Here are the pics of the newest members of my flock. I absolutely love them!!

Oh these are beautiful babies..I am sooo fond of the Silkie now. There was a time, that I thought no way. But all it took was having one. I have two now, well..three..I have this really darling Frizzle from Sundance...and it's partridge, a color that I've been wanting for a long time.

Speaking of being fond of Silkies..I have decided I am not..sorry Lisa...fond of the polish. I have one, maybe two, that I am placing. If the one goes, it will be the buff laced..I have a friend that has said she has wanted the BCW..if you could call it that. These babies are going to be pretty, but I am going to have to decide which to have, and I have fallen in love with the Silkies. And bantam cochins. I am pretty sure that my Birchen is a girl..and I need to decide which to keep..have so many I've been watching, and this is what I've decided. I also have that little blue Favrolle I am working with, and the yellow, but maybe Jill wants it? No problem keeping it for a while Jill if you do.
Mimi...I love that top one..is it a blue splash? Darling!

They are quirky, for sure. But I love 'em If I was closer I wold snap up your buff. I am still hoping mine is a she. I love the silkies too, really I do. But the broody part scares the devil outta me! I think that is why the showgirl makes me so happy, best of both worlds....knock on wood....I read they go broody lots less. We will find out soon! Watch all my Polish go broody.

I love your Cotton and your Blue Splash, and your baby is adorable. No wonder you are in love with them! I am watching to see how yours do, with the broodiness, then will decide next season if I dare try one. They are so cute! Definitely if the Showgirl makes it through the cold here, will want another of those. For another different thing... I am eyeing some Mottled Houdans and Sultans for next season, anybody on here had any? Any input? They are cute! I think McMurray has some, they have a video on the Mottled Houdan chick link. Cutest chicks ever. It would be so much easier to just order chicks than deal with shipped eggs, which brings me to----

Jill---- sorry to hear about the crummy hatch. It is soo disappointing to wait for weeks to see no cheepers. Hope your luck improves! Sphinx does indeed have some gorgeous gorgeous birds. Would be fun to see you get your hands on some of those eggs!

Cynthia, why did you decide you weren't wild about Polish? I don't think I'll have more than the two I have, but I sure like them.

I have never had chicks so stubbornly refuse to figure out this stupid watering system. They now are convinced I have a magic watering finger, and come running as soon as I stick my hand in there, but they just can't seem to get the hang of it. I am getting so frustrated! Diana still hates me, so I finally put a jar lid of water in there so she'd get something to drink. She refuses to drink from the magic water dispensing finger.

Heating your water to keep it from freezing is a great idea.

My chickens in Woods Cross rarely stay inside their coop in the winter. I have wonderful outdoor perches outside the coop that they use year round. The cold does not seem to bother my chickens. However it does not take much wind before they are all in the coop snuggling up.

You left out key information. What kinds of chickens do you have? It largely depends on the breeds of birds that you have.

My cousin down in Springville burned down a coop this spring, fire started by a brooding lamp. Yes it does happen. I will forever harass him about his methods of making BBQ chicken.

I am not sure if that little blue one will be a splash. two of the chicks I had were born really blue. I did not see any white. Will be very interesting to see how they mature

I have a couple of older silkies one of them is broody all the time. I just let her brood if the weather is suitable. If its hot I put her in a cage to break her. It only takes a couple of days of caging her away from the nest to break her. I do love to see her with babies she is so proud and happy when she has babies its really cute I so enjoy watching her. She doesn't know she is a bantum and neither does the other one I have, They refuse to let the other chickens bully them. They stand uo to them. My older red silkie has a beak that grows all the time. I have to trim it about every 3 months. I don't look at their broodyness as an issue just part of them. Right now I have a RIR that is broody I am just letting her brood on nothing. I do pull her off the nest everyday when I gather eggs so she eats and drinks.

Oh dear, I do worry about the heat lamp out in the nursery. :/

I personally use the bowls with the built in heaters to keep the water from freezing in the big coop. Works great. I just put the water containers right close under the lamps in the smaller coops..works great. My husband and I are always checking how hot it gets out there with the lamps. Keep them far enough away from anything wood so they don't feel hot or too warm.
I just put some in the nursery a couple of days ago, with a lamp. Today, I put them in the bigger coop with the NN's and little birchen bantam. They will do well during the day, and I think the 100 W I have in that coop will be good enough for them now, especially since they will be huddling together. This would be the Australorp baby, and leghorn, and a stronger SFH. I still have the two Faverolles and a SFH inside..along with my partridge silkie.

Urg, you guys are chatty (not that there's anything wrong with that!) Our computers picked a fine time to revolt. I'm trying my best to remember what I read, but I'm feeling pretty wiped out today and am not sure why, so my brain is fuzzier than usual. I think my immune system is under siege.

Someone was talking about turkeys. I've never had my turkeys outright attack any of the chickens, but I have seen them chase or challenge the chickens several times if they feel that their space is being invaded. We break these up as soon as we catch them and sometimes carry the turkeys away from the 'offender'. I've noticed that once they start to go after someone, they have a one-track mind. However, I've also seen some of the cockerels (or a pullet, once) pick fights with the turkeys, and the result was that my little tom handed them their backside. I haven't seen anything more aggressive than, "He started it! I'm gonna bite him!", but I do break up anything that I feel is getting too intense. I don't want to take chances. So......I guess it depends on the birds.

Winterizing chickens - I've been feeding mine higher protein lately and giving them more free range time to help fatten them up. Does that count? And I've got a heated doggy dish I will be using for their water bowl.

Someone's chickens are overdue to lay, right? If they free range, give your yard (and maybe the neighbor's yard) a thorough check. One of the nests my girls hid from me was deep inside some grass and a pile of branches that I'd checked half a dozen times, at least. They like anywhere with lots of privacy and good, dry nesting material. Think ninja. If you were a ninja, where would you hide your stuff?

Lots of cute little chicks! Cynthia, ah, you like to torture me, don't you? Lav Orps? Cinnamon Sussex? And me without any room for more chicks. Fie on this life, fie...............
