Daloorashens, has your black girl from pawtraitart laid yet? I got an egg from one of them yesterday. The Marans/Wheaten Am. mix. Nice little olive egg, good color, decent size for a first egg. I was thinking yours looked ahead of mine with the comb being a titch more red. Exciting. One more to lay, she was just squatting last week, about two weeks behind the other one. She is the Marans/Silver Ameraucana mix, has more silver through the neck, same as yours.

I sold my BA today! A guy from Wyoming is coming over to Logan on 9/25 to pick her up. He had to go to Lewiston to drop pigs off. He asked if there are any more POL age pullets for sale. LF. He wants a few more. Opportunity knocks if anyone around here has any for sale....

I have the hardest time when I sell a chicken. I change my mind a little and feel guilty and go through a little emotional outburst :/ I have nearly half black chickens though, and I really do not want to part with the FBCM or the olive eggers, so the BA was the obvious choice, her eggs are still small size. Getting bigger for sure, but not like some of the others. Hear me justifying selling one? I feel like such a guilty chicken mom But he bought her for $15....that makes it a little easier Oh and she screams at me if I open the egg door when she is in there, it kinda ticks me off...

guess I just need so many chickens that I won't be able to get attached. Now there's an idea.

That idea does not work lol The more I get the more I love each one! I kept thinking I would have extras to pick and choose which ones to keep, but it is starting to feel like chicken hoarding around here, I just love all of them. Last year I had so many mean ones. This year no mean ones at all...I assumed more would act up but they are making it hard for me to decide who stays.

Lisa, auntie, I hear you! I have a lot of pullets that will start laying within the next month or two. By now, I'm usually looking at my older laying girls thinking, ok, you can go, and/or you can go. But it's hard this year. I want to keep them all. I thought that I would want to get rid of the NH, because she just hasn't been that sociable..with me. They have to love me don't ya know. Well, guess who is sneaking up to me and coming around me more and more now? Oh well, will see what happens when the others start laying I guess. Poor girls, are still being kept in the run. I just don't trust that hawk!

Jill..I called Ideal last night, went straight to message, but they are always good to call back. They called this morning and asked if I could e-mail a picture of the bantams so they could see what they sent. I'm sure they want to make sure I know what I'm talking about too. I left a quick message on how they are looking. The brown wings, the curled feathers. So, I will get some pics sent off to them, and they will either call me, or e-mail me back. I know those aren't birchens! Sorry.

I know, Sundance is a really awesome lady. I feel lucky to know her (and the rest of you, for that matter!) Red, I'm so sorry the dog got your EE. That is so heartbreaking. I call that nobody else is allowed a loss for at least 6 months- we've had a terrible run as a group lately, haven't we? I'm a little worried that both of my chicks are boys- they are almost two weeks old now, and no tail on either of them. When I feather sexed, both were girls, but that wyandotte mix seems so big and boyish. My day actually did get a lot better. Everyone but dh had to go to the dentist (actually, he was scheduled too, but then he got called out of town this week and had to cancel). I know that's usually not the start to a good day, but all five of us had no cavities. My dentist usually has the hygenists do the cleanings, but for whatever reason, he cleaned mine. They said it was to keep him in practice. He said I did a really great job on keeping my teeth clean, and I was out of the chair within 15 minutes, which was awesome. He also checked my xrays first off and declared me cavity free, so my anxiety about cavities was gone immediately. I have teeth/mouth fear issues, so it was a really nice change of pace to not have to fret the whole visit. Then I got a hot cookie and ice cream later, so I'm feeling more cheerful. Even though I can't get dh's air compressor to work to air up my tires to where I want, and I wanted to throw a fit.

K so I have way sad terrible news my lab got my two week old barred plymouth rock! it was soooo very sad!!!! I wanted to be so made at her(my dog) but from the looks of the baby it just looked like mocha(my dog) was playing with it I felt soooo terrible I let it happen!!! I was having a primary meeting and put the babies in a fenced area and they somehow got out thank heavens the other two escaped without a scratch........but I'm worried that they got traumatized! Should I do anything special for them? Sorry I added to the losses but hopefully that's it!!! My new babies seem to be doing well fingers crossed!!

Oh, poor chickie! Bird dogs have very soft mouths, but chickens are awfully delicate, and even playing can hurt them. I wouldn't be mad at your dog, but you may need to bolster your fencing. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Cynthia, I'll be interested to hear what Ideal has to say when you send pictures.

Lisa, that seems like a great price for a chicken, congrats. You'll feel better about it soon.

I called the vet this morning, and they just took me at my word that the calf has pinkeye, and had me come in and get two syringes of an antibiotic to give him, 48 hours apart. I'm deeply unsettled by the level of competence they determined I have.


I'm now staring at the syringes, trying to decide if I need an assistant or not.

Hi everyone! I wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I've been puttering around BYC for a couple of weeks now and finally joined the forum. I'm Andrea and I live with my husband and almost two-year-old son in West Jordan. We don't have chickens, yet but are starting to plot our coop and as soon as it's done we'll get our chickens! It's good that we aren't ready, yet because I'm still researching and deciding on breeds. I have a friend who has chickens, I'm not sure if she's on BYC, but she mentioned looking for a fairly weather hardy breed. Are there any specific breeds you recommend for or against?

welcome! i myself like the black sex links, you will know the sex so you do not have any surprise crowing, most mine are super sweet, one even demands kisses at night lol, they lay huge brown eggs and mine do great in utah weather. i also like easter eggers, they lay colored eggs, mostly green ones, they do not lay as much as a sex link or leghorn but they are a lot of fun and are so beautiful and they have puffy cheeks. leghorns are good, they do not take as much feed to make an egg and are as about as good of a layer as you can get but they can be flighty. buff orpingtons are fun but they do go broody now and then but any chicken may do it, they are just more known for it. cynthia here is always hatching out good chicks, i have two from her and they are great!

Glad you decided to join us. How exciting to be starting off on your own chicken adventure! I really would recommend Barred Rocks, personally. They are good layers, sweet and mellow, and they tend to be pretty hardy. I also had a Cuckoo Marans up until recently who was quite the tough girl. Depending on what type of weather you want them to be okay in, there's plenty to choose from. I tend to go for the cold weather breeds, just because I like the cold.

Sphinx, just do it. Don't think about it too much. I always hesitate too long if I think about it, and then it's worse. And don't give up on your chicks yet! I was sure that one of my Wyandottes was a boy until she was at least a few months old. Then Lisa kindly pointed out that it was a pullet, heh

Also, love the screaming-on-fire guy. I need that.

UrbanCM, so sorry you lost a baby! Sometimes they do slip out like that, and it's hard to figure out how. My brother's husky has gotten a few of my chicks before, and we thought at first that he was just playing with them and didn't know any better. However, after I saw him stalking them behind the fence the other day, I'm convinced that it's just some of his wolf tendencies coming out. Bad dog.

Hattie, I'll keep that in mind about the string cheese. We found out they like cooked rice, too. My brother cooked some up yesterday specifically for the chickens (spoiled brats) and the two Icelandics stuffed themselves silly. They just about couldn't even walk when we put them away for the night, haha.

Cynthia, fun that you got to meet sundance! Love the picture of you two. And I'll be interested to hear what IP says about those Cochins. They definitely had brown on their wings when I saw them!

Forgot to say that we got three eggs yesterday! Woohoo! The only problem is, one of them didn't look like it belonged to the RIR, BSL, or BO. Could we have another new layer? Hmmmm................And that BSL sure put up a fuss yesterday when she went to use the nest and the BO was in "her" spot. Funniest thing every to hear. The BSL never sings the egg song - unless she's complaining, it seems. She has the shrillest, most uneven song I have ever heard.

If they are frizzled I want them if they look pullet I love frizzle anything. The Turkin is doing great. I I was worried about her because I was at the vet all day did not get home until 630 I put her in the brooder with the little EE that I kept because it wasn't doing so well. The Turkin is 3x bigger but they are friends now. The little EE is walking better and I have seen it eating and drinking, so I think it is going to be ok. I have 3 tiny quail in with them and its funny the little quail keep crawling under the turkin like she is their mom. She is very tolerant and is getting along great with all
