Utah!

I have some beautiful rainbow swiss chard growing in one of my flower planters. I thought it was too pretty to keep in the garden.

Whittni, love the banner.

Red, like that egg, it seems like a nice size.

Have you guys SEEN how big a cow's neck gets? I couldn't possibly have a collar on him for long. I think I'll consider the cows super cute now, but lose interest by the time they're big enough to eat. Besides, they're steers, so good for nothing but eating. And, if anyone was going to make the Christmas card, it'd be the chickens, but they haven't made it so far.

Oh man I love the look on her face! That's just priceless

Sorry for the double post, but I put up a thread on the Gender or Breed forum on some chicks I got from Lisa. Feel free to jump in!

Also, I can't figure out if my Marans is laying different eggs depending on her mood, or if I may have a new layer. Here's the egg I found in the box yesterday:

It's medium to small-sized, beige, and the top has a bit of that wrinkling effect going on. Usually my Marans lays eggs that have more of a torpedo shape, but she has been known to lay ones that are smaller when it's really hot. I have a GLW in the same pen that is about 21 weeks old, give or take a bit. There's also a BO who's about 17 weeks old now. The BO's face isn't as red as the Marans, but it's a dark pink, verging on red on some parts. The GLW looks more red than the BO. What do you guys think?

And just for fun, here's a picture of Serah giving me the stink eye while Uncle Scot cuddles her

"Do you realize what I put up with? Do you SEE this?"

(she really does like my brother)

She is saying really!!! Really!!! You are going to put that thing in my face? Really. She kind of looks like a hawk?

Just got on to see a beautiful new egg..that egg looks the exact same color as my buff orpingtons'.  Only she has been laying tiny eggs, except one day this past week, she laid one about that size.  Nice size red.

Kimmy..small eggs for  a while with the pullets starting..never know when they will get bigger.  With a lot of mine, I just all of a sudden notice I am getting bigger eggs, because they grow gradually.

Yep Red..go for it..Cal Ranch!  How fun would that be to work with those babies.  Do you know what department they would need you in?

Birdman..a question.  I grew some swiss chard this year for my chickens.  They don't like it. So, I have been looking up recipes on how to cook it..looks like most are done with the oil and frying pan.  I used some olive oil, and stir fried it.  It tasted it like spinach.  We liked it.  Ok, so now the question.  When I picked it, I picked it about half way down the stalk, which, some are pretty high.  Is that where you pick it? If I remember correctly, you said something about them growing back.  Soo, I'm thinking maybe I should pick it further down?  Sure is pretty.   :)  Before the frying pan.  lol...
i do the same as red, just cut it a inch or so to the ground. do not harvest all the leaves at once, just take a few from each plant, i normally do the outer ones first. for my chickens i just pick a few and toss it in the run whole, they go crazy for it. then in the fall i put a heavy mulch layer around the plants such as leaves that fall in the fall or straw and they survived the winter. not a surprise it tastes like spinach, its in the same family as it :) i eat it fresh too :) i do not know what my spr is doing, its like she is broody but not broody, i am not even getting eggs from her now. if this is her being broody i hate to think what kind of mom she would be!

Sundancen, YAY!

Babies! And yes, that hen has always looked kind of hawk-ish. Even her profile. She's a very pretty girl, but so jumpy around people. That's part of why my brother always grabs her and holds her. I asked him to

Lisa, have fun!

Birdman, that's weird. Maybe she's just on strike? She's not eggbound or something, is she? I hope she's just being fussy

Well, I consolidated some of my chicks last night. I put the two Icee cockerels in with the little group of pullets that the female Icee is with, since they're about the same size. If they can't work out a pecking order in the next day or two, I think I'll have to move the cockerels to Tooele. And, yesterday I had one of the older pullets come up to the little baby BR's and the turkey poult. The BR's didn't know what to think of someone who was at least four times their size, but that turkey puffed right up and got in her face. She wasn't sure what to think of that! He got in her face, too, but she walloped him. Poor little guy. I thought it was funny that he was so spunky about protecting "their" spot, though.

I haven't had any luck with my KSL ad, no one here wants a BLRW cockerel? He's pretty and from corvidae so not hatchery stock. Free!
