Utah!

Lisa, love that little family. They're so cute. Congrats on new grandbabies! Girls are much funner to shop for, in my opinion. As to the BLRW, Sundance has another of Rebecca's BLRW, and she's over a year old and hasn't ever laid, so maybe they're not so good with laying. How are you holding up with your son gone?

Welcome to BYC, jedage13in2012

Wgidir, congrats on placing your silkie. Sounds like a great place for him.

Kidasoto, congrats on the new layer!!!!

Whoa, 250 free chickens?!

Birdman, I was annoyed they didn't pick the cougar for the mascot. When I was scambaiting someone a couple months ago, I had a pet cougar. If you want to read the email exchange, it's in my notes on facebook.

Sasha, that is really cool. I think your house/barn/land sounds so neat.

Sasha, that is so neat that you find those things..I love old things like that. I love history, and old pictures of how our towns looked here in Utah a while back..waay back. When the trains ran down the middle of main street in almost all of the big cities. I have to wonder, why so much grit was needed..maybe he had the chickens in a giant run? Generally, if they are free ranging, they don't need it. I only give my chickens grit when they are stuck in the run in the winter, and that's only if they've had some food from indoors. The mash goes down easy enough. :)
Check that bag out! No paper bags for the big stuff back then.
And check out those shoes! And what looks to be a type of boot! Wow, they had similar shoes as us back then.

Headin for bed...I'm tired, and I don't think I did that much today..oh yes I did, I went shopping..and to the library, and I fed and watered my chickens, and I got two more babies placed, and I sold a table and some pillows, and I had fun on here being silly once again. What you must think of me. Oh well.

Welcome, Jed! A fellow West Valley-ite.

Kidasoto, congrats on another new layer! That RIR looks proud of herself.

So..........am I the only one who doesn't have any new girls laying, at the moment?

Sasha, didn't you say you're still waiting on some? The only layer I have right now is my Marans, and she's over 2 years old. And she's not even where I am. Awwww poo.

Quote: I haven't but Steve in Lehi had them when I was there last year, and was hatching lots of different kinds of eggs. They are interesting but noisey.
Quote: So fun for kids to watch the progress candleing! (And adults) I was tickled when I first saw something move in there!
Quote: You don't want feed store chickens if you're to your limit - you want the ones you can't live without, the ones you'd almost give up your sweties for... Congrats on the grandbabies!! What a beautiful family.
Quote: The Utah Fancy Poultry Association has two shows per year in Farmington. They have a website and I think it has county fair schedules on it. The American Poultry Association (APA) also has a website with show schedules. And Welcome!
Quote: Have a great vacation! Will your daughter be close?
Quote: Welcome!

Yay layers!!
Quote: It depends on the market, goes up and down. I've paid 28 per 100 lbs for layer mash, 29.50 for grower, and 22 I think for scratch. I take five garbage cans, it ends up being 600-800 lbs so its worth the drive. I think its not "certified organic" but they don't add anything non-organic to the grains and they are fresh ground. It has no animal by-products, but I don't know if they buy their grains from an organic source that has no fertilizer or pesticides.
Quote: Sweet dreams! Don't let the bed bugs bite! What a pretty, big egg!!
Edited to show correct prices for Leland - went there today... I was thinking 50# bags - can't do anything from memory anymore! Sorry.

LOL, Cynthia, I love you to pieces, too! Thank you guys for making my day brighter. :) All of you!

Grandpa kept his chickens inside 2 huge chicken coops all winter, thus all the grit. I think he free ranged them in the pasture during the summer, because the cows were in a different pasture they owned the next block up the street.
I'm totally in to old stuff/history, too. Most of my neighbors have been here forever, and I love the stories they tell me about my grandparents/great grandparents, aunts and uncles. So cool.
As for the shoes...was Nike a brand way back when? LOL The cowgirl boots my daughter was wearing sure were. ;)

Yes, I'm still waiting. Hedwig is the only good girl of laying age in my flock at the moment. The Wyandottes are becoming increasingly annoying, with their red faces and their pretty wattles and combs and their nice round, fluffy bottoms. *sigh* I believe they are at 25 weeks now.
On a happier note, Hedwig's egg today was more aqua than green. Maybe she's on the right track for a nice blue egg!?

Sphinx you guys are quite the hiker! Have lots of fun and be careful. Hey I should have had you stay at my place. Then you could have taken care of my chickens! I know just what you wanted to do right.

Whittini when I get back you can come take a look at my chicks and pic what you want. They're free! Maybe next Monday?

Lisa cute grandbaby and parents! It's the best being a grandma.

Sasha fun stuff you are finding under very old hay. That cat better stay far away from those little Polish! :) That reminds me my DH and I finally got the bird netting up around the outside of our coop. The chickens will be safer now. The little chicks make so much noise I was fearing the hawk would be back and hear the chick noises and have a hay day having a 6 piece meal.:(

Moriah my daughter is going to Idaho for college. That's where we lived before we moved to Utah. She will have old friends there for her to see again. She will be a 10 hour drive from us. :(

This may be a silly question, but I really don't know. How do you transport a garbage can filled with feed? Do you have to use a dolly or something to get it from the vehicle to where you store your food? I only have a mini van so I'm not sure I could do it, but I could buy a few bags of feed and fill up a garbage can that is stationary. Also, where do all of you store your feed? Outside? By the coop? In a basement/garage?

I bought a couple of those outside storage boxes. I put the feed in old litter buckets that seal and put them inside the storage box next to the coop. It also snaps shut and is a tight water proof seal.
