Utah!

I have one chicken with what I thought was a cough. I have given her Denegard and Tylan. Nothing worked and no other chickens have gotten the cough. Sounds more like a hicup. Can chickens just have a normal sound that is wierd. She is eating drinking peeing and pooping. No weight loss Any one have any ideas?

Is that the Araucana? That's the same sound that I'm hearing from several of my girls. It started with my blue Am, but not everyone has been doing the cough. I had wondered if it was allergies, but I want to give them the Denegard to try and help, anyway.

And I feel for you on rounding up all of the birds. I have to do that every night with a few of the chickens and all three turkeys. And lemme tell ya, Betty does NOT like being handled. Never has. So I have to grab her and just hold on for a minute while she has a tantrum, then stick her in the run. Betty is the wild turkey, btw. Glad your quail and chukars came back.

Edit: Woops, meant to say THANK YOU Cynthia!

When I started feeding my chickens the lay mash, when they first got into it in the mornings, they would do that cough sound. The ones that were eating too fast...just gulping it. They would get a drink and be fine. My black Ameraucana was the worst..and I thought Miss Piggy ate fast!
The lay mash is powdery, they get it stuck in their throat/craw..it sounds like a mix of a cough and a sneeze. They are not sick though. I only hear it once in a while.

My Auracana does that hiccup cough sound all day long. None of the other chickens do it. I can always tell where she is in the yard because of the noise she makes. Not sure what to make of it. Now that it is colder she does it more.

My little white Silkie has an egg stuck in her I think. I think it is called egg binding. She is eating and pooping fine. She is acting the same but hasn't laid an egg for forever and the area under her vent is swollen. I soaked her in warm water yesterday and put her by herself in a darkened room. I just can't decide if she has really fattened up or she is egg bound. None of my chickens are laying right now. Two are broody and my little Cochin stopped too. So I don't know what to think of it. I just don't want to not help her if she needs the help.

Anyone have to deal with this before?

By the way welcome to all the new chicken friends and awesome looking eggs everyone! So jealous right now. I had to go buy eggs again.

Sundance, too funny that your chickens just HAD to see that life is better in Cluckingham palace. I've heard your chicken's weird hiccuping sound. I think you should try to videotape it so they can all hear. It's really odd.

Hattie, sorry that none of your birds are laying. How frustrating. Are they getting supplemental light? I really hope your silkie isn't egg bound. I have no experience on this, and no idea how to tell for sure, or how to fix it.

Don't laugh at me but I don't know how to videotape it for everyone. I think its strange that I have 20 or so chickens and she is the only one that does that. Below is a picture of my self and Wendy at the cat show. I only decorate that much for the Utah show. I can't haul eveything to the other shows

Cynthia, I wonder if that's why some of my girls cough? I have noticed that there is some powder in all three of the feeds I combine for them (scratch, lay pellets, game bird pellets) I never thought about it being a problem. I've only heard some of the birds do the noise, and now that I think about it, I've been to Tooele a couple of times and have yet to hear any of the birds out there start coughing. I wondered this morning if maybe some of them had gotten into some bad food that had given them the cough.

Sundance, Once I can get my laptop back up and running, if you'd like, I will come over and record your Araucana's noise and upload it to Youtube. I have a video setting on my camera. Also, cute Halloween getup!

Hattie, if your Silkie is still eating, I would try mixing in some olive oil with her food. Or, see if you can give her some orally with a dropper. It might help to lube things up for her.

Hattie, I haven't had an eggbound hen, but I've read about it, and it sounds like they act quite ill when they are egg bound, from what I have read, anyway...

Thanks Red I will do that. I just soaked her again and put some lube on her.

She is really swollen and is having a hard time walking. I massaged her while she was in the sink too. Grrrrrr! Why is this happening I don't want another chicken to die!

Daloorashens I know I have been reading about it also. I just don't know what else it could be. She feels like she has a grapefruit inside her. Poor girl.

Sundancen love the picture and all your decoration for the cat show. It matches all your ribbons.

How fun.

I have a question. I have a silkie Rooster that i have had since it was hatched. From the time It hatched to now it has had a head tremor. His head only will Tremor when he turns it a certain way. Is this something i shoul dbe worried about. He is healthy otherwise. I just want to know what could have caused this. He is such a sweet boy.
