Utah!

yeah red they sure were cute! so do any of you know much about the history of silkies? they are asian and their bones are used in medicine over there. i guess at one point they bred them to be extra broody because over there there is a popular dish that is very expensive that is eggs that are close to hatching taken and cooked up, so silkies are very useful because they are broody so much. its sad but it may help explain them a bit more to some of you

Poor little babies

It's amazing what they will do to baby birds

I read recently that because the silkies bones and meat are black that they have a TON of antioxidents like other dark foods such as blueberries. Couldn't make me eat one though. Can't stand the thought of putting black meat into my mouth and besides, how do you eat something that looks like a muppet?

Birdman, I knew they were bred to be really broody, but I didn't know why. It's kind of like balut in the Philippines. I don't think I could eat that

So one of the BR chicks is picking on the turkey poult
he.gif
I'm pretty sure that chick is a boy and he doesn't like the newcomer. I picked him up and gave him a stern talking to. Wish I knew it would work. For now, I shall call him Bully. I hope things improve as the turkey gets bigger. If I walk out there one morning and the poor thing has died of depression, I don't know what I'll do with myself.

Sundance, I had forgotten about those chicks you were hatching! Hmmmm.....the gal did write back, 202roosterlane is BYC username.....she said she has them and is going vaca til the 27th then can ship them. Can't decide. They are really cute, and I really want to hatch eggs haha. I keep saying no. I keep telling myself it is going to be cold out when they are ready for the run (8 weeks old in October they would be?!) and it will be a pain in the butt. But I really want to do it. And they are REALLY affordable right now in the off season.......I think there are plenty of people who would want to buy some.........sooooo.....Take a breath......I will sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

Cynthia, you have lots of fun stuff going! Too bad those showgirls are being so difficult. Hope the reamining babies make it. I will be excited to see chick pics soon then, always fun and there have not been very many on here lately. That is why I am deprived and thinking eggs again......argh!

Love the story about George! That is so heartwarming to think of someone who has raised beef cattle for years getting so attached to the little guy. It's wonderful the way animals can touch our lives and make living a little sweeter.

When my friend was growing up they always had a couple cows that they would raise every year for beef. She saddle broke one and used to ride it around like a horse. Rich kids with all the video games and fancy things in the world can't touch the kind of life that a farm kid has.

Loved the story about George, too, totally agree, it is so much better to kick the kids out and let them play and explore... just gotta convince DH that they don't need an MP3 player (my oldest just turned 7)

I made an inquiry on some mille fleur belgian d'uccle eggs today, waiting for a response......

I am secretly hoping they do not write back because it was a weak moment......
Red, glad you found a turkey! Hope it is a girlfriend for your boy.
Hattie when are your eggs due to hatch?
Cynthia when are yours due to hatch? I am having chick picture withdrawals.

Um, did you say mille fleur??? Oh dear

I should really not say anything at this point except make the print really small like Jill and ask for you to save me one or two...

Hey I posted that I have 12 Mille fleur Duncle eggs in my bator so I hope they don't answer because I am going to share the babies with everyone. Still in Hospital. Glad they have wifi

I can feel the self-control vanishing And Sundance, sorry to hear you are still in the hospital... you must have been a lot sicker than you were saying, cuzz that's a decent stay...

Ok, found out that Austin will be in Peach City area for a while. So, not in the big city. And, part of his mission goes into AL. It will be interesting to see where they move him around. I wouldn't care if he never made it to the big city. :)
Hmm, wondering if I should pre warn him about those big bugs! I lived in Florida, right close there...I used to tell him about those roaches. Turn on a light after you've been gone for a while, and watch the room move if the house and around the outside of the house hadn't been sprayed in a while.
He's seen some pretty cool looking bugs while we were in Mexico. :) Something on his list to take....mosquito repellent. Yep.

DH lived there for a while, too and his twin sister has lived in Huntsville, AL for several years... boy it is sure pretty in the South... still USA but in a way a whole different place... CONGRATS to your son!!

Sheesh!! How big are turkey poults?? HAve never combined poultry types before, but will it get big fast enough that the silly BR won't pic on it anymore??

And Bluejems... VERY cool coop pic... got the wheels in my head turning=)

when I get out of hospital I am going to candle them and see how they look. They are Tiny tiny eggs,

Yes, the D'Uccle eggs are very small..I have hatched both the Millies, and the Porcelain..imagine that??? ! LOL
I decided not to keep them, very small bird, very flighty, not very friendly. My leghorns are more friendly. Sorry Lisa..but that's what I found.

Maybe you will get them to be friendly. Those Porcelain sure are pretty though, kept a couple of those for a while because I loved the color.

I told my son that he is going to be right in the Bible belt. Will be interesting for sure, since there are more Baptists there than any other religion...looked it up. In fact, when we lived in VA...we were Baptists. :)) I also lived in Florida..then moved to VA. Then, made the move all the way across the country to good ol Utah, not in a covered wagon, but made the treck in a Greyhound Bus.

Thanks for the info, it is good to hear your experience with them! I have been checking different breeders for temperament and coloring. I think I found the one i want if i do it......still on the fence! I really do not want any more banty size, but I do love this color so I thought I would make an exception, and the breed got high marks.....so I better make up my mind lol

My DH lived in the bible belt for awhile, it will DEFinitely be a bit of a culture shock for your boy eh? But it will likely make him appreciate home a lot more. When does he leave?

Just wondering. At what point can i put my chicks in with my chickens? Right now i have them in a wire dog crate next to the coop during the day. Then they go back to their tub at night. Anyhting thing else i should do? Any help would be great.

Thanks
