Vacation?

do they get locked up in the coop at night? I found a dog sitter that can come in, walk my dog and lock up my chickens for the night, and then open the coop the next morning, has been wonderful. that way I can go on vacation in peace

ah, good, I thought mine was fool proof until I saw a rat eating out of my food hanger, so now I lock them up, don't need a rat eating my chicks or chewing on the tail feathers, ewww, makes my skin crawl.

My small coop/run is pretty predator proof also. I’ve had a rat try to make its home there but once I scared it off it never came back. It didn’t bother the chickens..just ate their food.

I leave the coop open at night.

If you have a little time before the trip, do a trial run and put out what you think will be enough food and water for the vacation duration, and then check after the trial run to see how close your calculations were and adjust if needed.

So let's say you figure you need 2 lbs of food and 1 gallon water. When you go on the actual trip I would put down 3 lbs of food and 1 1/2 gallons if possible, because it's better to have an emergency backup supply than to assume everything will go perfectly while you're gone.

Well my run is going to be heavy duty so will there be a need to lock them up

Will it be 1/2" hardware cloth, with an apron all around the coop and run? What will the run be covered with?

If I leave for vacation ( maybe 2 nights) and only have 3 chickens how big of a feeder and watered would I need if i wouldn’t want them to be refilled

What kind of feeder and waterer do you have/want, will the water stay clean?
If you don't have feeders or waterers, I recommend a horizontal nipple waterer for clean water 24/7. You can buy the nipples on Amazon and make your own.
I like the DIY no waste feeders.

I leave my chickens for a week at a time with these feeders and waterers. I have food and water in the coop as well. My coop is open to the run 24/7
