Being new to the chicken world and still building my coop. I was thinking what do I do when I go on vacation?

Do I need to install an automatic door so chickens can get into coverd yard for weekend trips?

Do I need to find someone to look after chickens if I go on longer trip?

Just thinking of things prior to getting my flock.

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Automation will only get you so far. What if the power goes out, or their waterer runs dry? Having someone stop by daily to check the birds is a lot of peace of mind.

X3 1muttsfan's advice. If you are going away for a few days the hens will lay eggs that needs collecting, they may run out of water or knock the waterer over, ditto with food... Rather let someone check on them daily.

Yes! You will need a care taker IMO. Also the automated doors are great but we have some that tend to straggle out side later than the others, I am afraid someone will get locked out (I have even locked them out my self........
