Utah!

Hi everyone! I wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I've been puttering around BYC for a couple of weeks now and finally joined the forum. I'm Andrea and I live with my husband and almost two-year-old son in West Jordan. We don't have chickens, yet but are starting to plot our coop and as soon as it's done we'll get our chickens! It's good that we aren't ready, yet because I'm still researching and deciding on breeds. I have a friend who has chickens, I'm not sure if she's on BYC, but she mentioned looking for a fairly weather hardy breed. Are there any specific breeds you recommend for or against?

Hey your close to me welcome. I will have a small coop for sale in a few weeks. I am in the process of building a new coop for myself. Do you want pets egg layers or both? Almost everyone likes silkies for their gentle loving nature. The eggs aren't huge but we just eat two. I bought one of everything until I decided what I like. I like odd looking chickens so Of course the Turkins are great. They are winter hardy even with the bare skin. They also lay longer than most . The Wyandotts are very pretty with the lacing the Rocks lay well You will enjoy your journey I am sure

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I've been researching breeds and I'm really eying either Orpingtons or Australorps. I'll admit, I'm really only leaning towards the Orpingtons because I want lavendar ones. Which means I think I may go with Australorps. Or maybe a mix of both because I'm indecisive! :)

the-bird-man - What is Cynthia's username? I'll start by contacting her! :)

sundancebare - I would love to see pictures of your coop! Although I will be honest, I think that building the coop is half the reason my husband is on board. :D

its cynthia12 i think, she is a regular poster on this thread, she posted on the last page and will post again soon too. she has a incubator and uses it often lol. she hatches out many different breeds, by geting hatching eggs and setting them. others here hatch too, any member on this thread would be a good place to buy chicks and many here are very good at sexing them too :)

Hey guys, been lurking these past several days again... I'm sure I've missed a lot of excitement and I'm sorry I can't comment on it all...

I do remember something about someone with a respiratory disease, and Cynthia saying something about having a problem a while back, so I'm not curious, Cynthia, what you think your girls had and what happened to them...

Welcome to all the new people and on the previous note, the person that was asking about it, how are your chickens doing, have they gotten sick, too??

Nothing new on my homefront... working on the coop expansion at my mom's, it's slow going because I can only go over 2-3x's/wk and work on it in the mornings, but it is going actually faster than we thought... we should be able to start putting up the walls for the pens soon and reinforcing the existing walls and roof, YAY!!

Hi ara!
welcome-byc.gif

If you stay with us, we'll go right ahead and get ya hooked. We love our chickens. I love all kinds of chickens, and I have loved hatching the different breeds. Like bird man and sundance said, it's according to what you are looking for. I love the leghorn for eggs, the sexlink also for eggs, and now, I'm seeing that my New Hampshire is a great layer. I have an Ameracauna that lays almost every day, so she's good.

I have sold all of my Nacked Necks, which are excellent layers, and I sold the two little bantams that I am asking Ideal about. I sent the pictures of them. I kept the most frizzled one. Thought, oh well, not what I wanted, but she sure is cute.

Right now, I have Swedish Flower eggs in. ara..read up on them. I'm excited about them. They sound like they are excellent layers, do very well in the weather here, and, the fun part, they come in an array of colors. Just fun.
The eggs I have in now are due to hatch in a couple of weeks. The eggs are a very nice size, and are either a cream color or a brown color of egg. Did I say nice size??!

Shinx, you can do it!! If you already haven't. Let us know how it went!

Brad, just got a call from a gal that thinks her pencil is going broody. I told her I thought you had said yours did? I also have heard from the other gal that has several of them, and she says all of the hens have gone broody on her. So early after just starting to lay? Wow, didn't know that the rocks did that!

A couple of years ago I had a leghorn get upper respiratory and get real sick. She went down real quick. She had the whole wheezing and snotty nose, for lack of a better description..anyway, some of the others got sick. I hurried and found out what to do. Bought the anti-biotic for them that was suggested on here, and did what was suggested on the bag. You can't eat the eggs while they are being treated, and from what I heard from others on here, the main reason being that you could be allergic to the anti-biotic. Pen. is what was in that stuff I used, and yes, I'm allergic! You have to wait a certain amount of time to eat the eggs after treating. Then, everyone started talking about Denagard. Well, I had a flare up in my flock about 7 months later, used that, and it worked so much faster. So now, I keep it on hand, and I use it in the spring and the fall as a preventative. You can eat the eggs while they are on it. Look it up on here. A lot of good comments on it. I swear by it.

I am also wanting an expansion onto my smaller coop. :D

Welcome aravis!

My favorites so far are the French Black Copper Marans for chocolatey dark brown eggs. And Ameraucana's for the blue (usually!) eggs.

Then theres the olive eggers, the Polish for the amazingly funny fluffy heads....oh here I go....then the Showgirls (turken/silkie mix), so cute..and by far the most "not-scared-of-people-at-all-thinks-she-is-a-human". The best layers I have had are the Golden Sex Links, big eggs every day. But not as exciting looking as some of the others. My barred Rock is the sweetest and smartest, and is an excellent layer-- I will always have one of those in my flock. Just one though... I have to love the cool colored egg layers a little more :)

Actually I just love them all. :p :D

Sphinx, did ya do it and how did it go? Were ya shakin' in yer boots!?

mine has gone broody twice so far, she was fairly easy to break of it, only lasting a week each time. yeah these are very broody girls :)

Welcome Aravis! My favorite breeds are the silver laced or gold laced wyandottes, Easter Eggers, or my black copper marans. My favorite chicken currently is an "Olive Egger"- she's a lavender ameraucana/black copper marans cross. The only chicken I've ever had go broody was a black copper marans though.

Oh my gosh you guys, the cow injection was quite the adventure. I'm glad there weren't witnesses. Those syringes were huge and scary (see my facebook page for a picture).

I took a few minutes to collect myself (ok, an hour), and I head out there armed with my pink mucking boots, a squirting water bottle, and a syringe.

TBone sees me and comes running. The fact that I'm holding a water bottle compounds the problem. He's convinced this bottle is for him and keeps trying to drink from it. Meanwhile, Casanova thinks me squirting water in his eye is a terrible idea, and he doesn't like the look of that needle either, so he's trying to make a run for it.

All this commotion got the attention of the other cows (steers) so they moseyed on over to watch everything.

This all ended with a cleansed eye (no sweeping under the eyelid though) and a cracked syringe, and no shot given. I decided it was insane to think I could do this alone. Even the smallest of the steers weighs more than me.

When dh got home, I asked him to help me. I got the bright idea that I should bring some of the calf grain into the field as a peace offering to Casinova.

Well, the grain got the attention of Baby, the horse. She wanted some of that. Badly. So she's chasing me around the field, trying to get her nose in the bucket. I know she's on a very strict diet, and I'm fairly certain that diet doesn't involve calf starter, but it was looking like she was going to win that battle. I sneakily gave the bucket to dh, and Baby continued to follow me. When dh was mostly to the "time out corral", she noticed HE had the bucket, and took off at a gallop to get to him. He got there first and was home free! I felt very lucky that only TBone and Casanova had noticed I was back with the white bottle and the bucket of grain.

Eventually, I was able to give the injection, and I irrigated the eye a bit more. I brought a rubber glove so I could try to sweep under the eyelid, but I lost my nerve. I did try to peek and didn't see anything though. After that syringe was empty, I put the contents of the cracked syringe in the intact one, so that dose is ready to go.

We get to repeat the antibiotics shot on Saturday. Whee!!

Spinx... pink shoes, gloves, no goggles? Man, you should have had your DH have the camera on hand, but it sounds like hand were full! Cute true story!

Going to fb to check out things..maybe there's a pic of you in your pink boots.
