Birdguy, the same thing happened to me earlier this year. I spent an entire day building that coop and run for my mom, then got put down by a bad flu bug for an entire week. It must be stressful stuff.

Birdman, I'm getting all excited to check out Cal Ranch now! Yes, turkeys can be pretty loud, but to be fair, I think my RIR is just about as loud as they are. Peafowl and guinea fowl are worse. You can hear them up to half a mile away

I would love some guinea fowl, if I ever got a large chunk of property. Some breeds of turkey may be quieter than others, too. The Broad-breasted Whites that I have are loudmouths. The wild turkey, on the other hand, isn't nearly as obnoxious when she's being vocal. I know that pawtraitart and Thebirdguy keep some different breeds of turkey than I do. Would either of you like to chime in on this?

Lisa, I know that Sasha has been working a lot, and Trex is sick. I saw them for a brief moment when I dropped off Sasha' bator. That's how I know, hehe.

Awww another sick one.....that is awful during the holidays. Hopefully it will clear out before turkey day.

DId I see that there might be a sale at Cal Ranch of Black Friday? I hope so. I love that store. They need to sell feed at half off as a doorbuster, right?!

Midget white turkeys can be loud during the breeding season when the males "gobble gobble gobble" as they strut around. My husband likes calling out to them because they will reply in unison every time. Cracks him up. Both male and female can get loud if their food dish is empty, if their food dish has a new food in it...generally if anything NEW is within their sight including strangers. Strangers are scary! Folks who come visit ask me how I can stand listening to all the noise.....I tell them that it's THEIR fault that the turkeys are being loud.

Hehehe, sounds kind of like the BBW, then. I like saying "Tew tew tew" or "Pip pip?" to mine because they respond so much. They make their loud, worried noises if someone or something unfamiliar is in sight, too. And they team up and complain if they think I'm not giving them enough attention

did anyone see the ad on ksl for the Appenzeller-Spitzhauben Pullets?

WOW!!! I think im going to call the guy and see if he is a breeder and might have some eggs come this spring. They are so cool looking.

Madchicken, I wonder if that's the same guy that was showing three of them at the SL county fair this year? Someone had two Appenzeller pullets and either a cockerel or a rooster. They're supposed to be really flighty birds, but these ones didn't seem to mind too much about having a lot of people around them. They are such pretty birds. They kind of make me think of mini white peafowl. That would be cool if you get some next year. I'd be interested to see what you think of them

I done a little reading and found that they are flighty and like to roost in trees, but if i clip their wings then they cant really fly just run really fast. I have a couple hens that have cliped wings now and they dont seem to mind. As long as i only clip six feathers and leave four they seem to be able to fly up to the roost at 36" but have given upon on looking for greener pastures.

Red, I have to admit I love talking to turkeys. It gives me the giggles that they always talk back. When I took my girl scout troop to camp this fall, there were some wild turkeys in the hills, we could hear them gobbling. So I'd gobble really loud at them, and they'd all respond back. My girl scouts thought it was hilarious.


I need more roosting spots for my chickens. I'd love to see how you guys have your roosts done so I can get some ideas. How high up are they? I suspect I have a lot of wasted space, but I'm feeling uninspired.

Last, remember how Sundance was talking about how her Aracauna makes a weird hiccuping sound? I got it on video. Every time I've seen her, she's doing this, and about this frequently, and it's been going on for months. Anyone have any ideas?

Is she a greedy eater? Poultry will do that when they over-stuff their crops.
