Utah!

Aravis, I agree on the raised coop...it just gives you more square footage to use as run space, and the shade is automatic, and it stays dry and not muddy under there in the winter. Mine are under there 90 percent of the time.
Cynthia, my sprouts took a while, I think on day 2 or three I could see the litttle white heads. I am on Day 7 and this is what it looks like, just moving slower...but it is coming! I think I had quite a few not sprout, I need to spread them thinner next time...and the trays sag a little in the middle so the water pools there and the edges are sprouting much thicker than the middle. Will make some amendments to my next batch. Fun to watch it though! It really changed alot from yesterday to today.

Where do you get your wheat

Sundance, for this batch I used oooooold food storage wheat. I also bought a bucket of wheat at Walmart last week to use when the old stuff runs out, it was $12 a bucket. I thought I saw some wheat "feed" at Cal ranch, then I went back, and it looked like it was broken seed, with other stuff....but on the fodder thread there are tons of links for ideas of where to get seeds.

No way on your prices! I just paid 25.96 for a 45 lb. bucket of wheat! Argh!

I could have had double the amount. Thought I would buy some to do to compare to my old stuff. Lisa, thank you for posting and showing pictures. Gives me hope that yours took a while longer, and you now have green! Looking good.

Had a pleasant surprise when I checked for an egg from my blue Splash Silkie, there were two in there! Cotton has started lay. Knew she was close, she was squatting.

Also had a scare for a bit. We had been gone for a while. I had my chickens in the run because I heard, then saw a hawk in the neighbors yard. When we got home, I thought, the hawk surely has had it's breakfast by now. Scott had gone out for a bit, came back, and says, you may want to check your chickens, I just saw a hawk take off with a bird from under our front apple tree. I went out pretty quick needless to say. But, they were all there! Whew. I put them back in. Guess this hawks eats Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unless, it hadn't caught anything this morning. Scott said that the bird was about the size of one of my small pullets. Really small pullets..so, thinking it was one of those Doves we have around here.

I'm excited about my Wheaten A. She is really getting to be more of a dark pink, almost red. Pretty sure she will lay this month. Can't wait to see that egg!

you can get whole wheat at ifa for around $15 for 50lbs, i get it for my scratch mix that i make. they have both red and white and its very high quality stuff :)

Good to know! I will check it out. I will use the WM bucket for our food storage wheat then and get some of this to sprout.

Cynthia, soooo glad that you had no abductions from your flock. That would be the saddest thing to look up and see one of your babies looking down from the clutches of a predator., flying off. I cannot even imagine, especially the little ones that are so sweet.

Congrats on new egg! And neither being broody for now. Hope they keep going for ya!
My White Rock is done being broody, now one of my new Olive Eggers is. It has been two weeks, so hopefully not too much longer. She is getting pretty skinny. Still waiting on my showgirl to lay, and my other polish (34 weeks!)....they are taking their time...and then a bunch of the Marans and the last wheaten.

My last rooster will be for sale/for free!....white polish with black Crest, if anybody is interested. He is pretty sweet. Definitely sure he is a he now.

Aww, how come your girls lay on time and mine don't, Cynthia?

I still have several that are holding out on me, and some of them are older than your Silkies. My RIR and my mom's BSL still lay about every two days, but the BO is on strike, and I haven't seen any eggs from anyone else for a little while. You'd think that with at least ten potential layers out there, someone else would be going by now. And it's the same deal with the girls I have in Tooele. No eggs. What, do I give off an anti-laying aura, or something??

And thank goodness your girls are safe. I had my Leghorn disappear Halloween night. Scared me.

Cynthia, that is so scary. I'm glad he didn't get any of your girls.

I've loved watching you guys and sprouting wheat. I bet I could talk my parents into giving me some of their 70s era wheat to try it with.

see the price for human grade grains is so much higher and since it is for animals you can use feed grade. ifa is the best place for grains i have found. i get wheat, milo, boss, oats and whatever else i decide to get and make my own scratch. i only buy whole grains and i have also planted some around the yard. i love the look of milo and oats and my animals love it too. boss is also fun to grow. ifa has tons of grains and for a good price :)
