Sphinx, that's awful. And haven't you had some birds exposed to the "sick" hens longer than others, without them being ill? Is there something in the coop or where they run around in the yard that they could be getting into? Although, I would say that if this is happening at two week intervals, it could still be some kind of sickness. I think you've already posted something about this to the sickness and injuries section, haven't you?

Hi everyone, just popped in to say Hi and to see if anyone wanted my extra hen?

I have a white, silkie mix hen that I don't need, or want. She's mixed with silkie since she has a crest, feathered legs, a semi-beard, and 5 toes. But she has smooth feathers. Her skin is black like a silkie. She was mated with a lot at her previous home where she was kept in horrible conditions and her back feathers are just starting to grow back in. She is no more than a year and a half old. I remember the day she was born at her previous home. She lays small white eggs and is very fast at laying. Today she surprisingly laid her egg in about 7 minutes! She's very, very smart and likes to free range. Very quiet and keeps to herself. I just don't want her and don't need her. She's $7 if anyone wants to PM me or call me...Cynthia knows my #. I'm not going to be on until tomorrow afternoon so you can call me later tonight but I go to bed at 9. Thanks!

Red, Yeah, I posted in the disease section. My polish boy is in Run B, and he was found sick/injured on 7/27. He made a fast recovery after getting the shot, and was never exposed to the chickens in Run A.

The chickens in Run A are in my older run, where I've had chickens for 3 years with no disease til now. Lavender am. got sick on 8/8 or so. I removed her immediately after realizing she was sick. So, the patridge hasn't been near the lavender for 2.5 weeks, and just started showing signs of illness yesterday. Everyone else seems fine.

Cooking oil.

Some people like to use the spraying can, but I use the liquid, scoop it up into my hand, and douse the areas. The cooking spray does do a real good job getting the legs and feet if they get leg mites. Thank goodness I haven't had that problem.
I do all around the chicken..vent of course. Side of vent, and up into the top just above the tail, and then beside the wings, on the back of the neck, and the chest. Really gets them fast. They don't have anywhere to go. The oil isn't hurting them on the skin. In fact, after a DE treatment, and I have to go ahead and do this, I can see how dry their skin is. I just tell them they are getting a nice little oil treatment for their dry skin.

Shinx, check your Rock out for mites...you probably already have, but you would be surprised, at how much they can take out of a chicken. Maybe it's something like that, just a coincidence that she is not doing well, and it isn't the same thing? Those mites can multiply quick, and I'm finding that DE just doesn't do the trick every time. Just a thought? Good Luck!

Here's an intersting link. So many people go out and buy the expensive oil, or anything, that they hear about. I have heard of the coconut oil, neem, peanut oil..I have oil in my kitchen, and it works great.

I hate to sound like a total idiot, but how do I check for mites? I do sprinkle DE liberally around the coop and run. Out of curiosity, were the lavenders or the partridge vaccinated for mareks?

thanks for all the help on my hurt hen. she is doing ok. I think the meany is 1 of my bo or 1 of my ee. once she heals i might just throw the lot of them in the grow out pen for a month and see what that does to the pecking order. the 2 ee's are at the top and the 2 bo are moving up the chain fast. her little friend the slw didn't want to go into the coop tonight and keep circling her pen. i would put her in with her but i don't know were she is in the pecking order i i don't want her tore up to. this is the first rir hen that i have had that has been the lowest in order, even my bantam red will stand two to two with her.

Sphinx, I really recommend wearing gloves when you check, just to cut down on the creepy crawlies. Part the feathers on the chicken and check the skin for little specks that move. Sometimes they're white, sometimes yellow, sometimes red. I'm sure they can be other colors, too. They like to hang out the most under the wings and around the vent area.

If it's not mites, do you have anything in the run that they could be eating that might be making them sick? Insulation, peeling paint, rotting wood?

Cedar makes them sick? Could it be that? Also with marek's, the most common symptom is nerve damage on one side that makes them droop on one side or limp, if they look off balance that could be it. I hope that is not it.!

Couldit be worms? Cayenne pepper would cure that... a few T in their feed.... you could do a poop check.

I sure hope you can figure it out so that the other girls are ok Sphinx.

Nope, no paint, rotting wood, nothing like that. I use pine shavings, not cedar.

I'll grab some latex gloves and search for creepy crawlies tomorrow.

The thing that has me confused is the gap. I would think that they'd all be dropping like flies in short order, not waiting two weeks between illnesses. I'm also thinking that maybe the polish is just a weird coincidence, especially since he's never been exposed to the other two birds.
