Utah!

14-16 bucks for 100 pounds?? Sheesh I should come down there too. I am paying 20 for 50 pounds of 20% protein mash at the Logan IFA south feed mill. Too much. Slvrphoenix said that Walton's here sells it for $10 but they are only open weekdays when I am working so I have never made it out there.

Cynthia, I am loving this one here ...
700
haha!
That little guy fits how I am feeling 90 percent of the time, dazed and confused lol!

Hattie which school is your daughter going to?

Blujems how is that goat doing? ok I hope?

Sphinx, I am hanging in there with him gone....BUT I am going to drive you guys crazy this week  I have lots of stuff going in the evenings, that will help, 1 baby shower, 2 weddings, 3 if I count the one on Saturday in Idaho....and DH works every night this week so I am going to get some gardening/canning done, my squash peppers and tomatoes have gone crazy. I miss my kiddo pretty bad though. :(

This may be a silly question, but I really don't know. How do you transport a garbage can filled with feed? Do you have to use a dolly or something to get it from the vehicle to where you store your food? I only have a mini van so I'm not sure I could do it, but I could buy a few bags of feed and fill up a garbage can that is stationary. Also, where do all of you store your feed? Outside? By the coop? In a basement/garage?

Kim, I was totally laying in bed last thinking...hey..I forgot to answer Kimmies question about Leland Mills!
We take garbage cans, you know, the metal kind, that the mice can't chew through, and then, you get on a scale with your whole vehicle. They weigh you in, then weigh you out with the can full. I use a real big can, great at telling measurements ey?? But, you can use whatever size you want of course. I store my cans in a shed I have for my chicken "stuff." I will get pictures later, it's dark in there, but maybe you will be able to see. I will open the lids and tell you what's what. I do use the pellets along with the mash from Leland Mills. I get bags of that from Cal Ranch because they don't sell pellets at the Mills..Anyway, like I said, will take pictures later of all of my cans. I put the oyster shell in plastic because mice don't care for that..also the DE..plastic bins.

The Utah Fancy Poultry Association has two shows per year in Farmington. They have a website and I think it has county fair schedules on it. The American Poultry Association (APA) also has a website with show schedules. And Welcome!
Have a great vacation! Will your daughter be close?
Welcome!
Thanks much, will check it out :)

We don't have a shed so it's either the garage our on the side of the house. I was just wondering if the heat/cold would degrade the food at all. I'm about out of my food from Cal Ranch and I need some more food...I'm not sure I'm willing to drive to Spanish Fork though. Google maps puts it as 57 minutes and that is without construction traffic. I have the DE in a plastic bucket from Home Depot, I figured nothing would want to chew through and get that stuff. :) Although only a small portion of the bag I bought fits into the bucket so the rest is in the bag in the garage, the bucket just makes it easier to transport out to the coop/run.

Now I have some DE questions. How long should it take before I see a reduction in flies? How often should I go out there and dust? I did it last night around the areas they dust bathe in and on the roosts/poop boards and I did the same this morning. I still need to get out there and get the coop all cleaned out.

What do you do with the used bedding? I was thinking I could just put it on the run floor? I've been throwing it away but that seems so wasteful. We don't have a compost bin but will be getting one. Even then though, can I just put all the pine shavings in there? That seems like it would be a little overwhelming to compost.

We have 3, maybe 4 layers out in the coop. I wish I could tell who the 3rd/4th layer is! It's either the buff orpington or the barred rock. Yesterday my daughter brought in a really light egg and she swears its from the BO because she checked the boxes and there were no eggs, then Princess (BO) went in there and when she checked again there was this light egg.

Cynthia, Checkers is doing well. She still mostly hangs out in the coop by herself, but she is better accepted by the others now. She will run around with them outside and stuff. So yay! She seems integrated and you said she always was kind of a loner so I'm thinking she's as friendly with the others as she's going to get. :)

Kimmy, I've got my feed inside one of those large plastic garbage cans with a lid. It sits outside in the shade by our garden shed, though at some point, I'd like to build a coop that has a small anteroom where I can store the food buckets. I'm all for keeping feed out of the weather as much as possible, since I worry that rain/wet weather would cause feed to mold and rot, and direct sunlight could cause it to lose some of the nutritional value. I like Cynthia's suggestion of metal cans to keep the vermin out, too. If I had one, I'd use it, but for now it's in the plastic garbage can.

Sasha, glad I'm not alone! My RIR must be a procrastinator. I thought they were supposed to be good layers? Maybe I'm thinking of the RSL when it comes to early laying?

Here are the pictures inside of my shed. Looks like I will be going to Leland Mills in about 3 weeks..it's just below half on the mash here.

Well then, I have tried a few times now to upload pictures, and it isn't working today. I tried somewhere else with one of the smiley's..didn't work..anyone else?
I was going to post those pictures of my cans in the shed. I hope this is just a little glinch here, and not my computer..someone try and post something..picture...

I guess I can keep the feed in the garage. We are not big on sheds, they give us the heebie jeebies with spiders and such. :) Plus, we try to keep purging stuff so we don't have need of a shed! LOL I don't think I can justify driving an hour to get feed, but I think my neighbor with chickens gets hers there so maybe I can have her pick some up for me. They have property with something like 100 chickens so they go through a lot of feed.
