Welcome to BYC!Should I vaccinate my chicks?
Welcome to BYC!
Are you purchasing from a hatchery or hatching them yourself?
If you are getting them from a hatchery you can have them vaccinated against Marek's. Otherwise, to purchase the vaccine and vaccinate your chicks yourself it would be VERY expensive.
All birds hatched here are completely natural. The two batches I purchased from a hatchery are vaccinated against Marek's.
We’re getting them from a local farm store, but they said they are not vaccinated.Welcome to BYC!

You didn't specify what you want them vaccinated against. I assume Mareks, but there's other vaccines as well.
Note that most chicken vaccines that I'm aware of come in large batches only (1000 doses) and must be used immediately when opened, you cannot save them for later use, hence why they're considered costly for home use
Fairly new, I just didn’t know if people chose to vaccinate them, or chose to not vaccinate them. What were the pros and cons of both optionsYou didn't specify what you want them vaccinated against. I assume Mareks, but there's other vaccines as well.

Then I would not try to vaccinate the chicks yourself. We’re getting them from a local farm store, but they said they are not vaccinated.
Thanks so much!I think most people don't opt for vaccinations, at least in the US (you don't have location listed, in some countries they may have different regulations). My flock is all vaccinated for Mareks, but only because my local feed stores order vaccinated chicks, so it's not an option.
Pros: Mareks vaccine can help prevent the formation of tumors if the birds catch Mareks.
Cons: Cost + vaccines aren't very accessible for home use. Mareks vaccine can hide the fact that the flock is positive for it, which is a concern for some people.
Thanks a lot! Then I would not try to vaccinate the chicks yourself.
Unvaccinated chicks usually do just fine.
