i noticed a lot of you have silkies. when did they start to lay? i have 3 hens and 1 easter egger bantam hen that hasn't started to lay and they are going on 24 weeks. Do bantams take a little longer? My 2 bantam roosters have been mature for six weeks now. (yes i have fertile eggs from my large hens)

OH YA!!! this spring i gave a friend some eggs and he hatched only 1 chick from them (his coop was made for eggs not broodeis). last week he decided he didn't want to raise chickens and gave me a couple of his pullets. I got 1 barred rock and the easter egger from my flock. what do you all think? isnt she nice looking! the rooster and hen both came from blue eggs so im keeping my fingers crossed. 3-4 weeks on the count down.

i use pumpkin seeds to worm mine, its all natural and with so many people carving pumpkins its easy to get seeds. i also feed them pumpkins that people decorate with, after Halloween so many people throw them away so i offer to get rid of them and it makes people very happy. pumpkins are a major source of feed for my girls at this time of year. also stores will clearance them for super cheap on or soon after halloween. my understanding with the apple cider vinegar is it has to be the natural kind because others they take the good stuff out of it. also with the vinegar you cant use a metal waterer with it.

great info on the pumpkin seeds bird man,,,is it ok to use the packaged..non salted of course. I hadn't heard of the pumpkin seeds being good, but I had heard of the Vinegar..I have the one with "the mother" in it. Not sure that makes a real difference with what I've read on here, but I use that kind anyway. I bet our chickens would love digging into a pumpkin..have to find a pumpkin..soon.

Random thoughts:
We had the hardest frost today! Eeek! I wish I would have picked all my peppers and tomatoes beforehand....most are still ok, after picking today, but the plants are toast, but some of the veggies got burned a little. Soooo I have been canning tomatoes all day, and freezing peppers...making marinara, pizza sauce, soup, chili, etc etc etc I am SICK of being in my kitchen lol. And all I can think of is bacon ( RED!) . I am freaking hungry arrrrggh! Every time I hear about food it makes me wanna cheat! I hate diets. But it is either that, or get bigger pants. Mine were getting a little snug lol so I guess I better stick with this another week or two. I am getting closer

It won;t be much longer. Then when I get to my goal I am having a cheeseburger with (triple)! bacon, and Pickles and (sigh....) anybody seen that baconator at Wendy's! (Insert drooling smiley here!) My smilies/all my buttons are still are missing from my reply page....I must have changed a setting or something!

You are going to get your baby tonight? Maybe you have it by now..yaay!

Hey, there is a place, that you can go back, to a certain date, and reset your computer there. It's the easiest way to fix what ever you did wrong. I've done it a couple of times lately. Works great. System restore. Everything will come back from the date you decide on...that was on that date.

I have a blue splash Silkie that just started to lay. She was around the 5 month time. Cute little eggs...she just drops them any ol where though. Tried making a special place for her, but no, sometimes she will lay in there, and sometimes not. I had a cochin bantam last year, she laid around the 5th month also.

not sure if roasted would work or not? i just use raw ones

Got my little Un NN! It is Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute. Love the personality, so so sweet. A little pink going on... so I am crossing my fingers really hard for good luck. WE snuggled on the drive back and it fell asleep on my lap. Social little baby <3 Thanks so much Cynthia, and Aravis, and Sphinx for the help getting this baby to me I sure appreciate it!

Lisa, he's getting more meat on him, but I don't think either he or the little white hen will be ready for butchering until after the new year. Which, honestly, is fine by me. I like having them around. But where winter's coming and it's getting cooler, I've been trying to make use of as much food around the yard as I can for the birds. We've got that huge crab apple tree out front, and the chickens and turkeys love to go out there and gorge. Especially the turkeys. Did I mention that turkeys are pigs with feathers? They're fun to watch, though. I've caught several of the neighbors coming out to watch them sometimes, too. And it's funny when people drive past the house and stare at our living lawn ornaments I'm just standing there, waving and smiling like, "Hi, nice people! Thanks for looking. Please don't report me!" Sorry, I can't stop blabbing about the turkeys. Oh, thou stupid forum coding. Please stop jumbling my paragraphs together.

I know what you mean about turkeys! I just love my turkeys. I have two groups that I have to keep separate for breeding purposes so I let one group out to forage, put them back, and then let the other group out. When I know that somebody is coming over I usually make sure they are in their pen, though. My turkeys are very friendly but are such beggars. One hen in particular insists on following me around like a dog and can get underfoot when I'm working. My husband doesn't like it when she walks into the garage and peaks through the dog door. I really don't need a turkey in the house. He's allergic to feathers so prefers that they stay in the approved bird zone.
