Do they have a store close to Idaho? I'd make a small road trip if the price and selection made it worth the trip. Or........maybe a trade next spring.....pullets for grain? LOL

At the moment I'm using wheat and will have some barley in February, but I don't have any right now. I got sidetracked and didn't stock up when it was available locally.

If it was poison, it's possible that he was the only one that got into whatever was bad. It could have been something moldy, or the like. Did he convulse or spasm at all?

Dalooras, yep. Sounds like we've got the same ailment. I've had it suggested that I love my chickens too much, so they think they're humans

Well, not sure how to fix that one. I can't exactly be meaner just to get eggs.

Who else here got one of the Exchequer Leghorns from Cynthia a while back? Was it Kimmie? Is yours laying yet?

All this talk of grains at IFA is persuading me to go and get some and mix my own scratch for the girls. Between the turkeys and the rest of the flock, they're little piggies and I'm always surprised at how fast they mow through a bag of feed. Birdman, do you have a preference between the white or red wheat?

i have no preference, i just look at the protein. if you get whole grain it keeps a lot longer than grain that has been processed. i like making my own scratch because i use what they actually eat. i was buying a scratch mix and it had a ton of corn in it and my girls did not eat the corn. also i can make mine have more protein so it is more than a treat. i mix it up once a year or so. i have one of those paint mixers you put in a power drill so it makes it easy to mix it up. i also add some de to the mix. oh and i keep it in a metal can

hey salt lake county posted this on their facebook page "ATTENTION THIS IS AN URGENT PLEA FOR HELP!!

We have recently stumbled upon a difficult case that our agency is trying to resolve. While working on a feral colony for the TNR program we nor did the homeowner actually realize how many cats he was caring for.

We are now facing a critical decision! We have to re-locate roughly 40-60 cats!!! Due to the conditions of the home we cannot release them back to the property and currently are trying to make a temporary home here at the shelter. We do not want to euthanize the cats so we are desperately trying to seek out new locations for the cats to live. Unfortunately they are all feral and not handle able.

We do have to face a deadline however. If we cannot find a new home for all of them by Monday Nov. 19th we will have to euthanize the remaining cats!!!!

All of them are sterilized, ear-tipped, and vaccinated.

If you have a rescue partner, friend, family member, associate, ANYONE who wants a barn cat, can add to their existing colony, or help us in any way please contact me immediately!!

We found a new Silkie rooster today. I think he is a blue splash. He is still young. You can seethe pin feathers comeing out of his head. She hatched him in July.

I'm getting tempted to try this fodder thing. Our birds have already cleaned up every berry or edible plant they can find, with the exception of the lawn. I keep moving some boards around on the ground out back so that they can eat the grass sprouts that come up underneath them. I'll bet they'd like a little sprouted wheat.

So, I don't think I have a pecking order in my flock. It's more like a pecking loop. My RIR is the boss, pecking everyone from the black Am cockerel on down. The BO and BSL are next in line to dole out punishment for insubordination. The BO is pecked by the black Am cockerel. The cockerel, in turn, is hen pecked by several of the other pullets, including the blue AM, who's become a saucy, bossy girl. These girls are pecked by each other, and rank above most of the youngest pullets, save for the Leghorn. When someone picked on the Leghorn's buddies, she dishes it out to the offenders. The youngest girls also square off with the BR's. The turkeys are usually mild and sit off to the side of all this, but everyone will peck them. However, beware a turkey's wrath, for the white ones will sometimes get ticked and chase one of the chickens around, no matter their rank. And the wild turkey is the only one who can boss around the RIR, who's at the top of the whole thing. Everyone somehow ranks above someone else. If I were to try and make a chart of this, I'm pretty sure it would be one big snarl.

thx for letting me see your chickens again and for the berries. my rooster is at the top of the pecking order.... actually he's not picked on or picks on anybody. also its wierd because he is one of the most docile breeds!!! bo's.... although the top hen is a bo, which is another surprise...
