I was sure one was a girl, and one was a boy, and they have traded places. One had the nice pulletish tail, one has no tail at all and is about two weeks behind the other one gettting the nice feathers. who would have known! The nice featherd out one is getting a tall red comb, wattles, looks just like the roo I picked up for Cindy. The girl is all yellow and totally not at all like the boy. Except the late feathering and teeny pom pom tail. It is so funny because Michelle warned me this might happen. She knew all along. Glad I kept them long enough to tell for sure! I would have given my girl away for free and been stuck with a roo.

Soooo I am getting up there in boys again. You know what that means :p
